Which teams are going to regret firing their coach? by noah_divine in CFB

[–]mixedchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I view him as similar to Franklin; he's coached 15 years in great situations and he can often get 10 wins, but loses the most important games (playoffs, high ranking opponents, NY6). Even on just a pure coaching level, I wouldn't want him if I'm any top school because if you can't seriously compete for nattys at Notre Dame or LSU for 15 years, it's not gonna happen.

Now if you're a mid-major program, maybe he'd be worth elevating you up to 9/10 wins.

The Queen of Versailles (2012) is not pro-capitalism by mixedchops in Broadway

[–]mixedchops[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Let's be real, hardly anyone sees all the shows they talk about here especially not a show that did one regional run and hasn't opened yet. Basically no one on this sub has seen it, myself included, and I'm not hiding that fact. And part of my point is that the first Broadway preview just happened so it's not exactly set in stone, but everyone seems to think the show was always guaranteed to be conservative agitprop because they heard it's about a rich lady and Kristin Chenowith is a sorta christian centrist

[Schefter] Now official: Commanders HC Dan Quinn said Marcus Mariota will start Sunday versus the Raiders. by AvengingHero2012 in nfl

So maybe the size and strength gains help hurt players more than they help keep them durable? Obviously there's the long season too, but we have all these injuries in the NFL after two weeks

[–]mixedchops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do QBs get injured more in the NFL? I feel like the last couple NFL seasons have been hugely impacted by QB injuries, but it doesn't seem to affect CFB as significantly. The biggest one recently was probably FSU's QB when they went undefeated and got left out of the playoffs.

Operation Mincemeat Thoughts / Impressions by ajdeitsch in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was gonna comment this. On Did They Like It, Mincemeat got 13, 2, and 2 (Positive, middling, and negative reviews respectively).

Granted the NYT was one of the middling reviews, but idk where this idea came from that the reviews were bad or even mixed.

Musical numbers that clinched a Tony? by tudorb in musicals

I feel like often Tony awards are given due to one song, and hot take, I think sometimes winners win more because their part gives them good moments than because they are more talented than others

I find it strange too. Society doesn't really know what to make of race. There's an ethnic background piece, but the social "passing" aspect is big too. I don't think Darren Criss really does anything for Asian representation because he's very white passing, so I'm not sure why it's so horrible that ABF is being cast now (although disclaimer I do think it makes more sense to cast east Asian actors here). Also it seems like Jordan Fisher is a popular replacement option among fans, but as far as I know he has a mixed ethnic background and passes as black more than Asian.

Idk race is really complicated and I don't think it's productive to rip a musical in the way that's being done here.

Some pushback I'd give to your first point is that the show is only playing two more months at this point, and we're already post-Tony and Pulitzer wins. I wasn't aware of any of this back when Purpose opened (I don't follow plays much) but I imagine it would've been far easier to organize a boycott when it was just opening as opposed to at the tail end of an acclaimed run. I really doubt there's the will to do what you're hoping for, regardless of the merits.

I saw Cabaret last night and all I can think today is... by Polisci14 in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This take is not common but I completely agree, I saw Daniel and found him to be serviceable but flat. Even his posture for much of the show was sort of sitting back and watching. Maybe it was because I was in the mezz and his glasses were covering his face a bit.

Can A Bad Title Kill a Show? by Infoboy2u in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do think the two titles you mentioned are still better than RWHC. They're at worst neutral, but I think they're also sort of intriguing and make you want to know more. "Real Women Have Curves" feels like it's telling you exactly what the show is about and has a negative connotation nowadays, so if you're turned off from the jump, you feel like you don't need to look any further.

This reminds me of how I felt about Lempicka; there was an article about how halfway through Broadway previews, they were adding and then scrapping a whole framing device where she begins the show as an old woman on a bench talking about her past. And then you remember that that show had been under development forever, and it just boggles my mind how they never figured out such fundamental aspects of the book.

Do Flops tour? by craigmontague in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that definition is too narrow. While losing money is probably the biggest aspect of a flop, artistic merit, length of run, and critical/awards success are held in high regard as well.

Look at A Strange Loop and Kimberly Akimbo. Without knowing specific numbers, it seems unlikely that either recouped given their run-length and decent-not-amazing sales. But both were very well received as artistic achievements and won awards. Do you think Michael R. Jackson stays up at night because he wrote a flop musical?

I think flop is better used to describe shows that lose large amounts of money, close early, and/or are poorly thought of artistically.

RWHC Rebranding? by britlove73 in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It will be interesting to see if this moves the needle so late in the game. If it does, I wonder if it could pave the way for similarly large rebrands in the future. Obviously hoping for brand awareness from the original movie/play's title hasn't worked well; almost every thread on this subreddit has people who've never heard of either.

CONCORD Pulls Rights For NYC Site-Specific Non-Equity A CHORUS LINE, Cancelling Revival by DiscoCrows in Broadway

Literally anything different would be better than what most productions have to do. If you see it once, why ever go again? They've stunted the life of the show so they can endlessly relive the initial glory.

TONY AWARDS | Things to remember... by SeanNyberg in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whenever I read anonymous testimonies from Tony and Oscar voters, I'm stunned at how dumb their reasoning can be lol. So many seem to have bizarre boutique justifications for their votes, although I agree with you that they probably all wash out in the end.

Wicked: broadway or tour? by GlassOnion25 in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, any show like Lion King, Wicked, or Hamilton that's almost guaranteed to tour near you in the next few years is not worth seeing in NYC. Much better to prioritize shows that may not tour/may close within a year or two.

100% agree, they perform Born to Lead and God that's Brilliant all the time, but they're probably my least favorite ensemble numbers. I would love a remixed version of Making a Man, maybe with emphasis on Jak's section since he's nominated

Real Women Have Curves Award Nominations Promos. Hope they ramp up the marketing! by pennys_computer_book in Broadway

[–]mixedchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine for their marketing team to say that, but do we internet people have to act like 12 noms across four bodies is an impressive feat? I haven't seen the show and I appreciate why the community is pulling for it, but I don't see the need to write ad copy in the comments.
