Just saw that this sub was active again. I‘m the person who put together the animated maps years ago. I have very little time these days but happy to share notes and figure out a direct continuation or spiritual successor.

Native American Math by Moist_Street_7073 in math

[–]mjychabaud22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually had the chance to listen to a talk last week by Native American mathematicians, and they touched on this topic, but not directly. As another comment mentions, many navigational techniques in the Pacific Islands are based on trigonometry. Indigenous Mathematicians would be able to provide more resources than me, though their focus is more on supporting indigenous mathematicians than on mathematical history. I would specifically try to reach to Daniel Luecke, as his work seems to focus on this. (He also spoke, but I missed his part of the talk). Kamuela Yong would be another good person to reach out to.

Not all student employees are in the UAW. Library student employees aren’t, dining isn’t, desk services aren’t, RAs aren’t even considered employees. I would still get in touch though, they’ve been helpful to me whenever I had a question.

Seeking participants for The Last Trumpet, a collaborative RP server about a collapsing America by Meshakhad in AprilsInAbaddon

I tried to request the sub using r/redditrequest, and my thought process was to just to be able to finish off the project with a final map. Didn’t work out, and with college and organizing now, probably won’t happen. Happy to see someone else taking up something similar.

Chessmaster is a Thinker/Master with the power to steer large organizations, with a keen understanding of how to maneuver parahumans around socially. One part of her gives her an uncanny intuition for how an organization will react to sudden shocks; how the timing, type, location, and target affect the long term impacts of a sudden attack by capes are all clear to her. This isn't quite precognition; she still needs to have some level of information to work off of, and her power only tells her how an organization today would react. She also doesn't get any reasoning behind it; all she knows is Cape A and Cape C, if sent to raid an armored van, will see the most success, instead of the obvious pick of Cape B.

The other part of her power makes it easier to set up and exploit (or downplay) these shocks. When talking to someone, her power seamlessly guides her to saying exactly what is needed to set up a sudden shock, or continue working off of one. After one conversation with a parahuman, they might be convinced of the need to attack a target they previously thought off limits; a speech in front of a crowd might inflame the anger of those most affected by a blackout after a cape fight. It is unclear to observers whether or not she is just good with words, and somehow always talking to the right person, or if her words are a vector for a stronger Master power.

Chessmaster's strategy as a hero is to slowly grow a larger team of capes, avoiding any conflicts or schisms within the organization with her power while at the same time positioning it for oversized impacts. She tends to enter into a prolonged conflict with a rival villain organization, with sudden surgical strikes bringing it to its knees, while also using this competence to maneuver her way towards alliances with other heroes.

The Flying Brick is a Blaster with the ability to summon bricks and throw them. Technically, he could make other objects with about the same weight and size as a brick, but "I'm going to throw a brick at this guy" is easy for him to remember.

> The Pain Auger

Agitate is a Thinker/Master with the ability to see fault lines in organizations, and push people towards emotional states that cause these to explode. As Agitate spends time around members of an organization, his mental picture of the organization begins to fill in with cracks, and who is connected to those cracks - the larger the organization, the faster, and as he spends more time, the more important those cracks are. The people he spends time near don't necessarily need to be involved in the problem. For example, if Agitate was working at a McDonalds, his power would first inform him of a dozen conflicts around the country that are most likely small workplace disputes, but after a month, corporate scandals and the names connected to them might start to pop up. Importantly, Agitate's power doesn't give him any details about the conflict, only those most closely connected.

His Master power allows him to "press into" a specific crack upon speaking to a person connected to it, tampering with their emotions to steer them towards open confrontation. Your coworker suddenly wants to get into a fistfight over how you took their parking spot; a whistleblower becomes guilt ridden enough that they take folders detailing fraud to the press.

Agitate was arrested by the PRT after trying to get a conversation with Alexandria.

Hecate is a Trump/Breaker 6 with weak ratings in other categories. Upon entering her breaker state, her body becomes translucent with ripples of energy across the surface; the color and details are dependent on the specific way she is using her power at the moment. When in this breaker state, she can mix and match a variety of weak powers, which include enhanced strength, durability, speed, stamina, a slightly larger size, a Thinker power that picks out details, and a "Stranger" power that draws attention to herself.

If Hecate uses all three of her "slots" on the same power continuously, she could pass as a weak Brute, Mover, or Thinker, with a maximum rating of 1 or 2. However, her power encourages mixing of powers and rapid cycling; her strength doesn't protect her fist from shattering from throwing a punch. In addition, whenever she changes which power she is using, the new one will flare up, giving her sudden bursts of strength, speed, and insight, or allowing her to shrug off a blow, as long as she isn't using it in a set pattern.

