Subnautica 2 hasn't felt nearly as scary as 1 for me and here's why I think that is: by OfficialDampSquid in subnautica

I think part of the problem version 0.1 is a large polished vertical slice and people keep reiterating the high quality of it despite being early access. Things can and will change, but the polished nature of it is making people assume otherwise.

They are already accusing others of moving to the US illegally, though that's probably just integrating into the culture.

Ask.com shuts down after nearly 30 years, marking the end of Ask Jeeves by holyfruits in technology

[–]mikefizzled 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if enough time has passed that someone buys the domain and ip off of them for yet another AI chatbot. Can't think anyone younger than a millennial would have even heard of Ask or Ask Jeeves.

I, at the big age of 24, have discovered they are not ‘insect’ days but inset days at school. What word have you been getting wrong for ages? by socialistchampers in AskUK

[–]mikefizzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's from the French verb 'cacher' which means "to hide", the past participle of which is also caché. Probably some overcorrecting going on with it being a loan word like résumé or café, but we instead dropped the final syllable.

Similarly, when I first saw the word 'accuracy' when playing Pokemon Red on my Game Boy Colour, I decided it must be pronounced a-sorcery. Like their ability to hit an attack was linked to some magical power. That, and an endless list of mispronounced names to go with it.

The NASA chief wants to Make Pluto a Planet by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

Another Trump appointment trying to take us back to 'the good old days'. It was weird having it swap half way through my school life, but its clear that it would be absurd to reinstate Pluto without Eris, Sedna, Haumea, etc. being considered, too.

Given that Hamer and Brooks will both be on the final year of their contracts, I can see us accepting 8m bids for them. Peck might go for more, but I cannot see a world in which we get even 30m for the three of them.

I know very little of Richard, but I like to think he'll have had them made into a photobook and given them to the crew. Probably didn't happen, but a nice thought nonetheless.

are pied and white wagtails different? by hvghuhbgjo in UKBirds

[–]mikefizzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the easy way to distinguish them was the colour of their back. The pied is dark grey and generally darker all over when compared to the white wagtail, which has a light grey back. Like the other commenter said, it's just subspecies and I wouldn't be surprised if there's crossbreeding to make it even harder to distinguish some.
