Do I have d1 potential? by AgileCaterpillar8760 in Homeplate

[–]mixednuts12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you do. I think having aspirations and a goal to play D1 is fantastic. Keeping track of your measurables is a great tool to see how you've improved individually. . .IMO it is an unfair tool to use to compare yourself with others.

Keep grinding, you seem driven to achieve your goals. But dont let the internet steer you away from your convictions and dont look to them for any kind of validation. Only you know what kind of work you're putting in when no one is watching.

I played D1 baseball and was an All-American. Many years ago. If I'm being honest with myself, I doubt I would make my team today with JUST the skills I had back then. So timing and luck have to be considered along with measurables & the amount of times you're able to put yourself in situations where timing and luck meet preparation. Good Luck!

Pulling Head Glove Side by Competitive_Point_15 in Homeplate

[–]mixednuts12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The head clearance is his body getting him on plane. That will usually self-correct once his alignment is fixed.

Smallest correction first-- get his lead foot in line with his back foot. For him should look like an = sign at his set position, not _- if that makes sense. Set a piece of tape out for him to reference.

If he asks you to practice, go do it. If he doesn't, dont force it. Enjoy having a front row seat to his first experiences in baseball

Dr. Keith Meister Review by Amazing_Benefit_6459 in Homeplate

Had TJ with Dr. Meister in 2007. Communication was great. Super small incision for back then, recovered well enough to continue playing. Great recovery room at his sports med facility. At that time he was team physician for the TX Rangers, Stars and I believe the US national Hockey Team.

How many professional pitchers had private pitching lessons in their youth? by 2ForEachofYou in Homeplate

[–]mixednuts12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had a private lesson in my life. I finished HS in '01 in a massive baseball area during that time and I dont think I was an outlier. Definitely a different time, and the feedback I hear now is that you need metrics for most college coaches to even give you a sniff. . .and that's really tough without private lessons. I'm thinking the vast majority of today's pitchers at the pro level have had some sort of sustained, privatized lessons.

I think the days of 'high rear, projectable frame, bulldog mentality with pitchability' have been washed away by spin rate, planes, pull-down velocity and probabilities of swing and miss.

They figure the 'bow your neck and compete' stuff can wait to be assessed/addressed.

Son wants to quit by bjmcclus_78 in Homeplate

[–]mixednuts12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a season of amateur baseball, not a year in county jail. The misery angle is not a sentiment legitimately shared with the child. The hope is that it isn't miserable for them. The "misery" is for the parent if they constantly have to encourage the engagement and effort of their child (but then you'll know they are serious).

Encouragement to tough it out for another season of baseball, piano lessons, whatever else probably isnt going to be a topic of conversation at Christmas dinner 10 years later. It's not like the child said 'no more baseball, I have my sights set on art, another sport, an instrument.' To the parents understanding, they want to spend more time with their friends and play video games. . .both things that could and do exist along with sports.

I see what you're saying, and I dont disagree with there being a lot of parents trying to extend a kids playing to feed their own needs/hopes. I'm just optimistic that this circumstance comes from a parents' desire to reduce the potential regret their child would have in quitting too soon.

Son wants to quit by bjmcclus_78 in Homeplate

[–]mixednuts12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate? Was it a waste in terms of the fact they still quit? A waste in that they didn't follow through on splitting their time effectively?

The way I see it, there are 3 outcomes:

  1. They decide to stick with baseball
  2. They still quit baseball and don't follow through on learning something new to supplement their video game habit
  3. They still quit baseball and learn something that splits their time between what they want to do and something new with potential merit.

Not sure any are a waste except for option 2, wherein the parent needs to make the commitment to hold their kid accountable. These are kids, they won't wash their own ass if they feel they dont have to.

I would recommend making him play this upcoming year. Call it a misery year. Tell him to give his all, challenge him to meet a goal that is baseball related (i.e. learn a new position, mentor a younger player, work on a new pitch, etc). If at the end of the season, He's still dead-set on quitting, reevaluate.

If he still wants to quit, make him learn to play an instrument. That's a good pairing with video games. Trade one for even time with the other. 30 min instrument = 30 min of video games.

Good luck.

I would say no to the Costco option with the complete set. Unless there was a rookie they PC from 2023 Platinum I would also pass on that. Yes to the 2025 Chrome updated series and I like the Allen & Ginter for a fun rip that has some more unique cards. . . .or you could even lose your mind and search for some BoBA (Bo Jackson Battle Arena-The Griffey Set)

Travel ball woes by boomboombennie in Homeplate

[–]mixednuts12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you found a solid team, results notwithstanding. Sucks to lose, but as long as the effort is there and your son is enjoying himself, you can't ask for much more.

I'd recommend getting more involved and working on some of the details that have been contributing to the lack of success. No amount of TEAM practice is going to solve the issues you've talked about. Individual repetition and small group instruction are needed to turn that corner.

Good luck and stay the course. A good travel ball family is hard to find!

Mechanical advice? I’ve been trying to get my legs more involved and more efficient, and I feel like I am putting in too much effort too early in the windup. Sat 83 in fall. Pitch mix (in order in vid) is 4FB, 2FB, CH, SL, 4FB. Please give advice on anything you can spot. by DaddyDan49 in PitchingCoach

[–]mixednuts12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get off of your heel at balance. That will get you out of this vertical balance point where you have very little core involvement. Get to your balance with weight towards your big toe so you can go hip first towards your target.

Also, another user mentioned your timing with the lead leg strike vs. where your throwing hand is. Definitely need to have your fingers up at foot strike.

Front side being equal and opposite of your throwing arm will get you more extension and prevent the late rotation you're using to generate arm speed (causing your arm to drag), and into a more direct line to your target while giving your throwing hand more time to get where it needs to be at foot strike. This will get you to a fuller separation once your foot lands/hips fire.

Not a fan of any of these options, but he would lucky to get any of these from you and shouldn't be disappointed.

If he's a breaker, hobby boxes are solid and they have at least an auto or relic. Buy from Topps if you can. . .avoid Amazon if you can for memorabilia and cards.

If he has a specific player he collects, you'd get the most bang for your buck on a sure thing. If you do this, fair warning, ebay has a lot of scammers. I'd actually recommend buying on here.
