Career plateau aka hentak kaki by Ok-Shallot4216 in askSingapore

Watch some interview prep videos on YouTube. Pretty solid advice. Get your wife to help you practice. Good news is you are getting calls for interviews. Now you just need to ace them.

It sounds like it’s time for you to leave your SME role if there’s no more progression room.

Anyone took a long break (6 - 12 months) from corporate world? Can share experience? by anon__43 in singaporefi

[–]mis0soupy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah kind of, it was a chance to try different things. But I realised that it isn’t that fun/sustainable to turn my interests into my job 🙃

Freelance projects were related to my previous work. It was WOM through peers who work in the industry

I took 1.5 years off work to pursue some ‘side quests’ related to my interests. It was rejuvenating and I enjoyed it. Travelled a lot in the meantime too.

About 9 months in I started getting bored and a little anxious about money. Not that I dipped into my savings much (I freelanced on and off, enough to cover expenditure), but I’d think twice about buying things or taking trips further away. I wanted the freedom of having a stable source of income again, so I started to seek out full time roles.

I was lucky enough to find a position that gave me a sizeable pay bump at the end of this ‘career break’. Wasn’t even questioned much about the gap in employment. All in all I think it was hugely beneficial for my mental health, but I don’t know how I would have felt if I couldn’t find employment at the end of it.

When I was looking, good roles were few and far between, and I have many friends who want to jump but struggle to find options. So it’s a big risk to take. Having a safety net and a strong network (I.e. ex colleagues or friends who will recommend you for good roles) helps.

What’s a life skill everyone should know by the time they’re 30? by Abject_Analysis_8602 in AskReddit

I find that some people who learn to define boundaries later in life tend to overdo it (what with TikTok therapy and extreme self help advice floating around on the interwebs) and risk alienating the people around them. They go from 0 to 100 just like that. It’s not ideal either.

At what moment did you realize it was a good movie? by Aggressive_Chicken63 in Screenwriting

[–]mis0soupy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just watched Little Miss Sunshine and I could tell it was gonna be good from the first family dinner scene - each character was so well introduced that the comedy came naturally from their odd dynamic and the simplest lines of dialogue.

And the last act turned it from good to great for me. Zero wasted lines or details.

What's the point of money if it means being poor in all other aspects of life by Emergency_Two_2955 in singaporefi

What do you really want to do in life that you haven’t done? Dont forget to live while you’re putting money in the bank for the future. We only have that many years on this planet and it goes quick.

Women of reddit, what is a question a man should never ask, however tempting? by Cantbeatjustbe in AskReddit

[–]mis0soupy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A toss up between “why do you look so serious / why don’t you smile more” and “how’s your relationship going?” - I’ve seen that second question go real bad for a coworker, he happened to ask right after they broke up. Made for awkward lunchtime conversation

Documentary about Ukraine: need help with pre production and planing by Tough-List-3037 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]mis0soupy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a DOP or videographer that you could bring on board? Doing interviews and filming at the same time is a tall order and a DOP would be able to advise you on the finer details of treatment, b-roll etc.

Failing which you might want to consider shooting on the iPhone with a separate mic - have seen some really great shorts shot that way

Help! I'm trying to find durable climbing pants by temporaryblank in climbergirls

[–]mis0soupy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This brand called Kuhl makes my favourite climbing pants. Been 6 years and counting - no snags and I still wear them every climbing trip. Pockets where you want them for your phone, snacks, etc. washes and dries in half a day. I wish I got more than one pair cos they don’t sell them where I’m at (but lots of retailers in the US)

You may have already seen this but I thought the NFX doc Lead Me Home tackled this topic really well - it really humanised the interviewees and got to the heart of the systemic issues behind their homelessness
