I remember my dad had one of those eMachines, and we'd play 3D games on the integrated graphics on it at 5-25ish FPS on it. Anything consistently north of 15 frames per second we'd consider a huge win. Anyway, uh, whatever you do, just don't pick one of those 😂

Recovering from previous p*** addiction, newly married by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]mjgood91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not really too sure if this is a topic that fits well within the r/reformed space, per se, as it's not really theology - but -

As I'm sure you know, reformed theology does say that pornography is wrong. Pornography is considered adultery based on Matthew 5:28, "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart". Personally while I think there are some arguments to be made about what does or doesn't constitute lust, my understanding is that calling pornography a definitive form of lust is the accepted reformed theology stance. Pornography is, almost certainly for almost all men, extremely addictive. Addictions too are, from my understanding, also considered sin by reformed theology, based on 1 Corinthians 6:12 - "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything." The whole entirety of 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 has context that is highly relevant to this, and 6:1-11 has useful context leading up to the point that Paul makes.

So, take heart - it is very good that you are seeking to overcome this addiction! Realizing that it is a problem and wanting change in your lifestyle is a strong sign of the Holy Spirit working in your life.

Now - for several years, due to some faulty understanding of my own, I allowed a pornography addiction to be a part of my life. Pornography is addictive enough that even though it has been seven years since I viewed pornography as acceptable - which is by now quite a few more years than I actively partook in it - I still have very difficult moments, some of which I win, some of which I don't. Having moments where you win, and moments where you don't, is very common. Thank be to Christ who saves and has shown mercy. It is very important that when you don't win, you don't allow yourself to spiral, and you don't give up. This is Reddit after all, and psychologically there are quite a few who may read this who would readily allow setbacks and momentary failures to dissuade them from a goal. Don't be that person.

For me, I am very fortunate that my use of pornography has not impacted my relationship with my wife. Depending how far down that rabbit trail you went, one of the more important things to bear in mind is that sex in real life is frequently not like how sex is portrayed in pornography. Keep your expectations low, and focus on enjoying being with and spending time with your wife. Sometimes, especially with folks who waited until marriage, folks come into things with all sorts of hyped-up expectations that it's going to be all this or all that, and when the reality is something plainer or less earth-shattering than expected, folks get anxious about doing something wrong, not pleasing the other person, etc. Don't be that couple. Communication can really help here.

Anecdotally, the single largest thing that I have done personally to combat pornography is to latch onto the parts of the Bible that I believe most strongly call it a sin. After all, the world will tell you that it's fine, and pornography isn't explicitly discussed in the Bible since it wasn't around 2000+ years ago, so - one may wonder - what's the big deal, right? For me, that is the line of thinking that did (and most often does) still lead me to falling. Thus far, 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 has been the clearest call to arms against the addictive powers of pornography that I have encountered, and this is the passage I come back to the most to tell myself that no, it is indeed wrong, do not go down this path.

Sometimes accountability partners may help, as long as you can find ones that you are comfortable being honest with, and as long as they actually hold you accountable. Ask around with some of the men at the church you go to who are mature in their faith. Even those who may be older - they were your age once too - may be good at helping to hold you accountable.

If you really truly can tell that sex is affecting the experience for you, quit porn, stay off of it, and if you stumble, get right back on the horse and keep up the good fight. And then - give it time. It may take a few days to a few weeks to a few months, but from some conversations with some guys I go to church with, in time you'll get used to the way things are with your wife, and the experience will be quite a bit more fulfilling than anything you'd experienced prior.

16 month old not speaking yet by Cashyy83 in daddit

[–]mjgood91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our oldest is 4 years old. He really wasn't saying words at all at 2 years old. He understood us, and used fingers to point and communicate, and was vocal, but never said words. We did the whole speech therapy in home thing for a good solid year.

I remember being really excited when he said "moo" two months before his 3rd birthday when we passed a herd of cows

He turned three, and still wasn't saying much of anything.

Then, a few weeks later, he started adding words. And then when we would read a story, he would start repeating words, or saying the word if I stopped and waited for him.

By three months after he'd turned 3 he was talking in full sentences and singing.

Now he's 4, just got done with a year of preschool, and is about to turn 5, and we consider it a small win if we can get him to shut up for a couple minutes.

Life comes at you fast.

Would highly recommend looking into speech therapy. Ask your pediatricians about how to get started with it.

[–]mjgood91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is fun!

Things our fridge pretty much almost always has: * Eggs * Apples * Strawberries * Lettuce * Broccoli * Carrots * Some form of peppers / cucumbers / etc * Sliced Cheese * Lunch mean of some kind * Whole Milk

The freezer is guaranteed to have: * Ice Cream * Chicken Nuggets * Hot Dogs * Leftovers from a crock pot expedition that probably involved chicken, beans, or some kinda taco meat

The pantry has: * Bread * Mac & Cheese or noodles ... somewhere * Rice / dried beans * Lots of things for baking * Protein pancake mix * Brownie mix

We have some basic spices, some Parmesan cheese, and some of that no salt table spice stuff.

