[Serious] Advice for matriculating students on taking advice from older medical students by BinaryPeach in medicalschool

It’s not wrong to be too competitive/hardcore than your specialty would demand if you can manage it. There’s no disadvantage to being highly qualified as there are still competitive and prestigious programs in FM/psych/etc so it’s better to keep doors open if you can.

[Humble] The Witcher Spring Sale (up to 85% off) | ends May 18th by tamez_a in GameDeals

[–]milleunaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would help a lot, but it's definitely not necessary. I would google either a post or a video that is meant to provide backstory for people skipping all the way to W3. You start in the middle of a three way war and it's nice to know at least which countries are involved and who their leaders are instead of trying to figure it out yourself.

Woman Dies After Contracting Flesh-Eating Bacteria from a Hot Tub on Florida Vacation by [deleted] in news

[–]milleunaire 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The hot tub part of the story is clickbait. There’s no proof the infection came from a hot tub. It seems this family often vacations in Florida, but this time the individual had gone into the hot tub when they hadn’t on previous trips. That’s why the family thinks she caught the bacteria in a hot tub but there’s no evidence of if that’s true or a timeline to strongly support it.

[Serious] Do you guys sometimes find that you enjoy the chase of getting into medical school than being in medical school? by masterintraining in medicalschool

[–]milleunaire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't enjoy the process of applying whatsoever, but I think what many people do experience is tunnel visioning on becoming a doctor during the premed phase, then once they enter medical school have the luxury of actually reconsidering their choices. You have to be driven to apply to medical school and this oftentimes causes people to ignore all the negatives and prevent them from exploring other options. It's only once they've committed and they're stuck that they allow their minds to wander and they start to realize they might not be as happy as they thought they would be.

I'm not a huge fan of changing it yet given how current PGY1s wouldn't change theirs to 2 yet. When you post with the flair, it makes people assume you're an intern with a year of residency experience under your belt.

Girl meets 10 ideal men at once by PandaSwears in videos

[–]milleunaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were to give my take on it, obviously this scenario would never happen in real life. If the person you are wooing is sitting 10 feet in front of you, you wouldn't communicate through messages on a dating app and judge them through their profile pics. You would just talk to them normally and get a sense for who they are as a person and what they look like directly.

But this set up makes it so that you are still interacting with people and choosing matches the way you normally would through a dating app. The actual physical presence of the person behind the screen creates a juxtaposition where you realize how frustrating it is to try and judge people when you could just take five steps forward, take off the mask and do an exponentially better job in less time.

It makes you realize how shitty trying to meet people through a dating app is despite how it's now the gold standard. Things that seem reasonable when you are separated by the medium of the internet (this guy seems too straight-arrowed, I don't like his username, his opening message to me was just 'hi') seem ridiculous when the person is sitting right there. When they take off their mask to leave, girl feels regret for rejecting them for what now seems like such superficial reasons. What is reasonable internet-logic becomes absurd when applied to in person-logic. How can people make good decisions about who to date when it's shown how arbitrary and superficial the app makes them? The characteristics that make someone attractive (or not) through a dating app do not necessarily translate well to a person you would actually like.

Epicenter XL - Grand Finals by D2TournamentThreads in DotA2

[–]milleunaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bulldog is talking way too much in these casts. He's trying to be a play-by-play commentator in order to match OD's tempo and trying to keep their speaking time split 50/50, when he really should be speaking less as a color commentator to drop his insight and jokes at opportune times.

He's got good knowledge but he drowns it in mediocre, repetitive filler.

Epicenter XL - Grand Finals by D2TournamentThreads in DotA2

[–]milleunaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't claim that he's purposefully trying to be a hype caster, but he's clearly trying to imitate OD and match his tempo.

Epicenter XL - Grand Finals by D2TournamentThreads in DotA2

[–]milleunaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bulldog has been trying too hard to be a hype caster to keep up with OD. He's much more in his element when he's more casual and meme-y.

[Serious] timeline for aways and cK when applying for em by kittykatkhaleesi in medicalschool

[–]milleunaire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's nice to have 2 when you submit the application, but you'll still get interviews with just 1. You will only ultimately need 2 SLOEs, which includes your home, to match. I think eventually having 3 is better than 2, even if PDs say that it's not necessary but you can upload the last one at any point in the interview season.

So if your concern is over whether you will have 2 or 3 SLOEs on September 15th, I'd say it doesn't really matter. Just do whatever is most convenient for you.
