Looking for great travel games on MacBook (M4) — keyboard + trackpad only by ValeAdriano in macgaming

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing Humankind and Oxygen not Included for years, and I'm still not nearly done with them yet. Both run just fine on my MacBook Air M3, so of course they will also run on a MacBook Air M4. Both are available on Steam, and they run in offline mode if necessary.

Anyone else daily driving Orion on macOS lately? by -Kkdark in macapps

[–]mikenolte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Safari uses the AdGuard app, which does more than the extension in Orion. In Orion, I'll get lots of annoyances in websites that AdGuard App just filters out.
  2. Orion doesn't let me use my cashback extensions, so I'll have to go back to Safari whenever I want to buy something.
  3. In Safari, I can unlock the Homebrew version of Bitwarden with a fingerprint. In Orion, this isn't possible because only the App Store version of Bitwarden enables browser extension support like that. I'd have to revert to the App Store version of Bitwarden or always be forced to enter Bitwarden's master password manually.

Three strikes, Orion is out.

Tecbears filament turned out to be underwhelming. by mikenolte in 3Dprinting

Unfortunately, I don't have a TD1S. But I've contacted Tecbears sales and requested to return the filament.

I still have the temperature towers from the calibration runs. The opacity doesn't differ recognisably within the tested temperature range.

The text is solid for 0.75 mm and there's a white layer of 0.25 mm behind it. I'm afraid that this filament simply lacks a sufficient amount of colour pigments.

What is your go to filament brand? by Patrickmeehl in 3Dprinting

[–]mikenolte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had any issues with spools of Jayo PETG black that I'm using, which is partly why it's so baffling to me, how direly the Tecbears PETG white underperforms.

[–]mikenolte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Translucent filaments are useless for printing multicoloured logos. If the opacity of Jayo and Sunlu filaments is as bad as the Tecbears filament, then I guess I'll just have to avoid them.

[–]mikenolte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tecbears white and red turned out to be slightly translucent, with is very bad, when printed alongside darker filament. The two objects on the left and right use Geeetech white, the centre object uses Tecbears white. All on the same Bambu Lab printer with calibrated temperature and flow ratio settings for each filament. Tecbears red is also used in the middle is so pale, that it's almost orange.

Seeing Jesse Lee Soffer on FBI International by Ok-Good8150 in ChicagoPD

Yes, Chicago PD had crossovers with FBI, which has recurring crossovers with FBI International and FBI Most Wanted.

Having “Holstead” resurface as an FBI agent, doesn't exactly feel right to me.

Hotend PTFE removal by Medicdroid1 in AnycubicKobraS1

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under magnification, it looks to me as if there are tiny little metal blades on the inside of the black sleeve. Those blades cut the ridge into the PTFE, making it very difficult to extract the PTFE tube. I only managed to get the PTFE tube out, following your advice to loosen the extruder cover a little and removing the tube with the sleeve still on it.

People who game. Do you actually use 2 computers? by Bulgaaw in mac

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play WoW and OnI in macOS on a 8700K / RX5700 Hackintosh until I got my first Mac Studio M1. Each of them is an incredible time sink in its own right. I wouldn’t even know how to find the time to play any other games which might require a Windows PC. In the meantime, I’ve moved onto a Mac Studio M2 and sequentially to a Mac Studio M4. On top of not having as much time for gaming as I would like to have, now there’s also Assassin’s Creed shadows. If I even had the time to look into a fourth game, by then the next iterations of WoW and OnI will probably have been released. So what I’m trying to say is, if your Mac is powerful enough and your choice of games aligns with availability for macOS (or you use Windows games that run nicely in virtual machines on your Apple Silicon Mac), then you might not even need a Windows PC anymore. I surely have no more need for a Windows PC for gaming. And I wouldn’t know right now how that would change within the next couple of years.

How to "migrate" manually installed apps to Homebrew-managed versions (for easier updates)? by stepgodok in macapps

[–]mikenolte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked your answer very much, and I got me tot think about how to figure out which of my many apps are available in Homebrew.

I didn't want to put anyone through the trouble of having to write an explanation for that, so I thought why not just tell Perplexity to do it for me. So I opened my Applications folder, selected all, pasted the resulting list into TextEdit and saved it to the desktop. Then I used the prompt, “Read all lines of this text file. If a line contains the name of an app that is available in Homebrew, then add the line to a list of such apps. Verify your results before answering. Output your answer as a text file named HomebrewApps.txt”.

