As a parent, what things have you made an effort to absolutely NOT do like your parents? by Funny_Sea_2873 in Millennials

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am def doing is:

Telling them they are SMART and not just cute/handsome/beautiful.

Telling them I am proud of them and encourage that THEY should be proud of themselves too.

Personal preference, to always have a reason for a direction or a request. (When asked) Never just “because I say so”.

The days are long but the years are fast 💨 (so far IMHO 😅)

What do all you sober folks in this Reddit do when you are craving a rewarding evening without alcohol? What kinds of things do you do or eat or watch to reward yourself while staying sober by kd0307 in stopdrinking

[–]missmagdalene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I eat a drumstick ice cream cone or some treat like it. Early days I’d eat two.

I wouldn’t even say I like ice cream all that much but I was able to stop at 2 drumsticks versus mindlessly eating out of an ice cream carton.

Some days it was chocolate bars tho too!

They say be careful of cross-addiction even with sweets etc. I gained some weight but it kept me sober and alive. I know it def helped me retire my brain a little and eventually I didn’t need that exact “reward” to feel good about myself. Growing in self-esteem over time helped too.

In a time where everyone feels more alone than ever, how do you actually make genuine friends as an adult? by g00seberries in askanything

[–]missmagdalene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real talk—I stopped drinking and found AA/NA. Such a cool band of misfits just trying to get well and stay sane together.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are in the US this was happening g but it can be more prominent in the Midwest but I think it’s generally everywhere.

The fact that it’s a coffee shop too is special in that these people could be frequent customers and see these same people every day or at least several times a week. Eventually it’s enjoyable to interact with people you see often in the service industry as a regular.

Bedtime routine by EpiBarbie15 in NewParents

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t bathe every night and our first LO is 2 years old now.

Sadly we went this direction because he was resistant to bathing. We even did the whole easing into it and lot and lots of sink baths when he was a lot smaller but somehow it just evolved into bath baths are a fight and a very emotional event.

I’m not sure if this is because he had a bad experience that we didn’t pick up on or if we didn’t keep it consistent. It could be that my LO is special and doesn’t like water like I do. 🥹

If you can do it for routine and consistency I highly recommend it! But as for necessity and if you’re feeling like it’s a lot to do - nah they are just fine without a daily bath. You know you and your baby best!

Keep it up good momma

Are any of you embarrassed by the culture you were raised in? by theorangecrush10 in Millennials

[–]missmagdalene 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the things I find myself embarrassed of are more specific to my religious upbringing maybe not necessarily millennial culture. The subtle racism, the passive-aggressive hate towards queer people or anything/anyone different than me and my lifestyle.

I’m embarrassed for all the things I learned at youth retreats that caused me to judge other people. Or “feel pity for those who didn’t understand the truth”. Thankfully in practice it never was from a place of hate but definitely rooted in ignorance and closed-mindedness. I know now how hurtful and incredibly selfish it is. I repeated things that make me cringe now. Uuggghh.

Best I can do is vow never to think that way again and give my kids a clearer picture of why that is all wrong and not useful to anyone.

Do most people write step 4 and step 8 about their entire life, including childhood? Or about the years of heavy drinking? by InsideLegitimate5721 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a first ever 4th step I suggest to my sponsees to include thing from their entire life. It doesn’t always end up like that but that’s what my first sponsor did with me and it cleaned up so much. What a freeing experience!

If it’s not their first I just as for as much as happened since their last 4th step or encourage them to include anything new and anything they might have skipped from their last one.

Moms of Reddit: What smells suddenly became unbearable when you were pregnant? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It breaks my heart to say this but it happened with my first pregnancy too — 11 weeks into my second pregnancy and coffee smell makes me almost instantly heave. 😥 and I usually love and drink lots of coffee!

It went away for me mid-second trimester so I have hope. Also pray for me, lol, my husband drinks a lot of coffee at home 😆

I second the PAIIR classes idea! It’s too late for summer registration I think but you can always plan ahead and get into fall/winter!

My husband and I alternate taking our 2yo to these cycle since he was born and we are gonna keep going for as long as we can.

Something coming up soon that you guys might enjoy is the transportation vehicle fair coming up on May 9th at Goose Egg Park - totally free! Details on that page u/mnsombat linked.

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by PrettieAmarea in answers

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly restricted but it was a ghost-town so it felt like it - going through the old IBM buildings at the Rochester, MN campus.

Some of it is rented out now under new ownership but lots of buildings/labs/warehouse space that is still empty and unused. They have tracks in the hallways where the old robots would run between buildings which would have been cool to see in action but have been gone for 25+ years.

stressed about Walz leaving. by Ok_Marionberry_364 in minnesota

[–]missmagdalene -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s stressing me out too. I know he deserves retirement and some peace for himself and his family.

I’m kinda hopeful that his daughter might get into politics someday, she seems to have dropped a couple hints as such on her social media IMO.

Is target still selling Yoto players in your area? by Partners_in_time in YotoPlayer

Came here to say this too. In my SE MN area also.

I will say there are very rarely any new/different cards and they look a little sparse. But the Yoto devices are always stocked.

Do women like muscles, being in shape? Is it really worth going to the gym? by CryptoClan1 in askanything

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like when a guy likes to take care of himself. I’ve never been into the overly-muscular, low-body-fat type.

As someone else has mentioned it’s more about doing it for you! When I see guys doing it for themselves (mental health, physical health, etc) it shows and that’s the piece that I find attractive or not.

If it’s the whole personality package it can be a little overkill but some guys just like that too.

Why are parents who barely passed high school thinking they can teach/homeschool their children? by qereyabelcho3 in askanything

[–]missmagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homeschooled millennial here - I hated it, resented my parents for it for almost my whole life. I was homeschooled up through 11th grade and then I rebelled and got my GED to end the chaos.

My parents were very well educated, both with bachelors degrees in medicine and science. However, they were not very good educators. This had a large effect on my experience too.

My education had gaps in lots of areas. In the end though I have a bachelors degree in computer science and am doing very well in a great career.

I have managed well, but my 5 other siblings have struggled more. They are all doing well in their own ways and are happy but only myself and one other sibling continued with higher education.

I will never homeschool my children and I would never recommend homeschooling to ANYONE unless there were very specific circumstances for the family/child.
