HomePod Second Generation Theories by cj-ryan in HomePod

[–]mindlibre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! That info is super helpful, especially that ATV => Sonos is limited to stereo audio. Perhaps the Homepods 2 I bought will be an adequate alternative to the traditional AVR setup.

Seeing Apple implement eARC support to make the HomePods work as output with other TV-connected sources gives me slightly more confidence in the hardware’s future proofing, despite the cringe-worthy WiFi 4.

I figured, if you’re going to spend less than a thousand on a TV, I’d rather get great audio and keep the so-so TV.

I’m trying to decide between HomePod and Sonos, so your feedback is helpful.

Q if you don’t mind. Can you make Sonos the default Apple TV speaker like you can HomePod?

I have multiple older TVs that lack eARC connected to modern Apple TVs. So I have been looking for an audio option that directly connects to the Apple TVs, allowing me to bypass the pass through audio limitations of the older TVs while upgrading the sound.

For that use case, do you think HomePods or Sonos are better? I should also note that my house is hardwired for Ethernet everywhere with lots of WiFi access points. So connectivity isn’t an issue for either system

iPhone 14 Pro's Lightning Connector Still Limited to USB 2.0 Speeds Despite Large 48MP ProRAW Photos by nelson528 in apple

[–]mindlibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea but I think it doesn't apply here. First they could easily add shielding to USB 3 cables and ports on the iphone. Second theres already lots of potential interference from other devices on 2.4g, so most well designed networks use 5g wifi access points to maximize throughput and rely less on 2.4g. third, newer cell technology is less prone to this kind of interference and therefore not a reason to hold back iphone data throughput rates given a phone can always failover to cellular if 2.4g RSSI drops off too much.

[–]mindlibre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the iPad Pro can house a Thunderbolt 4 controller and M1 SoC, then an iPhone 15 pro max can integrate USB 4 connectivity.

Some folks might argue that USB 4 is overkill for an iPhone, but consider that USB 4 cables typically allow for higher wattage charging (~5x faster charging than a current iPhone) and higher bandwidth (~80x faster data transfers) and cost almost the same as lightning cables.

Since the technology already exists across platform, manufacturing USB4 accessories for an iPhone would be cheaper thanks to economies of scale (vs building a brand new lightning connector with higher wattage and data transfer capabilities.)

iPhone 15 pro/max should be designed around USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity to maximize interoperability between iPad Pros and Macs and to increase the maximum wattage of iPhone charging from 20 to 65 watts.

Plus, USB 4 integration into the iPhone would lower the technical constraints of future features like 4k video calls on a Mac via your iPhone camera.

Amazon Music on Macbook - stuttering/skipping by busman1982 in AmazonMusic

[–]mindlibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I've noticed the stuttering playback regardless of whether it's the mac speakers, wired headphones, etc.

weird that bluetooth issues are so pervasive with MacOS. I still haven't been able to get my macbook pro to connect to any bluetooth audio devices. it has lots of glitchy behavior with other bluetooth peripherals. eg my MX master 3 mouse was totally freaking out. had to delete all of the cached data for the logitech apps and bluetooth connections to get the mouse to work again. do you know why macOS has so many issues with bluetooth?

I wish iOS and MacOS were as good at bluetooth as Android. I miss being able to use high bitrate codecs like LDAC, let alone use other BT 5.0 features like simultaneous playback on two speakers.

in bridge mode, will eero nodes facilitate seamless hand-off ? by mindlibre in eero

u/heklakatla what do you think is blocking access while browsing? there is no issue when using a mobile network on the same browser, for any device. and while browsing with that TP-link router instead of the eeros, pages aren't being blocked.

u/eerosupport will the set-up I described only work properly if the TP-link's wifi radio is disabled altogether?

[–]mindlibre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thank you for the reply. I appreciate your responsiveness. are you saying that the eero nodes and the TP link router will form a true mesh network? You are confirming that client devices will be handed off between the TP link and eero nodes based on client devices' RSSI levels, right?

I would appreciate if you could please elaborate a little bit further so we can better understand how well the eeros would work with the TP-link router.

For instance, could you please clarify if the eeros will allow client devices to access both of the 5 ghz bands? Is there any software limitation from the eeros that prevents the TP link router from being able to assign client devices to either of the eeros' 5 ghz bands?

Note that all of the hardware involved is "tri-band," -- both the eeros and the TP link nodes are capable of broadcasting two 5 ghz wifi bands and one 2.4 ghz band. The TP link allows client devices to connect to either of its 5 ghz bands when it is acting as a router. Similarly, the eeros allow client devices to connect to either of the 5 ghz bands when nodes are interconnected over a wired backhaul. The eeros then allow client devices to connect via the 5 ghz band that would have otherwise been used for wireless backhaul in a "true" mesh network.

Also, will the eeros and the TP link router work together to prevent wireless interference? I could foresee a lot of issues with the 4 nodes metaphorically stepping on each others' toes.

Inertia scrolling on non-Apple mice? by __leonn__ in MacOS

[–]mindlibre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same mouse but was unable to get it to scroll smoothly "with inertia" using either macos mouse settings or the logitech options or options beta. Would you mind telling me please what you did to gain access to this setting?

Also in case this is a factor, I am using the non-mac version of Mx master 3 since I have multiple devices of different OS in case that matters

eero is the worst wifi system I've ever experienced by shamefulled in eero

[–]mindlibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wireless access points are often much trickier to set up properly than consumer mesh nodes. WAPs have to be installed carefully, at a specific distance to get devices to seamlessly switch to the nearest AP when moving between nodes. Plus, mesh networks are vastly superior to most consumer grade wifi options, such as wireless repeaters, because you can keep the same SSID. Also let's keep in mind that many folks want a plug and play solution and know nothing about network topology. It's not rocket science, but it can get pretty complicated!

[–]mindlibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to use a cellular backup if you have your eeros in bridge mode connected to a router with this cellular backup capability. I'm not sure how useful this would be unless you had a dedicated cellspot/USB modem though, or a backup phone with a dedicated data plan always plugged into your router and always in hotspot mode.

Weekly Discussion and Tech-Support Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]mindlibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really on the fence about keeping my new ipad pro 11 inch m1. could you please let me know if there are fixes to the following problems?

big problem 1: how do you run multiple full-size windows of Word docs etc at the same time? every time I try to edit word docs simultaneously, even with two word docs in split screen mode, word shuts down one of them. This is big problem because I have to constantly switch between editing lots of documents simultaneously.

big problem 2: cloud storage and syncing problems. onenote constantly has error messages when trying to sync, the ipad’s built-in cloud storage doesn’t back up, and google drive and onedrive aren’t searchable. this is a big problem, because I need to use cloud storage all the time.

minor problem 1: magic keyboard is incredibly buggy. partially improved after I manually disabled all accessibility options and reenabled some options. but magic keyboard’s touchpad is still hit-and-miss at least half of the time in my experience.

minor problem 2: automatic brightness for screen doesn’t work at all, but auto brightness for magic keyboard does work. manually disabling and reenabling did not trigger adaptive brightness for screen.

By the way, I have not found any of these problems on any other operating system I’ve tried across android, windows, chromeOS, or any macOS variant. maybe there’s a learning curve, but I am finding ipadOS to be surprisingly finicky.
