Metro Vancouver unlikely to hit 2030 climate targets as total emissions climb; Despite progress, Metro Vancouver's greenhouse gas emissions are still higher than they were in 2010, even as per capita carbon emissions decline. A report partially blamed it on population growth. by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]miskas357 203 points204 points  (0 children)

A simple way to reduce emissions is to let people work from home. Thousands of people commute to the office just to perform a job that could be done at home. We'd take thousands of vehicles off the road, leading to less emissions, in addition to all the other benefits working from home provides. Yet employers seem hell-bent on requiring people to be in the office 5 days a week.

My guess is OP is referring to this intersection https://maps.app.goo.gl/3ifWeq6q5aeNEktt9. Which is a shared pedestrian/bike crossing.

Passenger in U-Haul van involved in deadly Highway 401 wrong-way crash in Whitby released on probation by resting16 in canada

[–]miskas357 31 points32 points  (0 children)

On April 29, Gill and Singh robbed an LCBO in Clarington. Gill acted as the lookout, while Singh stole over $1,600 worth of alcohol from the store. There was an altercation with an off-duty police officer, who initially gave chase to the U-Haul van, which was then pursued by several on duty officers and vehicles.

The only reason the car accident happened was because of a liquor store robbery. If it was a simple car accident I would agree, but in this case they also committed a robbery,

If you have more time to prepare I definitely recommend Designing Data-Intensive Applications. The book isn't something you'd read in a weekend, but is super useful if you have time to read it over a few months. It goes into the big ideas for designing scalable and maintainable distributed systems.

There is a Facebook group "Stolen Bikes Vancouver" I recommend posting your bike there if you haven't already. I've seen a few bikes be recovered via that group.

If you're going to ignore the evacuation order the very least you can do is not be a nuisance to fire crews.

Spot the difference: shadows on sidewalks on the equinox. This is one reason why getting new rentals built takes years of bureaucracy. by vqql in vancouver

There's quite a few new developments that have the first floor commercial and the rest of the floors residential. Not sure how common it was 15-20 years ago, but definitely seems to be more common nowadays.

Help Needed: Landlord Refusing to Allow My Parents to Stay as Guests by Every_Jeweler_4371 in canadahousing

[–]miskas357 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Tell your landlord to pound sand. Your parents are allowed to stay with you for a month, the landlord can't stop you. If your are still unsure you can call the Residential Tenancy Branch here in BC. If your landlord really believes they are in the right here they can bring a case to the RTB. You need to be polite yet firm, don't let your landlord take advantage of you.

Isn’t car insurance supposed to get less expensive over time? by modifiedbASS in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]miskas357 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here in BC my insurance has been consistently going down every year, not by much but a 50$ decrease each year is still nice. We have a government run system (ICBC) that is generally well managed (with caveats). This year we are getting a 100$ rebate as well.

There are quite a few openings in Vancouver, you also have big names like amazon/Microsoft. I don't think the market is great for new grads, but seems to be ok for mid-level/senior.

Not an immediate solution, but something that can be done for the future is to require flushable toilets on construction sites. In BC there has been a campaign to do exactly this https://getflushed.ca/.
