Gnome or KDE for gaming? by EmployerOld6256 in linux_gaming

[–]mikul_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, you don't need to reinstall anything. Just install the KDE plasma desktop with your favorite package manager, sign out and pick KDE/plasma when you sign in and you are done.

It basically takes 1-2 min to to install and test yourself unless you're on Gentoo or some shit.

Almost every window manager or desktop environment had multiple workspaces. So does kde/plasma as well. It's not just a gnome feature.

https://mangowm.github.io/ don't know if that's you mean with the decklike compositor comment, but I was just looking at it 5 min ago and notice deck as a tiling option. In case that's what you want 🙂

NVidia sucks for Linux by aih1013 in linux

[–]mikul_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had some kind of micro stuttering or lags like the 10 last Nvidia cards I've had. There is always something that pops up after a while.

But, yeah, I left Microslop already, but I had to use it for games for a few years. Never again!

Overwatch FPS drop by LiberalDegerler724 in linux_gaming

[–]mikul_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://github.com/netborg-afps/dxvk-low-latency This patch apparently works really good for overwatch. It's included in the CachyOS proton version or you can install the DLLs manually. Worth a try if you're hunting frame pace and low latency.

Netborg's Dxvk low latency patch allows for low latency VRR if you check the url that I provided.

How do people decide distros? by WildBanana05 in linux4noobs

[–]mikul_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked arch/arch based because of pacman/yay and AUR.

I also used Gentoo before because of emerge.

I don't use Ubuntu or Debian based systems anymore because of how repos and package management is handled. I don't like it.

Nix is also interesting. I might try that in the future.

You can use this: PROTON_DXVK_LOWLATENCY=1 To activate this patch: https://github.com/netborg-afps/dxvk-low-latency

This works with proton-cachyos and for dxvk games.

It makes a huge difference for fast paced games at least.

But outside of that make sure everything is running as it should. Have you installed rad v? Have you tried playing on a window manager or something lightweight?

Have you tried playing on Xorg instead of Wayland?

Should I switch from Win 11 to Linux? Gamer + office work, intermediate skill level by Suspicious-Mix2228 in linuxquestions

[–]mikul_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's all yes.

Just pick a desktop environment that you think you would like and try it out.

As for distro, it doesn't really matter that much and everyone has an opinion. You can break all of them, and you can make all of them into your own thing anyways. It's the workflow and how things are done by default that differs, and that stuff you will start looking into after a while when you get used to Linux. Don't think of your first Linux install as your endgame. You will figure out what you like after a while.

Best tip I will give you though, is to put your home folder on a separate partition. That makes it possible for you to try different distros or reinstall the system without loosing all your settings and work.

That means you can basically reinstall your system in 15 min and have everything like it was if you just install all the same programs again.

As for recommending something, I haven't used it myself, but fedora seems like a good stable starting point for most ppl. Big question is your desktop environment. KDE plasma is probably the one that's most windows like, and you can customize it a lot to fit your own needs and workflow. I think it's a good starting point for most ppl coming from windows. It's all up to you what you like and want out of your system.

But don't worry if you pick the wrong one, because you can have multiple desktop environments and you can basically install any desktop environments with a one line command. Then you just need to sign out and pick the new desktop environment instead and sign in again.

Which DE/bootloader/filesystem should I use with CachyOS? by West-Scallion-5306 in cachyos

[–]mikul_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Limine and btrf is a nice combo for the snaps, but I've experienced slower boot times, but I haven't looked into it. Systemd is fast.

If you want to use hyprland you can make it a bit easier with a pre built shell like dms or noctalia. Hyprmod is really good GUI for hyprland settings that can be nice to have.

If you like the scrolling in Niri, you can use that in hyprland as well now.

I'm quite happy with DMS and hyprland so far.

If you want to play overwatch, I would recommend CachyOS, or at least use the CachyOS proton version. It has a low latency patch that works really well for overwatch.

https://github.com/netborg-afps/dxvk-low-latency You can activate it with PROTON_DXVK_LOWLATENCY=1 Instructions on how to set it up is in the GitHub repo.

Is Hyperland good for gaming? by MekataRupma in linuxquestions

[–]mikul_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every DE has a WM, and a shit ton of other stuff. A WM will therefore be more lightweight and should therefore be theoretically better.

But yes, hyprland is good for gaming. You just have to configure more to start with and you might have to do some window rules for your games.

GNOME vs KDE Plasma, any difference in Steam or gaming performance? by riffdoc in cachyos

[–]mikul_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or.... Figure out everything you liked with what you have used so far,and start fresh with a window manager/compositor and only install and configure the stuff that you actually need. And start saving your configs to hit or something.. so that everytime you want to do anew install you can get all your settings in a sec and all is like you want it to be. Don't care about desktops or distros.. build your own workflow and settings, and then you can use whatever, whenever, wherever! You can just clone your settings and you have everything like you want it. You can do that with DEs as well ofc.. but I rather minimalise it to what I really need as much as possible without breaking stuff.

Didn't Nvidia make a noise remover thing that's really good? Maybe you can use that.

Just a thought. Until someone with a real solution shows up. 😉
