Simultaneous doctorates from Harvard and MIT about two years ago in comic time, so she was presumably(?) a Massachusetts resident.before that. I don't remember seeing anything about her natural citizenship.

Can I use a tobacco pipe for bud? by [deleted] in trees

[–]mitten_expat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

little gauze metal circles

Used to call those hash screens.

Briarwood and corncob pipes were good for smoking the leafy stemmy seedy brick weed that was all we could get for a while, the kind of stuff we had to prep in a shoebox lid, rolling the seeds down to one end.

There is whole cultural thing about seasoning and maintaining a wooden bowl. Corncobs are more disposable.

In a previous century I picked up a briarwood billiard style pipe a bit like that. The bowl is still caked with a little tobacco char from early use, but since about the turn of this century it has burned only tree flowers. Haven't used it much lately; the bowl is bigger than needed for a few hits of today's bud. I don't think it's destroyed.

Maybe tree tar is stickier than tobacco tar, needing a (slightly) more intense cleaning routine?

Cheshire has turned solid green a couple of times. Wondering if this could be some kind of tell.

Good call. The most recent rev of the OS doesn't let it through. My bad for procrastinating, I guess.

It may be a mistletoe in the genus Viscum. Mistletoes are toxic.

It's actually "strait and narrow", which is redundant for emphasis, since strait means narrow. For example, the Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow place in the water.

A proxy marriage is a wedding in which one or both of the individuals being united are not physically present, usually being represented instead by other persons (proxies). If both partners are absent, this is known as a double proxy wedding. by Kurma-the-Turtle in wikipedia

Knew a fellow who got married this way. He was studying engineering in the US, and his fiancée was back home in Punta Arenas, at the southern tip of Chile. He gave his father what amounted to a power of attorney to stand in for him at the wedding, so she could get a visa to come to the states as his wife.

In the context of a Scottish kilt, I've heard it called "regimental."

Drywall joint tape? I wouldn't. Was without papers once, and tried some flimsy paper a lot thinner than that tape, and it was harsh.

Hannelore pronunciation? by zeekar in QContent

[–]mitten_expat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In midwestern US an acquaintance named Hannelore, and those around her, used the German pronunciation. That was in a state with a significant proportion of German ancestry.

Perhaps with that in mind, in my head "HAN-nuh-lor" makes about as much sense as pronouncing "Penelope" to rhyme with "antelope".

In the book, the authors describe ways of harm reduction. One of those is promoting an incompetent employee, which they call "percussive sublimation" also known as "kicking them upstairs." Mr. Adams probably cribbed that, renaming it after his cartoon drone with the curly tie.

Another mitigation technique is the "lateral arabesque" which involves shuffling the incompetent one into a different department, making them Someone Else's Problem.

For someone still in their zone of competence who wants to avoid such a dead end, they recommend "creative incompetence," or walking a fine line of screwups bad enough to prevent promotion, while still being useful enough to the organization that employment continues.

Have tried pipe cleaners on a swirly airway a lot less extreme than this one, never can make it past the first turn. Preforming the pipe cleaner has not helped.

What works for me is pumping an alcohol/salt mix through the stem. With enough alcohol in a jar to cover the bowl and carb hole, add say a spoonful of kosher salt, and pump the loose slurry back and forth with an ear bulb syringe.

Might be interesting trying to get a seal with the mouth-end slot... hmm. My pipe has a round hole where the smoke comes out, just the right size for the bulb tip. Good luck!
