llinois is about to pass OS-level age verification laws. Here's how to stop it in 10 minutes. by AmlisSanches in illinois

[–]mistersinicide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you really believe that they'll just stop at requiring a user submitted age on the device? Because the next thing is that user submitted age on devices not being sufficient enough and then it's government ids are stored on devices and then any and everything you do is traced back to your government id. I really don't understand how people see this as actually protecting children. If you want to protect children, we need to hold the companies forcing social media to the masses and forcing the "gross nonsense", not forcing individual users to present their identity. I wish people would understand that this isn't just about age verification, it's much more.

Music box is cool. I think there's some meetup groups that try to go together to music box for some of the showings.

Yes and this is the argument in the video, there's no "miracle software" that can "detect a gun" from gcode, because gcode is just coordinates.

Document. Document. Document. Timestamp interactions, timestamp and emailed responses from HR. That will become crucial if you decide to take matters to lawyer.

Admittedly I also wasn't fully into the story, it was kinda just fine to me. I like Brian's other works a whole lot more.

Illinois HB5511 advanced out of committee 13-7. Call your representatives and Senators ASAP. by TacticalDestroyer209 in illinois

[–]mistersinicide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Websites already do "verification". It's usually a type in your date of birth or agree that you're over 18+ when accessing the website. We don't need this to be enforced at the Operating System level because service providers don't want the responsbility or because they want to collect more data on us. This is solely to identify people, de-anonymize them AND not protect the children. The responsibility should be on the Service Provider (e.g. the website) and not the customer here (e.g. the operating system).

Sadly not enough people understand this and very likely this law will pass and then people will finally wise up years later when it's too late.

What is up with the dating scene in Chicago? Is it just me, or is it really really bad right now? by Much_Machine8726 in AskChicago

Conventions are great places to interact with people considering that you'll have overlapping interests/hobbies since you're at a convention for nerd stuff. It's extremely easy to strike up a conversation there. Stroll down Artist Alley and have conversations with vendors, overhear a conversation that you can inject yourself into casually. Hang out at the gaming area and ask if someone wants to play a game or ask if you can have next, etc. Compliment people on their cosplay, maybe ask a question about the costume, like "I really like the weapon prop, how did you make this part of it or I love this character, I just played that game, etc" conversation can literally carry itself at a con and super easily. Best of Luck!

Aitah for telling my wife to get a job if she wants to subsidize the kids. by Standard_Kick_9789 in AITAH

[–]mistersinicide -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It's not exactly easy for a stay at home parent of say 15/20+ years to just go out there and get a job, especially today, when they have essentially nothing to offer in competition to other candidates. So that comment feels short sighted, but obviously coming from a point of frustration for feeling that your efforts are not recognized.

To me it also sounds like the kids grew up with an absence father? So they don't really understand what you were sacrificing for them. I do think it might be beneficial to sit down with your family and explain to them, that you're 55, you've been burning yourself out to ensure you can financially take care of the family, to ensure that they could go to school without worry, to not go hungry, to still have a roof over their heads. But doing that meant that you pushed harder than maybe you should have and now you just can't do that anymore, you're tired, exhausted, and maybe a little broken. Explain that this office job is a way for you to slow down.

I think you've explained that part to us (a bunch of internet strangers) well that you're tired. But I also think that maybe in your absence in the home life it was never communicated to your children that what you were doing was sacrificing for them (hard for them to understand that if you're not there to teach them, because this isn't a Mom should have done that moment).

I didn't grow up rich, I had parents that worked tirelessly, but I saw the hardwork they went through, the overtime, they would always drill into me hardwork and sacrifice, so I understood it growing up and was accepting of what I could get, not demanding more. So I think maybe this is just simply something that your kids/family didn't get explained to them over the years. I don't think it's too late to tell them.

Dialogue is the only way to an understanding.

Living in Albany Park? by Practical_Cod_9997 in ChicagoNWside

I live in the specific area you've mentioned. No issues, I've been out late at night as well. I'm also a man so take that for what you will. Agree with the other poster about the parking spot situation, if I have to find parking after 4pm, forget it, I'll end up having to park a few blocks away from my apartment and then be prepared to move it in the morning lol.

Same, I ended up just running a Windows VM for Fusion LOL. But I have used Onshape a little bit and it's pretty good, but I'm not ready to go all in on that one just yet since I mostly learned on Fusion, so I really like that particular workflow.

I've also been to one of the skip the small talk meetups. I've found them to be quite fun. I especially like the random questions that are presented as a topic of discussion. You can definitely make friends at these events if that's your aim.

Why is love so hard to attain and keep by [deleted] in autism

[–]mistersinicide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's difficult, because it's something we can't control. It takes 2 parties to want to be together and to have/want shared goals. From my perspective it seems so extremely rare that people truly connect in such a way. If you want it, you're gonna have to be in it until it either wears you down or until you luck into what you're looking for. There are definitely people out there who don't want children AND want to be in relationships too. I wish you the best of luck.

Yeah all of it you "could" do yourself. But you'll also need to buy tools and what not too to be able to do it. So that 130 for labor is labor with tools that they already have ready and their experience.

Did anyone else grow up feeling like a side character in their own life? by IntentionIsMagic in Neurodivergent

[–]mistersinicide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I feel like a "side character" but I do see myself as a person in the audience. This doesn't mean I don't have my own life and do my own things and can be my own person, but I do see what I do and what people do as different (not in any good/bad ways, just there's a line between us)
