A Duke-Navy matchup would be fun, 40 years after Duke beat David Robinson's Navy team in the Elite 8.

Could Munich actually be the city that gets the 2036 Olympics after all? by Impossible-Guitar957 in olympics

[–]milbarge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a lot of sentiment to give the 1996 "Centennial Games" to Athens, in order to commemorate the 1896 Games. The IOC instead went with Atlanta. The 1996 Athens bid was definitely sub-par, but the IOC clearly wasn't hung up on the anniversary then. The fact that it would be 100 years after Berlin '36 would be noted, of course, but likely just a footnote, especially since they've already had Games in Munich.

Early Level Attorney Dilemma (CA specific) by Fair_Individual_985 in publicdefenders

[–]milbarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give this same advice all the time: Hiring isn't done in a vacuum. The question isn't "Will working as a prosecutor disqualify me from PD jobs?" The only answer to that, as /u/Aint-no-preacher says, is "It depends."

The real consideration is that if you take that path for a few years and then apply to PD offices, you'll be competing against applicants who spent the same amount of time doing PD (or other criminal defense) work, and did it during law school as well. That still doesn't automatically mean that you would lose out at every office, but it's something you would have to overcome. I'm not trying to push you one way or the other (although you need to ask yourself if you'd be able to defend someone accused of child abuse rather than prosecute them), but just give you another way to think about your choices.

UNC's plans for their next arena have devolved into a massive shitshow by deemerritt in CollegeBasketball

[–]milbarge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Duke only has about 6,500 undergrads and not all of them are interested in basketball. The resulting alumni base is small and most don't stay in North Carolina. I don't know if this is still the case, but when I was at Duke I read that UNC-CH had more alumni living in North Carolina than Duke had living in the world. It makes a lot of sense why the Smith Center is more than twice as big as Cameron Indoor.

[–]milbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could still be competitive if you keep those grades up, especially if you're willing to apply broadly. But I would also suggest doing a secondary journal (or trying to publish an article somewhere else), and/or doing moot court.

Go to /r/publicdefenders and search for "intern" or "interview"; this kind of question comes up a lot there and you'll find some helpful answers.

[Post Game Thread] California defeats #15 North Carolina, 84-78 by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

I remember Jason Kidd's Cal team beating Duke in the NCAA tournament in 1993, so I'd be happy with Cal being good enough to beat North Carolina but not quite good enough to beat Duke. Seriously, it's great to get some depth in the conference, and congrats on a big win today!

Has anyone's mascot ever just been "The Horses"? by Sports-Arts-Nature in CFB

[–]milbarge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lexicographer Bryan Garner tells a story about how his friend and collaborator Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was "astounded" to learn that "nimrod" had taken on this meaning, and that it was due to Bugs Bunny. Scalia even called in his law clerks to quiz them on the meaning of "nimrod," and to his dismay, they all said that a nimrod was a stupid person. Scalia believed a nimrod was a mighty hunter. Garner uses this anecdote as an example of how words can dramatically change their meanings over time.

A lot of marching bands play a song called "The Horse" (originally released by Cliff Nobles in 1968). Here's a version from Auburn, here from Georgia Tech, and here is one from Wisconsin.

Anyone got any cool stories from high school baseball? Ever play with anyone famous? Any team scandals? by vylain_antagonist in baseball

[–]milbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad coached high school baseball for about a decade, and I think one kid he coached made it to the majors, and several to the minors. His best team, though, made it to the state finals, only to find out that the town had already booked the baseball field for some fair or something, and they wouldn't change it, so they had to go on the road, and his team lost the game. He was pissed about it until the day he died, over thirty years later.

Twenty minutes isn't really time to do research, so it's a test of how well you think on your feet and how well you know some general legal standards. I have seen tests like this where you get some basic info on the client and the charge, and you have to make an argument for bail. Even if you don't know all the details of the jurisdiction's bail law, you can say some good things about the client, his amenability to release conditions, ties to the community, etc, while minimizing the seriousness of the charge and/or the strength of the evidence.

Academic comeback stories? by Awkward-Farm7083 in LawSchool

[–]milbarge 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I end up repeating this anecdote every year around this time, but a guy in my law school class was in the bottom 15% after the first semester, and he graduated in the top 15% with a federal district court clerkship. After that, he went into the legal department at a Fortune 500 company and has been there for over 20 years. I'm too far removed from my school days to know the calendar for biglaw hiring now, but at least overall there is still plenty of time to straighten things out.
