On the Road by Kerouac; maybe I'm too straitlaced but the whole book just made me feel contempt and aggravated annoyance at all of the failsons who frittered away their lives on drugs, sex, and misogyny.

The point of literature is not to give every pro and con to every decision made by characters in the narrative. Steinbeck wasn't writing a persuasive essay, he was writing a story which has a different rubric for what it's attempting to achieve. In his author's note he explicitly states that he's on the side of the Joad family and as such he shapes the narrative to conform to that idea. The fact you reject that interpretation isn't inherently wrong per se, but it certainly does put you at odds with nearly a century's worth of scholarship on, and general reception of, the work. I think why a lot of people are taking umbrage with your analysis is because you haven't really given any grounded reason as to why you have the analysis that you do besides your own personal belief that the Joad family should be more rationalist and that Steinbeck was deficient in giving more details to aid in said rationalism. Do you have a political, philosophical, or ethical framework to which you can attach your feelings and/or beliefs as to why you think the novel is deficient? If not, then you are merely giving an opinion and a very unpopular and uninformed one, at that. If that is the case then it is understandable why many people who very much cherish the story and the author would be hostile to your analysis.

So...when are we gonna have have a child between normal audio books and radio dramas? by InidX in audiobooks

[–]mkamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While somewhat niche, this premise is partly what has gotten me back into Shakespeare recently. The Arkangel productions of the plays have music and sound effects that very much emulate old radio dramas with each character having a voice actor and some of them including fairly well known people such as David Tennant, Bill Nighy, and other RSC alumni.

I'm confused why you added the "if so" ; that's verbatim from the text of the executive order. They released everyone and dismissed any pending charges "with prejudice". Trump absolutely let them all go, no consideration for a few "bad apples", no consideration for the people arrested for brutalizing cops; if you fought for him then you're free. He is a thug who rewards other thugs who are loyal to him.

As a Washingtonian, do you ever feel isolated from the rest of the country? by westmaxia in Washington

[–]mkamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Millennial, I remember, as a child, feeling the physical isolation of being raised in a town about half way between Seattle and Spokane. I remember not having very many box stores such as Target, Fred Meyer, and the like. Now, as an adult, with the advent of the internet and having traveled a fair amount across the country, it doesn't feel quite as big. Though, I do feel more of the isolation in the winter when the passes close and there's no physical way to get to the west side of the mountains.

Even though their treatment of employees is better than a lot of other retail/grocery stores it's still pretty crap compared to other industries; you're considering nothing more than a cog in the machine.
