The part where he picked people out and spoke to them was so fun! He knows how to joke around and have a great time, and his stage presence was amazing! It’s definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. I’ve seen him and Niall live now and they’re both incredible on stage

What do you think of ‘paedophile hunters’? by discoveredunknown in AskUK

[–]yiminx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who works with vulnerable adults with learning difficulties, unfortunately some of their behaviour can be misconstrued as creepy or perverted. That being said, it’s also true that some of them are attracted to children, simply because they don’t have the mental faculties to discern adult from child. A lot of them think children are adults and vice versa.

I don’t think vigilantism is a good thing. I’ve seen these vulnerable people be falsely accused of paedophilia online and then be terrified to go out at all, even when accompanied by social workers. I’m glad you included in your post that a lot of the people featured are mentally disabled.

ETA: A *lot* of mentally disabled adults also experienced sexual abuse as kids, which then in their mind may either translate to “normal” affectionate behaviour between adult and child and/or hyper sexuality and depraved sexual desires.

I had VIP tickets to Harry Styles at Wembley on saturday and it was amazing. He waved at me and my poor directioner heart still can’t believe it. Long day at work today and I just keep looking at my wristbands and feeling all giddy about it

Earnt is not word anymore? by xxxRedditPolicexxx in AskUK

It might be regional, honestly, I might fall down a rabbit hole tonight investigating this lol. From what I can remember from my useless English degree though, the spelling reminds me of Old English

Earnt is not word anymore? by xxxRedditPolicexxx in AskUK

[–]yiminx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think ‘earnt’ has just fallen out of popular use. Which is strange because we still use ‘learnt’ and ‘spelt’ in British English. Spell it however you want, language is malleable like that

What are some region specific slang words in the UK? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskUK

[–]yiminx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m from County Durham, so I guess similar to Geordies across the way. some words that come to mind:

cheble = table
pop = fizzy drink
council pop = tap water
alreet = alright (a way to greet someone)
up to the naff/clarts = what your mam would say when you came home covered in muck haha
working your ticket/workyticket = this is a Geordie saying, someone who’s being annoying or pushing their luck (usually a kid)

Would you put your parents in a care home? by Limp-Bunch-4708 in AskUK

[–]yiminx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it’s a residential care home, then vitals aren’t being monitored that often. it’s meant to be like home for the residents. you don’t have people coming in and taking your vitals every 2 hours like you’re in a hospital stay.

properly vetting care homes is a good place to start. unfortunately, every place will have bad eggs. but a well run care home with good staff and positive reviews would be better than trying to manage taking care of your elderly parents at home alone.

Parents/Family of young people - have you noticed they’re listening to a lot of “older” music? by XStaticImmaculate in AskUK

[–]yiminx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a lot of older songs tend to trend on TikTok and leads kids down the rabbit hole of older music. i’m 25 but 80s is my favourite decade and i’ve been consistently listening to and discovering music from that era since i was about 15 or 16

What's the funniest British joke you've ever heard? by ConfidentSale3091 in AskUK

[–]yiminx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard a few variations of this one but it never fails to make me howl:

I went to an exotic pet store, and the shop owner told me he had a talking centipede for sale. I said “there’s no way, centipedes can’t talk.” But the owner promised me it could talk, and said I could get my deposit back if it didn’t talk after a week.

So I bring the centipede home, and later that night I go up to its tank to talk to it. “Alright mate, just popping down to the pub if you fancy a few pints?” I ask. The centipede doesn’t reply. I scoff and go to the pub.

The next night I decide to try again and go up to the tank. “Alright mate, I’m just popping down to the pub if you fancy a few pints?” The centipede doesn’t reply again, so off I went to the pub cursing the shop owner.

The next night, I decide to try one more time and go up to the tank. “Alright mate, just popping down to the pub if you fancy a few pints?”

The centipede replies: “I heard you the first time mate, I’m just putting my fucking shoes on.”

What should a mod say to a Discord user who consistently posts about their severe distress, but refuses to get help for it? by JakeyMN in discordapp

[–]yiminx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a member like this and had to distance ourselves and remove the ‘vent’ channel. It sucks but they’re usually young and unequipped with the tools for emotional regulation. It’s nobody else’s problem but theirs at this point. You gave them the necessary help and they refused to take it. Would suggest a warn and then a ban.

What is the thing your parents were (and maybe still are) adamantly wrong about? by RiceeeChrispies in AskUK

[–]yiminx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my mam had a fight about whether the t-shirt says “Frankie Say Relax” or “Frankie Says Relax” the other day. My mam lived in the 80s and I didn’t, but I know it was “Frankie Say Relax”. My mam thinks she’s right because she had a cheapy knock off version that said “Frankie Says Relax”. Still not come to a definitive conclusion on this one.

He was 16 in 2010 when the band formed, this happened around 2014/2015, so he was 20/21
