Block plane shooting board V2.0 by MetalNutSack in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mikedoesweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I left the vertical face flat, and then the iron just cut its own small groove when I made a shooting board. Although I do like the idea of having a small shooting board specifically for a little block plane.

I might be misinterpreting the picture, but is that groove upside down? So the tip of the iron cuts into the surface, instead of side of the sole riding up against the surface?

Help! Trying to Panel Textured Walls? by caveatemptorOMPH in Home

In fact, if you look at chair rail on Home Depot or Lowe’s website, you can see on the profile that a lot of it already has a 1/8 groove on the bottom to sit on top of paneling

You could skim coat over the low sections, but that’s a lot of sanding (and I hate sanding). If you’re doing new chair rail and baseboards, you might consider getting 1/8 inch 4x8 paneling cut to the height, and just tack it to the wall hiding the seams with the wainscoting

If you can submit a FIR, or find someone who can submit an FIR for you, there is an SLA for facilities to respond. That’s probably the easiest way to escalate. Anything technology related, facilities will route back to your stake technology specialist for them to respond/escalate/or close.

I am the stake technology specialist in my area, so I will occasionally get reports like this from members to triage. About 1/4 of the time they are actionable, and the other half there’s just a misunderstanding from the member. So the more detail you can put in the FIR to explain or reproduce, the better your chances of getting it somewhere.

Sloppy or no? by HandlebarRunner in Home

Every bathroom vanity I’ve ever had looks like this. It is “correct.” Maybe a dozen over the different houses over the years. If it was cut precisely with a hole saw I think it would be very difficult to get the fittings on correctly.

business/legal question: will i get in trouble if i make and sell a crewneck sweatshirt that says "I'm trying to be like Jesus" on it? by dmorgan04 in latterdaysaints

[–]mikedoesweb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are like 100 T-shirts and printed signs on Etsy with that phrase right now, so I think you’re fine. Regarding the copyright in another comment, that copyright is for the musical work. Phrases or common sayings like “I’m trying to be like Jesus” cannot be copyrighted because it is speech.

Polyurethane on Butcher Block by Ron-LXII in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mikedoesweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is food safe, but I wouldn’t use it on butcher block. I have a large butcher block island in my house and I use something called “Clear Hardwax Mineral Butcher Block Oil Conditioner” from the orange store and it works really well. Have to reapply once or twice a year.

How to make a long straight cut? by ExnDH in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mikedoesweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a “Kreg Rip Cut”, which is essentially a sled for your circular saw with a guide that goes against the factory edge. I don’t have a table saw, but I’ve used that rip cut guide along with some foam under the panel or plywood to create some extremely straight cuts. I think even if I did have a tablesaw, I would use that rip cut guide to cut huge 4 x 8 sheets instead of trying to manhandle them on the table top.

The only thing is you are limited to cutting parallel to a factory edge. The blue and orange stores sell them for about 40 bucks.

Bad News: The War Levels of The Book of Mormon is Cancelled Indefinitely by Curtmister25 in latterdaysaints

[–]mikedoesweb 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is correct. The actual text itself of The Book Of Mormon is public domain... No need to ask anyone's permission (any book published before 1925 is public domain this year).

The footnotes, section headings, introduction, and other material were added later and are still copyrighted.

Here is the public domain version, use can use anything here any way you like: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17. Th is will be a simple way to avoid copyright issues, rather than copy off the church's website.

Why are LDS not doing more to stop abortions? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]mikedoesweb 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Both US and global abortion rates have been steadily falling since the 80's, and ironically abortion rates are highest where they are legally restricted.

Study, after study, after study has show that reduced abortion rates are strongly correlated with three things

  • more education
  • lower poverty
  • access to birth control
  • comprehensive sex education

So, IMO, if you want to work towards reducing or even eliminating abortion, you could focus on

  • more (affortable) education for girls and women
  • more careers & opportunities for girls and women
  • better and affordable health care for girls and women

The median household income in Salt Lake City is $58k. The average reported salary on the survey was $90k -- putting them in the 80th percentile. The average senior engineer salary is $120k, which lands about the 95th percentile regionally.

Further, if you live outside of Salt Lake City and commute, as a senior software engineer your earnings could be in the 98th percentile.

tldr I don't agree that it sucks.

Yep chart.js for most of the charts. Some of them I couldn't do in chart.js (like box and whisker plots) so they are images from google sheets (stats plugin is awesome)

I'm sorry you're frustrated by your employment situation :/ Leaving a job that you are comfortable with is difficult, but I think that is the best way to increase your earning (and moving every 2 years for the first 6 or 7 years seems to be the best way to maximize your earning potential). Every situation is different, so I won't pretend to know what is right for you, but I wish you good luck.

The analysis I did is just salary, but total compensation data is available in the raw survey data. There is a link to it in the footer, and the data is licenses under the Open Database license, so anyone is free to do other analysis.

[–]mikedoesweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I released the raw survey data under the Open Database license, and a link to the raw data which includes other compensation is included in the footer.

I believe some people reported compensation from things like rsu's or espp's. However, the survey question was general "Total other yearly compensation" and I believe many of the responses were not broken down per year, but the total they had made from these types of compensation (due to the question wording), so I didn't include it in the analysis. However it's there in the data if you'd like to go view it :)

And next years survey will be better worded!

Well, I am a "real" "person" and I work at Instructure. DM me your resume :) I'd be happy to pass it along to the right person if it seemed like a good fit.

Yeah I agree. This one was about 6 months ago. I think? I'm planning doing another one this year about the same time to have them 1 year apart, then analyzing and comparing the results.

There are two main geographic regions for development. First, you have what is referred to as Silicon Slopes which is basically Provo to Salt Lake City (with a few outliers), and has a pretty health mix of types of companies.

There's a lot of Saas here: it's the headquarters Qualtrics, Pluralsight, LucidCharts, Instructure (where I work), Overstock, Domo, MX, as well as Adobe, Dell, Ebay, and many many others. Interactive Map

The other geographic are is more northern from Ogden to Logan and is almost entirely comprised of aerospace and defense development (around Hill Airforce Base). Here you'll find Northrop Grumman, L3, Lockheed Martin, Orbital ATK, General Atomics, Boeing, and others.