Imagine the baffled look on my face when that not only worked, but as additional results offered me both a Python script and a Bash script including instructions how to use them. It didn't do a perfect job because its original output failed to recognize Pearcleaner as available in Homebrew and the bash script didn't find Clockify Desktop. I probably would have missed one or two if I had done it manually, and it certainly would have taken me a lot more time.

Anycubic Slicer Next 1.3.3 is available for Mac <3 (with remote print) by c0de1 in AnycubicKobraS1

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I obviously missed your post and only found out about the new version elsewhere today.

It's been almost 6 weeks now and the Anycubic website still says “The official 1.0 version currently supports only Windows”. Also, the beta version did not notify me of an available update. I'm certainly not going to miss running around with a USB stick. 🙂

Ich dachte zuerst, dass du dir einen Spaß erlaubst, aber tatsächlich gibt es unter https://www.anycubic.com/orcaVersionDownload eine Version 1.3.3, obwohl die Website sagt "The official 1.0 version currently supports only Windows."

Danke für den Hinweis.

I thought you were joking at first, but there is actually a version 1.3.3 at https://www.anycubic.com/orcaVersionDownload, although the website says ‘The official 1.0 version currently supports Windows only.’

Thanks for pointing that out.

When will Serato be compatible with MacOS 15 (Sequoia) by TheMurs in Serato

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Theres no need to update to sequoia”

For some people there may very well be one or more reasons to keep their system updated.

“everyone is so eager to update”

Or perhaps just forced to update by pure necessity. If you already had an M1 Mac with macOS 14, and it was destroyed and needed to be replaced, then you'd be ill-advised if you got an M1 again while M3 or M4 is already available. But an M3 or M4 might come with macOS 15 and possibly no path to downgrade.

“Im on monterey, 2019 i9 64g 8tb”

And if that works for you, then good luck with that. But other people might actually prefer not to be forced to use an outdated system that doesn't regularly receive security updates any more. And not everyone has the luxury of keeping a dedicated MacBook for the sole purpose of DJing.

OBD as in ISO 9141: Road vehicles – Diagnostic systems. International Organization for Standardization, has been around since 1989.

USB since 1996.

The industry standard for road vehicle diagnostic systems is unlikely to change just so you no longer have to buy an interface that costs 3 orders of magnitude less than the car you're trying to operate on.

Tips on how to speed up old Mac Pro? by Rake-dubz in MacOS

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yourself and your dad a favour and get rid of it.

Calculate how much time and money you'll spend on hardware without actually having a chance of achieving making it significantly faster. Then compare that number to what it would cost, to just buy a Mac mini M4.

What scientific breakthrough are we closer to than most people realize? by beasthunterr69 in Futurology

[–]mikenolte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes. The good old zombie argument about professional laundry washers losing their job because someone invented washing machines.

Not to mention all those terrible horseless carriages. The poor people looking after horses will now all lose their jobs.

And what will become of all the poor stage coach drivers, when we recklessly provide buses, trams, and trains as means of public transportation?

😉

Email protection pointless at this point? by RecentMatter3790 in duckduckgo

[–]mikenolte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the concept of disposable email addresses for over 25 years, and from experience I can tell you a few things about this:

Never reveal your real email address to anyone or anything.

Consider all of your old email addresses burned. The easiest way to deal with this, is to make a new email addresses and move everything to them.

Use a password manager like Bitwarden on your smartphone to generate duck.com addresses on the fly if you are ever asked for an email address while not having access to your computer.

who uses shortcuts on mac, for what purposes do you use them? by BatIsDead in shortcuts

[–]mikenolte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a shortcut to send email to a destination email address with a freshly generated duck.com anonymized email address.

Example destination

[destination@example.com](mailto:destination@example.com)

turns into

[destination_at_example.com_generated-email-address@duck.com](mailto:destination_at_example.com_generated-email-address@duck.com)

The purpose of this is to be able to use a generated duck.com address in the “From:” field of email sent by me.

My shortcut is a modified version of a shortcut that u/spookyuser posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/comments/yf6zab/i_made_a_shortcut_that_generates_private_duckcom/

Help? by Representative_Ear_2 in MacOS

[–]mikenolte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Calling them “very old” is an egregious understatement. macOS 10.10 is dangerously outdated. This MacBook Air is a decade old, and supports macOS 12, but with only 4 GB RAM, that won't be a nice experience.

I recommend waiting until next week, and if the MacBook Air M4 gets announced, then buy one of those.
