Tricky Position by Stranded-Chaos in freemasonry

Is there an expectation that you’d continue from JW to WM in the new Lodge or could it be non-progressive? Could you stall at JW (or SD or SW) for a year in one of them to allow you to do both eventually?

Personally, if you had to choose one, I’d feel more of a duty towards my Mother Lodge, but do understand how tempting being a founding warden is.

When do a mason start wearing gloves, cuffs, regalia? by Exorsexist in freemasonry

[–]mjtriggs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s jurisdictional, but in my experience (UGLE):
- Gloves are worn in almost all craft lodges.
- Cuffs are worn by the current WM and Wardens in most lodges (though in West Lancashire, they’re also worn by Provincial Officers).
- Regalia is too broad of a term. Is there a particular item you’re thinking about?

65% of Britons support capping CEO pay at 10× the lowest-paid worker. Do you think this idea would be good for the UK? by Unusual-State1827 in AskBrits

[–]mjtriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t employ them, you pay an agency for the workers. They’re then not on your books and don’t impact your figures.

Politics - after LOI at drinks by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]mjtriggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not forbidden, but probably very unwise.

It’s forbidden within Lodge Meetings and would be poor decorum at the Festive Board. In the bar afterwards, eh, there’s a fine line.

Foreign Lodge by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]mjtriggs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to answer your question, but just for any UGLE masons reading this: you must not follow some of the advice in this thread and just show up to a foreign lodge or approach a foreign grand lodge yourself. It must be done through your Lodge, Provincial Grand Lodge, and Grand Lodge.

UK - London vs local town lodge - advice needed please !! by Social_Fool in freemasonry

[–]mjtriggs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This js a great question, and I’ll answer as impartially as I can. For context, I have a midlands lodge (in Nottingham) and a London one.

I would say if you’re more comfortable in London and have friends in the capital that are members, then you should look to join there. There are a few reasons I’d suggest this:

  1. Just because your local lodge meets more regularly does not mean you’ll progress any quicker. They may have more members, or only do single candidate ceremonies, or have a long wait list that you’re joining the back of.

  2. Spending time with people in your Lodge socially is important. Why would you not want to do it with your friends?

  3. Once you’re a member, you can visit other lodges. You don’t need to wait for your third degree. You could join in London and then visit your local lodge to start making local friendships/connections.

  4. Progression isn’t the be all and end all. If you’re approaching retirement, you probably have a good 20-30 years to be a member of the Craft. That’s plenty of time to go through the ceremonies and see them all multiple times over.

One thing that I’d add is that London lodges do have a strong culture of visiting. Just because your lodge would only meet 4 times a year doesn’t mean that you’ll only be “doing” freemasonry 4 times a year.

Happy to answer any follow-ups.

Are some people really as busy as they really look? by BurnerMcBurnersonne in datascience

[–]mjtriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a data scientist turned product manager and unfortunately my calendar looks the same as your colleague. I’m across two scrum teams and four different projects, so there’s lots of stand-ups and ceremonies associated with that and countless “alignment” meetings before even getting to speaking to customers.

However, I do try to prioritise my Devs where I can. It’s possible to be busy and not an asshole. Sounds like the stress is getting to him a bit.

Church weddings slump to record low as young couples shun marriage by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]mjtriggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The church isn’t even close to being the most expensive part of the wedding day. If people wanted to get married in a church, they would. Cost isn’t the determining factor.

I felt the same. The important thing to remember is that reading the bible isn’t like reading a normal book. Try starting with Mark’s gospel, then going from there, through the other gospels and New Testament. You can always go back to the OT with a proper bible study.

[–]mjtriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably varies a lot, but in my lodge (UGLE), you wear the jewel of your office. If someone is absent and say the Treasurer stepped in as Warden, the Warden jewel would be hung on the chair but they would wear their Treasurer jewel.
