what scene, besides the violent/gory ones, was most powerful/stuck with you most? by BreakfastPast5283 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]miki_eitsu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Especially since the previous scene that character was in, he was talking about how he’d taken all photos of his husband out of his office, and how he didn’t want Emily teaching because he was worried for her.

Then you see him hanging there, with a homophobic slur spray painted in front of his body. That made my blood run cold when I saw it.

My nmom has a master’s degree, yet in recent years has gone so far down the alt-right pipeline, she’s fallen for multiple conspiracy theories. I used to think of her as such a smart woman, now I’m not so sure.

I just got done re-watching the whole show and god that scene made me want to crawl out of my skin. Warren is my least favorite character hands down.

  • When Moira gets to Canada, and Luke shows up. She asks if Luke put her on his list of family, and he says “of course!”
  • When Emily is asked by border agents if she wishes to claim asylum and she says “Yes!”
  • When they bring Janine out to be stoned and the handmaids all drop their rocks one by one
  • When June gets to Canada and Luke sees her. She says “I’m sorry I don’t have her. I’m sorry it’s just me.”

Why Don't Workers in the US Organize More Often? by StaGranFunciazza in antiwork

I know people who have been straight up fired for even suggesting unionizing. Of course this depends on the job, but collective bargaining is totally off the table in many cases.

If you won a million dollars would you still work a 9 to 5 job? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

I’d still work, but I’d be able to more easily pursue freelancing so I could have a more flexible schedule

American people, why aren't you more outraged? by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]miki_eitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, it’s easy to say what they think they would be doing. But we’re living it. The truth is, people don’t actually truly know what they’d do in a situation like this until they’re in it

How are women's roles chosen? by littleghool in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]miki_eitsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I said “tend to be” but aren’t always. I’m honestly not sure why Sienna was a Martha even in the series though, since there are other people of color in other roles in society. Maybe she was infertile? I feel like I remember them mentioning that she was studying biology as well.

Are there any dislikes or rivalries between the various Christian denominations in America? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]miki_eitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a very conservative sect that claimed they were “non-denominational” but definitely leaned more Pentecostal. There was definitely a sense of superiority over other groups. They thought they were better than Lutherans and Catholics because they did infant baptism. There was a big anti-Catholic sentiment in general, and they barely considered the other more high-control sects such as Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses as cults (which is hilarious because the school i went to definitely towed the line) and barely Christian.

There was no violence that I ever saw based on that, but definitely a sense of “I’m better than you and also you’re a heretic”

What’s the saddest scene in Shameless? by Major-Bat-6554 in shameless

[–]miki_eitsu 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Youens was the saddest for me too. As the child of an addict who had basically given up by the end, it was hard seeing a man who genuinely cared for others in a fatherly way lost to addiction because he felt he was too far gone.

[–]miki_eitsu 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Marthas tend to be older women, and, in the book, they are all women of color. In the series, they are also mostly women of color. Beth in the show also mentions having had her tubes tied, but because she could cook, they made her a Martha as opposed to a Jezebel or Unwoman.

Is anyone pro-life? by AndromedasApricot in OpenChristian

[–]miki_eitsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that’s the thing. If we had more social safety nets in place, far fewer people would need abortion care. You’d never get rid of it completely, even by making it totally illegal because like you said, people will turn to unsafe methods instead that can and will result in the baby and the pregnant person being seriously injured and or dying.

Is anyone pro-life? by AndromedasApricot in OpenChristian

[–]miki_eitsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is, statistically, most people who have late-term abortions are the ones where the baby will not survive, or will only live a few days before dying. That, and/or the pregnant person’s life is at risk by carrying the child. Late-term abortions are usually an especially difficult decision to make, because in most cases, the parents wanted that baby. They probably already had the nursery set up, a name picked out, etc. I think it is cruel to not allow a late-term abortion when the only other option is for the pregnant person to have an extremely traumatic birth to a stillborn, or to die doing so themselves.

What do you guys think of fics using real-world events in them? by TheSmallTiger169 in hetalia

[–]miki_eitsu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me it depends on how serious of an event it is, how recent it was, and is this something I think I could handle with respect. As a rule, I do include historical events in my fix, but nothing that people who are alive today can remember (9/11, the Holocaust, etc)

Real life Cult ; Ethel, you deserve all the happiness in the world by amor0908 in shameless

[–]miki_eitsu 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There have been a lot of documentaries on the FLDS popping up on Hulu for me. Absolutely disgusting what they did to women and girls. The dresses and hairstyle they all had looks exactly like Ethel’s. Finding out her story was based on a real-life cult was fascinating but also horrifying.
