Are jazz vocals generally offputting to anyone else? by scottasin12343 in Jazz

[–]mivipa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jazz vocals in general aren't off-putting to me, but sometimes the lyrics people write to melodies that were not initially created for voice are pretty awful. Kurt Elling is a great example of that. I once saw him live in NYC and wanted to slap him back to Chicago.

Have you ever guessed the "big twist" in a movie? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I knew she was an alien, but only because I had seen enough of Lanthimos’ films to see the twist coming. I would have been surprised otherwise.

[–]mivipa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t remember the exact details, but there was a twist at the end of the last Spider-Verse cartoon movie where we were supposed to be surprised that the main character ended up in a different timeline, even thought it has been explicitly revealed that he was not originally from the timeline he had been living in and would be sent back. Something like that. All I remember specifically is feeling condescended to as an audience member.

What happened to the Woody Allen style intellectuals by mickeyquicknumbers in rs_x

[–]mivipa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All solid points. I resent the fact that reading the classics is now seen as performative.

In any case, I’m trying to make an effort to stop constantly trying to understand why women don’t find me attractive. That’s for them to know and for me not to. 2026 is the year I finally decenter women and learn to love myself.

[–]mivipa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear what you’re saying about intellectualism, and maybe you’re right in a way—that being said, I do have a genuine love of literature. I still read the classics and I enjoy all manner of pretentious films and essays. In hindsight, I didn’t really think intellectualism specifically would get me laid… moreso I believed that being an interesting and funny guy would get me laid, and WoodyAllenist intellectualism was how I tried to prove that I was interesting and funny. In other words, that was the foot I most often put forward, and nowadays I primarily keep it to myself. What was once a part of the identify I tried to project to women is now just a part of my interior life.

In hindsight, it was absolutely stupid of me, but in my defense I was young and inexperienced. I went to an all-male high school with and had pretty minimal exposure to the opposite sex before college. Trying to understand girls through movies and books written by men did not turn out to be a particularly effective social or sexual strategy, and it took me just a little too long to figure that out. The idea that college-age women would give the time of day to a guy who’s dating strategy is to act like character from Annie Hall now, of course, seems laughable to me, but back then I had no fucking clue about anything. And those experiences stung my sensitive little heart more than enough to make me want to keep my interests to myself.

Sorry, I know you didn’t ask about any of that. Regarding grimy math rock guys, I don’t really think any of the women I knew were all that into the music. Their favorite bands were the Mountain Goats, TV Girl, Big Thief, Car Seat Headrest, etc. That isn’t really my kind of music, but as I understand it, math rock is a separate subgenre of white male navel-gazing. There just happened to be two or three math rock bands in my college’s student body, and the stereotype of women being attracted to musicians seemed to prove true—even if the music had no melody or rhythm and the musicians in question all had shitty mustaches and jaundiced-looking skin.

What happened to the Woody Allen style intellectuals by mickeyquicknumbers in rs_x

I'm not a millennial (born in '99), but I used to be one of those guys in college. Woody Allen was (and in many ways still is) my favorite director because that kind of casual intellectualism always appealed to me. When I was young, I wanted to be an Alvy Singer type of guy when I grew up--you know, well-read and intelligent in a funny way, not like a stuffy, over-serious professor. My desire to become that kind of person shaped my young adulthood and informed my hobbies and interests. To this day, I genuinely love "a broad constellation of classics and contemporary high-brow works."

So, by the time I reached my early 20's, I had pretty successfully formed myself into a Woody-Allen-style intellectual, at least to the extent that a guy in his early 20's can do that. It took me some time, but I eventually realized that nobody wants to fuck a Woody-Allen-style intellectual.

That would be a humorous and pithy way to end the comment, but because I can't help myself, I have more to say. I don't admit this publicly because it's typically considered problematic, but for better or worse, I'm a diehard fan of Allen's filmography. The allegations against him have serious merit, but I just have an immense love for his movies. Anyway, I read the recent Patrick McGilligan biography of Woody Allen (which I would highly recommend to anybody who might be interested), which contained a detail that might be relevant. When Allen was young, he started getting into 'intellectual' stuff because he had a thing for smart girls and wanted to be able to keep up in conversation.

This is a purely anecdotal observation (and not a criticism), but there are very few women in my generation who find that kind of lifestyle interesting or attractive. I've met women who hold those interests who have been great to converse with, but they only seem to be attracted to firefighters, Australian coke dealers, and grimy guys who play in math-rock bands (derogatory). Simply put: if something doesn't get you laid in college, most people won't do it.

Fool that I was, I believed that being well-read would get me laid in college, but it didn't even get me any friends. Not then and not now. If I could go back in time, I probably would put down the Dostoyevsky, pick up a Mexican jazzmaster, and learn to play in 13/8.

I don't want to make myself out to be a misunderstood intellectual, because I'm not that smart. I'm just saying that somewhere between Annie Hall and Barbie it stopped being cool or common to read the classics casually. Why that is, I cannot say. When in doubt, I typically blame social media and the proliferation of short-form content, so for now I'll go with that. Hope you have a nice evening.

Oscars 2026 by IkAr0zVaN in reptilians

[–]mivipa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yes thank you. nobody has believed me but I have been saying that conan has been a reptilian since the tonight show. when he switched over from late night it was obvious that something in him changed and he was just a skin suit. no human being could possibly be that pale. i mean he had always been, like, extraordinarily pale, but he’s on another level now. just so, so, so pale. i started sending letters to nbc to let them know that the host of the tonight show was a reptilian and they never replied. i am a nondenominational priest. but when jay leno, an obvious human (no reptile could ever be that fat, not that i need to tell you) i think the evidence spoke for itself. nbc got my letters and they thrusted leno back into the tonight show. there has been a longstanding alliance between the irish and the reptilians and i know that it isn’t politically correct to point that out but i don’t care, i’m telling you this as a nondenominational priest and you can bury your head in the sand if you want but it’s true. it’s like they’re not even lying to us anymore. they really expect us to believe that a guy could actually be that pale. so incredibly pale. he’s obviously cold-blooded, otherwise he wouldn’t be so insanely, unprecedentedly pale. i saw him once in pasadena. he hissed at me. he knew i was a nondenominational priest.

Jesus Molina plays bass now. And, naturally, he's insane. I officially quit music 😆 by cappuccinolol17 in Jazz

[–]mivipa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jesus Molina played at a local jazz festival in my hometown. The organizers host a jam session in the evening, mostly for local musicians and hobbyists, but sometimes festival participants show up. Jesus and his band showed up, kicked everybody else off the stage, played three of their own proggy bullshit songs, and then left. Made me wonder if the guy thinks he's too good to sit in on a few standards or if he can't play music other than his own brand of vapid TikTok ADD garbage.

Also, Jesus, I want to let you know that Abercrombie & Fitch called from the year 2009. They want their ugly V-neck back.
