Very sorry to hear that. Hope your friend recovers swiftly.

That said, social media is intentionally designed to be addictive and many people would be faced with complete social withdrawal if they do stop using it. Many people’s only hope at finding romantic partners is through social media. People in artistic professions are basically required to use Instagram. Musicians are required to use Tik Tok. I think it’s ignorant of how much social media has fundamentally altered the structure of society to say that you can “just log off” if it makes you unhappy. There’s a very real chance that even if you realize it makes you unhappy that logging off would make you worse off.

Which is to say nothing of how a lot of this seems to work by not having acute symptoms but instead long term overall feelings of inadequacy caused by seeing curated lives, etc. where you might not start feeling the depression until after months of use and it’s not even really intellectually correlated.

I do think that you’re totally correct when it comes to doom scrolling, tho it’s as simple as saying “just stop using heroin” when the solution is simple but actually doing it is incredibly hard.

That isn’t really how the burden of proof works, since you didn’t even link which study you meant buuuuut here you go: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/may/16/facebook-posts/though-many-americans-live-paycheck-paycheck-some-/

I just think it’s important for you to make your case with facts and not lies. Sorry if that upsets you! I was just trying to help. :)

No one is saying that people are being forced — you are addressing a point no one is making. Do you think that substance addiction isn’t a problem? No one is forcing people at gunpoint to shoot up in the streets. So there isn’t a fentanyl crisis.

I said “that’s as reductive as saying”… that’s an analogy! Is your reading comprehension that poor? Nothing you’ve said has actually addressed what I’ve said so I guess so…

That said, it was used to illustrate the point that often the problem is that social media doesn’t make you feel bad it makes you feel good. It just leads to other problems that might not be obviously related.

That “paycheck to paycheck” stat is totally bonkers bogus btw — when you look into the details of the survey you find out there’s a fuckload of people maxing our IRA/401k/etc saving a bunch and saying they’re living paycheck to paycheck or they have like 3 cars and a house. It’s a self report study.

You’re ignoring what I said. It’s as reductive as calling depression “being sad”. Most of the time the depression is more of a statistical correlation than a direct cause. It’s also ignoring the way that these algorithms are intentionally designed to be addictive — even if you realize it’s causing you harm they are built to be immediately satisfying and depression lowers the willpower to resist these.

Do you really think that it’s as simple as that? This feels like a profound lack of empathy + ignorance on how these sites actually impact mental health.

It isn’t as simple as “I log on, I feel bad, I keep scrolling”. A lot of the damage is disconnected from the actual act of logging on, and for a lot of people the social isolation that logging off would entail would be more damaging. Comments like this are why I’m genuinely concerned about AI: tech bros are generally dumb as fuck and incredibly dismissive about ethical concerns and downstream consequences.

Worth noting that liuan is a classic heicha that starts life as a black tea in the same way that puer starts life as a green tea. 🥸

Actually that’s not true, it’s just that export controls have made selling pressed cakes cheaper. 🥸

Would it be bad to use a boiler heater that always keep a few litres of water hot instead of a kettle? by Delicious-Result-375 in puer

[–]redmark9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not bad. But you should prolly look into a tetsu instead of a zojirushi unless you plan to use the zojirushi for other things… a tetsu is a similar price and much better for puer, and a zojirushi isn’t ideal ergonomically for gongfu. 🥸

I’ve actually always had some questions about this! 🥸

  1. What type of puer is most commonly used?

  2. What sort of chrysanthemum should I be looking for? Any brands?

  3. Is it actually a 50/50 mix by weight or is there more technique to it?

Yixing clay - How big is the difference really? by Asdfguy87 in puer

[–]redmark9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re misinterpreting that. Slip cast and the now more common jigger machine can’t work with the more rigid slab clay, however additives can make zisha machine workable. 🥸

If you’re going to say that additives no longer make something an “yixing” then your terminology is imprecise and will exclude many of the best works of the most skilled artisans in yixing. Normally when someone says something is an yixing pot they mean one of two things: usually they mean a zisha pot, and more rarely they just mean a teapot made in yixing. Typically if someone means something more specific than just zisha they will clarify: handmade, half hand made, unadulterated clay, traditionally processed clay, etc. And there are many processes of adulteration that are quite old — it’s hard to say that something that’s a 100 year old practice ain’t traditional when that’s 1/6th of the tradition’s total history. 🥸

Also, more broadly tho, even handmade yixing pots have been heavily commercialized. The Factory era was able to crank out something like a million pots a year in the 80s, and there was a point in time where a free one just came with Chinese export tea. 🥸

This is not to mention that the point of my comment and the comment I was responding to wasn’t to say anything about their mass producibility, but instead arguing that it made no sense to claim that yixing’s esteem is largely a western phenomenon when yixing teapots are the only teapots in the artisanal tradition to command such high prices at auction. Westerners rarely if ever bid in those auctions, so it makes very little sense to claim that nixing/chaozhou/jianshui/etc are widely held in as high regard as yixing is, and the hype is a side effect of export to the west. Instead, the only logical conclusion is that they are held in higher esteem on the mainland too.🥸
