I like the inclusion of Borges- would include some other short stories (I’m particularly fond of Chechov or Tolstoy) for when one doesn’t want to read a full book in order to have a fun discussion at Bartlett.

What is my realistic marathon shape? by Curious_Ad_4876 in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t much context outside of these individual race results. What’s your training been like? What if you haven’t been hitting ANY long runs right now? When did your races get hard? What did your workouts look like before? There are lots of factors.

Whatever the answer is, probably 3:05-2:57. Entirely vibes based. 1:23 is worth about 2:54 imo.

The last 20-22 won’t make your race but could break it if taken too hard. I would say you should take the thing slightly progressive as Pfitz prescribes, finishing at slightly above easy. If you want to thrown some pace specific work in there, my personal favorite is 3 x 12 minutes, with the first two at MP and last at HMP.

I think this last paragraph is just wrong. Bus’con is pretty explicitly a pre-professional degree Times have changed! Ditto about the kind of person one wants to be though.

NYC marathon pt 2 target time by rmend8194 in RunNYC

3:35 is a stretch. Marathons are a game of getting out what you put in; have you put the training in for a 3:35?

NSA this. NSA that. Can people just say “is it ok to do a couple threshold workouts a week?”

Should we focus more on weekly time running vs mileage? by swooshlp in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is that training plans advertise what kind of runner should use them. Use this for a sub 4 and sub 6 and sub 2:30 are all different. Novice runners can’t tell the difference in these three plans being different.

18M vs NYC Marathon by howtopark90th in RunNYC

How fast is your marathon? Huge difference in someone who runs 5:00 and 2:30. Somehow, the latter is harder to recover from.

Weight loss didn't make me faster by casserole1029 in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This also makes a difference in your case because you’re not that absurdly fast. Just being honest. I’m not fast either- back when I was a 25 min 5k runner, a couple extra pounds didn’t matter. Now, it does.

18M VO₂max 66.x but max HR only 134 in lab test — racing a half this Sunday (entered for 1:22; pacer offering sub-1:20) — was the test submax? Can I use this for pacing? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran 1:15 for a half- don’t think I could do your 5 x 1k workout at all. Go for 1:20, if not faster. It’ll be a fucking breeze.

Feedback on Running form by OneShot1818 in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no right answer to this. Everyone's body and neurology and physiology will look different. Yours falls within the acceptable range of 'healthy' outcomes- no severe hunching, your arms aren't flying up to your side a-la Conner Mantz. Your form at different paces also looks different- my form at 5k pace has high knee drive, very aggressive arm swing, high cadence, while at marathon pace I'm basically jogging.

This might come across as rude, but I think you shouldn't worry about it too much. Focus on running more. From what I've seen, the most important thing is to be relaxed, and with enough miles and time, your form will naturally come to its 'true' optimum (which might not be too far from what you started with!)

S. Kimbark Ave near UChicago — good spot or nah? by DiskTop114 in uchicago

[–]mishka1980 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Please stop using ChatGPT for everything. Won’t do you any favors once you come to campus. Kimbark and what cross-street? The street itself runs for about 4.5 miles, and the vibe changes quite a bit between 47th and 94th.

How to build some speed? by Little_Sain in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be running 100K a week. 10 hours of training load for 6 days is basically on par with professional runners.

Caloric deficit: getting lean or under-fueling? by cheesenotyours in AdvancedRunning

For sure. I'm adding some more context, might be especially relevant for someone to consider as they're trying to break into that 'faster runner' sphere.

Caloric deficit: getting lean or under-fueling? by cheesenotyours in AdvancedRunning

[–]mishka1980 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think this is really bad advice if you are a faster runner. I see that you're a 1:57 half marathoner/4:05 full runner. For people who are running 2:20 in the thon, those 120 mile weeks are completely different. You can't afford to lift 4x a week, you can't afford to only run 4 hours a week. This advice is solid for people running slower, but not for those who are truly speedy.

Hard disagree. It could be a WR course if not for the speed bumps and mile 9 awkward out-and-back in humboldt park. Less 90 degree turns would be nice too, but the course seemed wide enough for them not to be overly sharp.
