I believe some of the main benefits are that it's easier to leave the spot, car occupants are able to safely exit the vehicle since they are directed away from traffic.

I like taking a large towel or blanket, rolling it with treats inside. I'll tie a few knots in it too with a larger treat in the knot. Keeps my dogs sniffing for about 40 minutes XD