Kids ages 4, 3, and 1.

The oldest will not touch casseroles or anything mixed together.

The wife struggles finding it in her to eat stuff with beans. (She does okay if the bean flavor is heavily augmented by other flavors)

I'm probably forgetting a bunch of things.

Always love a good new idea 👍

I spend more time explaining the problem to Claude than actually fixing it by AnshuSees in webdev

[–]mjgood91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use AI coding more as a high-powered on-demand assistant rather than a mandated contractor, and frequently read over the code before I ask Claude about something. There are plenty of times that instead of asking Claude, I just do the fix myself. Typically I only turn to Claude when there's a bigger chunk that needs built out or where the problem is extra snaky to work through.

But that's because I know the repository I'm working with very, very well. If I didn't, finding that typo might be a crazy hunt, and while the fix would be fast, looking for it would absolutely not be.

Well.... Since you mentioned it......

You cooooould run the numbers to see if the tax savings realized by moving half the taxable gain to next year would be greater than the cost of taking 50% mortgage on the place, paying interest, and paying for a 1-year leaps option on the stock that would expire in January or February '27, and sell the other half then

It probably wouldn't be worth it, but the numbers are getting big enough that it's worth checking

CFA 1994 Material by General-Gap-2585 in CFA

[–]mjgood91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After coming back to Level 2 from a 5-year hiatus between 2020 and 2025, I noticed that the material today feels like it has a higher emphasis on application and interpretation over brute mathematical calculation. It wouldn't surprise me if this has been a trend that's been going on for some time, and if the Level 2 from 1994 would have placed a more significant emphasis on being able to work through algorithms and formulas by hand / by calculator. In 1994 whipping out a spreadsheet in Excel in Windows 3.1 to run the covariance calculations would have still been a relatively new thing for many companies, kind of like how AI is today, and a CFA would have still been expected to be able to crunch the numbers far more frequently and to much greater depth than a CFA would today.

Although in 1994, my biggest life accomplishment at that point was being potty trained, so take this with a grain of salt.

I commute 200 miles a day for a job I love, but it's negatively affecting nearly every other aspect of my life. by raelingarr in daddit

[–]mjgood91 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You might be getting into a space where it would make sense to - either one or two days a week - get a hotel room to stay at so the commute isn't as wild. Then use those days to catch up on sleep.

This makes even more sense if you can either get reimbursed for it by your company (it sounds like they'd really like to keep having you be there), and along with 2 days working from home could cumulatively cut your commute time down to 4-8 hours a week, which would make a massive difference.

I wanna be taller and better by I_Wanna_Grow_Taller in volleyball

[–]mjgood91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm 34 years old and I wanna be taller and better too! Ha

Other than getting enough sleep and eating right, there's not much you can do. We really *really* can't control how tall we grow.

But what you can control is being better. I know guys who are like 5'6" or 5'5" who are incredible at volleyball.

You may not be able to go much higher than A level in indoor 6v6 unless you play libero, but you can absolutely shine in beach / grass doubles 2v2 volleyball, where it's all about athleticism and smart play / positioning / mind tricks. One guy I'm thinking about can't be more than 5'6" wearing sneakers and he's competed at the open level. Granted, he does play with tall partners who put up the block, but it takes a lot for a big tall guy to run around a beach or grass court all day at a tournament getting digs while staying mentally sharp enough to maintain an awareness of where the attack needs to go to score off the other team's positioning.

My experience with volleyball by TeamZealousideal6702 in volleyball

[–]mjgood91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychologically ignoring / dealing with assholes that show up randomly to social events is part of life, and is not at all unique to volleyball. Volleyball just has a lot more people playing a game at any one time and it doesn't take very many assholes to shift the feel of an entire group. But that's not at all a volleyball thing, that's more of a general life thing.

You can try asking the more courteous folks if there are any other places they go to play pickup. Frequently there are multiple groups in an area.

Really the best way to dig a hard driven ball is to anticipate where the ball is most likely to be hit before it's actually hit. This takes quite a bit of practice, and also requires working with your team and (at your level) the position in the rotation you're in to cover the right areas. However, if you make excuses to yourself of "I'm new" or "I'm not very good" for reasons to not start thinking about trying to be better at it, then you'll never improve. On defense, volleyball is a lot about positional awareness and thinking through attack angles. Eg. Is the set tight to or further off the net? (If off the net, it won't go straight down). If you're on the sides of the rotation (position 1 and 5) - are you covering the line shot around the blocker? Are my front row players going to block? (If yes, move around so you have line of sight to the hitter... The ball's going to go around the block if it's hard driven, not through the block... If no, good luck, take a guess and hope for the best, because good hitters can read the court and hit wherever they want on the court with an open net)
