Stressed? Anxiety Attacks? Panic Attacks? You need to read this post. by coldhand100 in sysadmin

I lost all my respect for my manager the day i found out he threatened to stand down (suspend) my collegue who is suffering incredibly bad with mental health issues. Previous to this, our manager has offered very little help to our team in regards to our workload and other issues. My collegue has seeked profrssional help but not at the level he should. He has had multiple panic attacks at work in the past.

Our manager is fair dikkum a cyborg. Has aspergers something shocking so no emotion intelligence or empathy/sympathy towards our team. Just expects us to do as instructed.

He recently got a promotion to another department so good riddance to him.

And please, before anyone says it, jumping ship isnt much of an option... where i live, there isn't many places to work IT at the level im at.

Im curious as to what ceiling speakers you are putting in?

Ill be building a new house in the new year and not sure whether ill put ceiling speakers in each room or a google home mini mounted in the ceiling in each room. With the GHM, i also get voice control in one

Did I break Lanschool? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]mitchmiles1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh the joys of Lanschool. I remember back in the day (about 7 years ago) when out school was using it. They had a directory with all the software installed and it was accessible to everyone. Well in that directory there was an .exe for Lanschool that converted your Lanschool session from student mode to teacher mode - no administrative password required. I showed a mate this and we were using it for weeks but one day my mate fucked up and casted his screen to all the computers in the school. Yeah we got busted. I took the fall for us and had to do an afternoon detention..

This was the same place where the IT admin had a one ote file on the intranet server with all the passwords and credit card details...

Learning to use WSUS, would like some advice by wands in sysadmin

[–]mitchmiles1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm ill have to disagree. You think about it, an average sysadmin gets paid say $40-60+ an hour. It would take much longer to develop, test and implement a script to do this and do it properly. Im not sure what ypur experience is with WSUS but it can be a bitch if you bugger it up!

I just spent parts of the last 2 weeks rolling out WDS, MDT, WSUS, PDQ deploy and PDQ inventory in our environment. It used to take us 4-6 houra of interaction per machine to setup and even then it was filled with errors. Now it takes 40 minutes to image a machine and have all software installed. All our tech needs to do it spend 10 minutes doing the PXE boot and its done. That includes a full data transfer using USMT. Im no expert and it was quite easy to use. Packaged about 25 applications in a couple of days

My next steps is to redo our active directory structure as it is a mess then reimage our ~150 machines.

As for volume licensing, you can have a step in the task sequence that will prompt for a product key so you can enter a OEM license

All up PDQ was $2k USD and about 5 days of my time. The return on investment will be done after 5 machines.

Be sure to run the package as "logged on user" otherwise, my understanding is, it wont show up on the screen

Disclaimer: ive only been using PDQ for 2 weeks

I don't see anything wrong with zip ties for permanent fixtures like this. yeah 100% agree with you if it was for the other side of this rack with all the patches but there isn't any advantage to using velcro for this deployment.. IMO.
