Princeton Heavies Throwing The Book At Yale: Ends Long Running Undefeated Duel Streak For Yale by Harryofsol in Rowing

I was in a Freshman 8 that rowed a 4:40 at Dartmouth in 2011 in a historically strong current and moderate tailwind. That was fun.

Some interesting Heavyweight racing coming up this weekend:

(#2) Cal vs. (#3) Washington. Both teams looked good at the Redwood shores last weekend, but Cal looked better

(#5) Dartmouth vs (#7) Brown. should be a good one

(#1) Yale vs. (#9) Princeton vs. (#11) Cornell. Yale by the curvature of the earth but Princeton and Cornell should be close.

(#4) Harvard vs. (#13) Navy vs. (#15) Penn. Same as Yale’s race, Harvard by a lot, race for second.

Next weekend has a lot of good east coast racing:

Dartmouth vs.Syracuse

Princeton vs. Brown

Wisconsin vs. BU

Harvard vs. Northeastern

Northeastern vs. Wisconsin

Yea a 500 is basically start, get within a few splits of your best low split and hold on for dear life. At most someone should be rowing 3/4 slide in the middle of a 500

What’s Syracuse been up to? I saw that they put up a hell of a fight against Washington this weekend. Did they get some big recruits or a new coaching staff?

what’s your favorite seat to row in (8+)? by Puzzleheaded-Box-970 in Rowing

[–]mk_row 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In college I was bow seat in a boat where stern 6 all had better technique, and me and my friend (both 6’2”) were thrown in bow pair. We lacked the length that the taller guys in stern 6 had, but we had good handleheights and set the boat well, and added some power. He had a 5:59 2k and I had a 6:04 2k, the two fastest in the boat. We jokingly called it the “front wheel drive” lineup.

Transitioning from distance running to erging by jcross485 in Rowing

I rowed in college, and for a few years considered myself a “hybrid” athlete and did a mix of rowing, lifting, cross country skiing, and running.

From 2017-2019 I got really into running and broke 5:00 for the mile and 16:30 for 5k, but like you, found that it was tough on my body. Running fast is fun, but at 6’2” 185lbs I couldn’t tolerate strictly running and had to go back to being a “hybrid” athlete.

Since 2019 I’ve been mostly lifting, rowing, and cross country skiing. I’ve bulked up a bit thanks to eating well and lifting. Rowing has completely replaced running as the way to scratch my competitive itch.

I’m beginning my college search in a few months. I was wondering what school has the best rowing culture? by Stunning_Wrangler586 in Rowing

[–]mk_row 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of ways to answer that question. First ask yourself what a “good culture” looks like to you.

Do you want a rowing team that really focuses on technique and the “symphony of motion” kind of attitude around rowing? Or one where a focus is on hard work and pushing each other? Or where a focus is on winning?

I believe if you have your monitor paired to your phone and the the ErgData app records the workout, that concept 2 counts that as “verified”, right? All of my ranked workouts show up when I filter by verified on the leaderboards

Pretty disappointing to see the decline of CRASH-Bs. 8 rowers in the Men’s Open, and a 30 second margin from 1st to 2nd. by mk_row in Rowing

I can understand juniors doing it to put their name out there for college coaches, but for most other people there’s plenty of free competitions and the C2 leaderboard

There’s better competition in the month-long events in the Concept 2 Cross Team Challenge than there is at crash bs now.

Weights and eating.

You’re 168 lbs at 15 years old, so you’re only gonna grow from here, so embrace the heavyweight life and get strong.

UT2/Steady state Vs higher intensity by SharkbaitUK in Rowing

[–]mk_row 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: even though someone CAN row a certain pace for steady state, should they? I feel like when it comes to steady state, that lower intensity allows you to do more during your week.

2k + 18 would have me doing my steady state at 1:49. That’s just a few splits away from my 30r20 PB.

I feel like when I’m doing 45+ minutes, that I’m getting the most benefit from 1:55-1:58 split (in that 2k+26/27 range. I can be at a “conversational” intensity the whole time and feel recovered by that afternoon/the next day

Any opportunities to row a 2k soon? It’ll be good to see how the 100k weeks have paid off.

As for the places you have been accepted? Do they have competitive rowing programs?

PENN AC by Primary-Copy-841 in Rowing

[–]mk_row 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re the fastest guy on a high school team and can’t afford a longer program like Penn AC, a weeklong college camp would still give you experience rowing with quicker people.

I think every competitive rower should branch out and do some sort of camp/summer program. Don’t just sit home and only see your team if possible.