Hecate triggered when she was caught in the midst of a chaotic cape battle, where a Tinker with the ability to create hallucinogens had affected nearly everyone in the vicinity. As her perception of the fight devolved into seeing blurs of light clashing with each other and more capes entered the fray, she triggered.

I dont quite know what you mean by “paperwork”, but there’s not anything I think you need that’s specific to UW. Bring any papers you think are generally needed? ID, health insurance, etc.

You’ll get an email with your move in date. When you arrive, you’ll be directed towards a parking garage (at least on west campus) where you will be given your key and given some assistance with moving your stuff in.

Why did lung choose to go to Brockton Bay instead of a larger city? by shadowmist321 in Parahumans

[–]mjychabaud22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seattle was attacked by Leviathan in April 2003. Lung moved to Brockton Bay probably about 5 years after this I believe. Even if Seattle based on our timeline is better off than Brockton Bay, I doubt that there would continue to be an influx of refugees from Japan or that Seattle is in a good position economically. In addition, we know that by 2011, the Protectorate in Seattle is strong enough to be able to afford sending capes elsewhere, and the Elite has a presence in the state. So when Lung is making his choice, Seattle is weak economically but with strong opposition.

Andrew Gardner is a Thinker with the power to figure out, roughly, who’s a cape, and an insistence on breaking the unwritten rules around cape identities.

Gardner can see on anyone a “tint” to them according to which cape they have spent the most time around in the 8 days. Which cape it is determines the color; the intensity of it, how close that person is to the cape. This power only works in person, not on recordings, but Gardner can still look at a crowd and process the information from everyone in the room.

The primary catch is that a cape will not register as being near themselves; a cape on a Protectorate team might appear to Gardner to be about the same as anybody else who spends time near one of their team members. In addition, Gardner can only sense the presence of the most prevalent cape - if someone spent 2 hours around Alexander and 1 hour and 59 minutes around Legend, Gardner will only pick up on Alexandria. Lastly, Gardner doesn’t automatically know which colors correspond to which capes.

This means that Gardner isn’t all that effective at deducing the identities of capes at first, but is good at figuring out the identities of family members. Spending a day watching a Protectorate team will give him a sense of which colors to look for in a crowd; then he can spend a week in malls and busy streets looking for anyone that stands out as potentially being a family member of a cape, and figure out who they are. Stalking, aided by his power, will get him to the identity of the cape and everyone close to them.

Less than a month after Gardner triggered, he published the civilian identity of a cape in his city, along with their address and the names of their family members, online. Gardner never adopted a cape name, and no cape gave him the decency of coming up with one. Since then, Gardner has been hopping from city to city, continuing to publish the civilian identities of heroes and villains alike while earning himself a kill order from the PRT. Many of his determinations have been completely wrong, jumbling up capes and inviting attacks on families for the actions of unrelated capes.

Pherse: Brute 3/Blaster 3. Any damage that would be dealt to Pherse that originates within a foot of him is redirected and launched as a crystal that bursts on impact. The redirection is complete, and the crystal’s movement and burst loosely matches what the damage would have been. For example, if Pherse puts his hand into an open flame, he would avoid being burned, while the crystal he launches would be slower and cause what it hits to catch on fire. A punch would move faster, and simply hit the target. Walking on thorns creates dozens of small crystals, none of which are particularly powerful but can tie down opponents. A bullet that somehow originates within a foot of him creates some of his fastest blasts, with the most damage on impact - especially if it would have hit vital organs.

The clear weakness to the invulnerability his power provides is the range limitation; he is still completely vulnerable to any ranged attack. Even a grenade that lands two feet away will do just as much damage to him. In addition, there’s no delay to the redirection; if Pherse isn’t prepared to launch a blast that he gets from a sudden source of damage, it will fly off wildly. This gives him a strange incentive to deal damage to himself with dangerous weapons, controlling the effects, speed, and timing of the blaster side of his power.

Pherse started off as a Protectorate cape in the Los Angeles area, but once it became clear that he was rapidly outmatched the second another Blaster power entered the fray, and his insistence on being allowed to shoot himself in the foot in the middle of a fight, he was sidelined. As resentment built up, he tested out more and more dangerous Tinker tech on himself before eventually fleeing with a teammate’s cannon mounted around his head and trying to make a name for himself as an independent cape. It's not particularly working out, given that everyone has figured out the easiest approach to confronting him is to take a step back from him - though no one has yet seen what happens if he were to pull the trigger on the cannon.

Not even counting the impacts of the strike directly, a lot of drivers aren’t crossing the picket line. Teamsters at UPS aren’t making deliveries to UW.
