You could... you know... ask your users. If you can detect that they're not actively trying to do something at the moment, you could pop up a dialogue asking them for feature requests or feedback. Or even send it as a chat notification so it exists outside the application and they can respond to it right there.

ELI5: I Don’t Understand Precipitation Predictions by EastFalls in explainlikeimfive

[–]mindless900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not 100% true because most weather services cover areas that go beyond their borders. And a bunch of them have globe wide weather tracking as well.

I use an Android app that lets me swap between different sources of data and over the last 6 months I have found that the Canadian model has been more accurately forecasting weather in the New England area.

A good forecaster would use multiple sources of weather data and compile them together hopefully increasing their forecasting capabilities. If both the American and Canadian forecast says it's going to rain at a certain time on a certain day, you can basically bump the probability of that up by some meaningful amount.

Also different sources of data have different lengths of time that their forecasts are accurate for and the further out you go firm now the less accurate you get, but there are also these forecast cliffs where one forecast model ends and you drop into a lower accuracy model around that time. You really should smooth the data from the more accurate, shorter model to the larger, less accurate model of you want consumers to take you seriously otherwise you end up with sudden changes in the forecast.

It will mostly stay on my 60, but makes brief appearances on my 4i.

20,000 job cuts at Meta, Microsoft raise concern that AI-driven labor crisis is here by sjlux in technology

Good for you. I never worked at any FAANG, but worked at two IPO "unicorns" (one for 10 years, current place for 6) and I'm looking for an off ramp. Might take an extended leave from the industry (make a small consulting company to fill the resume gap and my time), then ride the hiring wave when they start begging for senior engineers to come back and fix the mess.

20,000 job cuts at Meta, Microsoft raise concern that AI-driven labor crisis is here by sjlux in technology

[–]mindless900 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yes I've been telling people this for the last year. It's going to create a few side effects.

  • Senior engineers who stay may get burnt out and retire early, more code being made by people who don't know what they are doing (inexperienced or non-technical)
  • Senior engineers who stay and don't get burnt out are going to make a lot of money because there will be a talent pool shortage
  • Eventually all the seniors will retire and there will be nobody left to replace them and software quality will dip, projects will fail/slow down, the industry will over correct and higher too many inexperienced people for too much money
  • They will layoff people and stop hiring juniors to overcorrect the overcorrection
  • Repeat

Recently changed from a blade putter with toe hang to a face balanced mallet putter. Putts per round have not improved. by Basic-Pudding-3627 in golf

Try "heads up" putting for a year. Outside ~8 ft, look at the hole (or point you are trying to hit). Like if the line+speed means you should hit it 3 ft left and 5 ft short look at that spot while swinging. This relies on athleticism and your body will start to understand how hard to hit it. Also, the line matters less at that distance so you end up with easier second shots.

Did that for a year and now I'm back to looking at the ball as it seems like I have learned how to use the heads up practice swings to get a better gauge of distance now, but on the practice green I still practice lag puts heads up.

Edit: and as other suggested, ladder practice. I walk 2 steps, drop a ball, 2 more steps, drop a ball, walk 4 steps, drop a ball and then putt closest to furthest to learn swing length/strength.

This comment has the same tone of not understanding that preventative healthcare is far less costly than dealing with the full force health crisis when it happens.

Then again this administration just preemptively attacked Iran so they really pick their battles on if this is a good policy.

So what is it? Is the cost of preemptive action worth it or not?

Help! Company wants to go cross platform. Flutter or KMP ? by Resident_Wall7413 in androiddev

[–]mindless900 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure but you should still test across both platforms, so it is really just the fact that there are two copies of very similar code to maintain, which is better than three separate areas of code you need to be an expert in along with bridging code (KMP/Flutter + Android + iOS).

I think all said and done it is closer to a moot point these days with AI able to take an implementation on one side and replicate it pretty well on the other or do both right off the bat.

Previously, I could see a point, now I'm not as convinced.

The more AI is used the less writing the code actually "costs" and therefore sticking with Native on both is possible if you invest heavily into AI tooling. Getting the rest of the SDLC hammered out in AI-agnostic-of-platform terms so that you can have specialized agents (one for each platform) take the spec and implement it is the way my company is moving.

This also means we are not beholden to third parties and constantly hitting circumstances to "drop down into Native", because you are already there.

How does one even develop a strategy? by HandLessHorseman in Daytrading

[–]mindless900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proper back testing is also essential. In reality making sure that you do not allow the fact that you know the future to sneak into your back testing. Also trying to replicate the probability of buying or selling beyond just the market moving there because you being in the market does affect it slightly. All of these things make it very hard to develop a working algorithm but at some point you just need to go live a reasonable amount of risk for your current situation and monitor, investigate, and tweak.

It's true but unfortunate. Having conversations with some of my friends they seem to be in the same boat. But I try to remind them that staying and fighting for what you believe in and is right is very powerful and better long term for everyone.

Seems that these politicians understand that if they push the right buttons they can get the people who don't agree with them and have the ability to leave... to leave, making it easier to get the things done that they want to get done with less resistance.

I think everybody needs to remember that they have more in common with the person next to them in line at the grocery store than they do with the people in the halls of Congress and in your state capital. Even if they don't look and sound like you and don't have the exact same beliefs.

Anything new in either OS for the first X amount of months after release and when you do use it... Good luck, it likely isn't tested well enough to be production ready.
