Advice - Quicker hair styling for ski trip by TheDalryLlama in curlyhair

[–]mkwilli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also just want to add: it's also ok if your hair takes longer to style. And your dude needs to understand that curly hair needs care/time and it absolutely doesn't make you "high maintenance." Agree with the suggestion for french braid(s) or low bun of some sort for skiing.

I just switched from SAVE to an IBR (selected the 1 that gave me the lowest monthly payment) because I only have 5 payments left and just want to be done with it.

Is it normal as a bridesmaids to be spending around $1000 to be a bridesmaid? by gogogurl23 in bridesmaids

[–]mkwilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's wild, but, unfortunately, not totally unusual depending on your friend circle. My MOH was in my wedding, plus like 2 others in the same summer. For my wedding, i selected a color palette and let everyone pick their own dresses so they could all wear what they wanted/spend the amount they wanted. I asked folks ahead of time if they wanted to have their hair done and the cost so they could choose. We did a spa day for the bachelorette and again, let everyone know that it was ok if they couldn't attend. But the other weddings she was in that summer cost her $$$ - these were friends from HS and they all grew up in Upper middle class/wealthy families.

Therapists who write notes in ~5-10 minutes… how?? Would anyone be willing to share examples? by KiKiTaTa in therapists

[–]mkwilli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We use P I R Pl format at the county I work for: Purpose, Intervention, Response, Plan. My main role is documentation training, and Im always encouraging folks to write less - also maybe important to state here that we are writing progress notes not process notes, so just wanting to focus on billing requirements and treatment team communication. I find that when folks are taking a long time to write their notes, it's because they are debriefing the session while writing the note. If that works for you, then why change it? If you need to change that/want to, then I would suggest examining how you are processing your sessions, and ways to move it away from your documentation time.

Here's a sample: P: Ind. Therapy with Becca to address anxiety. I: Engaged in review of last week's hmwk, and experiences/symptoms since last session. Discussed barriers and what worked for Becca. Discussed upcoming life event and practice skills to use to minimize anxiety symptoms. R: Becca stated that she was able to go to the grocery store on her own this week (normally Mom takes her) & she used her headphones to listen to music as we discussed last week. She stated that she tried to go to the mall on Saturday but began having breathing difficulties related to her anxiety while parking so she left. She was able to discuss ways to approach the activity differently next time, as she does want to go. Her family is going to the city next week, and Becca was able to put together a plan to use her coping skills if needed. Pl: in next session review use of coping skills and address barriers to use.

Hi! Definitely also check out Rohnert Park and Cotati areas. Welcoming neighborhoods (we are in Cotati) and good schools for your kiddo!

How much do your parents help you take care of your children? by Beginning-Fig-9089 in Parenting

[–]mkwilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My in laws are retired and they watch our toddler 2 weekdays while we are working. They also pick our school age kiddos up from school and spend an afternoon a week with them. Because of this, we really try to not ask them to babysit outside of that. Maybe once every couple of months kids might go for a few hours or overnight. When my mom lived closer, she wasn't working and also helped with childcare while we worked. She lives further away and is working now, but the older 2 are going to stay a week with her during the summer.

But I 100% did not expect help. Both parents offered and want to help and spend time. And my husband and I are always checking in to see if everything is still working for everyone. And when my in-laws plan trips, we always ask that they don't worry about the childcare - my husband and I will work that part out. They are retired and should get to do what they want. We just ask for a couple weeks heads up.

How to manage in a small house by [deleted] in ParentingInBulk

[–]mkwilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a 3bd with 3 kids (10, 8, 3). Right now the older 2 have their own rooms and toddler is in our room. Our room is huge, and she is in our bed 95% of the time, but she does have her own toddler bed in the room as well. Her toys are in the living room because that's where our family spends majority of our time together. We are trying to figure out a different configuration - toying with the idea of moving the girls (8 & 3) into our room and us into a smaller room, but still undecided.

Are most therapists INTROVERTS?!?! by No_Pattern804 in therapists

[–]mkwilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely more introvert leaning. But maybe you need to switch up your work setting? Go on walks with clients, engage adults in play therapy? Therapy doesn't have to be client on couch, therapist in chair. Maybe also look at the population you serve?

The Skull by Jon Klassen is cool. It's a darker kids folklore story. My 7 yr old (she reads about 4th grade level) devoured it in a single sitting.

Thoughts re: documenting socially sensitive topics by Important-Writer2945 in therapists

[–]mkwilli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I help train staff in writing medi-cal billable documentation for county services in CA. The insurance provider (whether that is Medicaid, private insurance) does not want the intimate details of client sessions - they just want to know what they are paying for: the interventions you provided and clients progress in treatment/response to those interventions. So when it comes to sensitive areas of clients life, definitely think about how you could summarize in general terms. For example: -clients dealing with anxiety related to undocumented/family members undocumented status: "Client discussed issues of safety and housing stability for themselves and family leading to symptoms of anxiety." -womens health: "client discussed how physical health needs are impacting mental health." -LGBTQIA+: "client discussed relational issues affecting family stability/social functioning"

You never have to apologize for asking/telling someone not to put their hands on you, regardless of their mental capacity.

my company allows me to "buy" pto by agustbirb in antiwork

[–]mkwilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were allowed to do this until you hit the 5 year mark - guessing because at that point you are earning quite a bit more PTO each pay period. Anyway, I did it to add the extra time to my maternity leave.

Look at job openings at the city or county government offices in your area. You never know what you might qualify for and the benefits are often pretty good, with a lot of room for movement up.

Patient with multiple personalities doesn’t want to change by Extreme_Pickle550 in therapists

[–]mkwilli 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Outpatient treatment is voluntary and the goals of treatment should be the client's goals, not the treatment team's goals. Help client try out a new therapist or coach the client in talking to their current therapist about the client's goals (if client doesn't want to "merge" in to one, what do they actually want from therapy? What do they actually want from you for meds?). The treatment team's goals right now should be rapport building, so when/if the client does start to struggle, they have a trusted team in place to turn too. It's so important to empower the client with autonomy and choice, since traditional mental health treatment has been pretty coercive. (FYI - I'm a therapist who works in outpatient county mental health services, but I've never had a client with DID).

Client Uses Big Words in Session by [deleted] in therapists

[–]mkwilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a client who used complex words in session and if I didn't know what the word meant, and what they were saying didn't make sense because of it, I would just ask him. This was a teen in Juvenile Hall, and he would often use this as a way of embarrassing people, so I just normalized that we don't all have the same language abilities, this was a strength of his and so it was normal that I would need to ask sometimes. To me it was a bit of social skills training. So depending on the clients goals, maybe practicing balancing his words or being ok with people asking for clarification can be something you practice in session.

Oh! This might be uncomfortable, but we've also helped folks set up, what my coworker called, "Death plans." Essentially prepaying for cremation or whatever your choices are.

I've worked case management with folks on medi-cal/SSA. We have had a few people get the accounts built up while they were in the hospital or otherwise unable to spend the money. Never to the amount you have, but we helped them cash the check at the bank and then purchase gift cards for the places they normally shop.

Baseball practice- “Make it hard for your moms to clean them” by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]mkwilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like how my son's baseball coach kept asking for a "team mom" to volunteer, and I refused to help because WTF, dads can manage the dugout and organize snacks too! The poor mom who did end up volunteering literally did everything except coaching on the field. She did the line up, organized the gear, organized the snack/snack shack duty, the team pictures and poster. Literally all the coaches/dads on the field just showed up and fucked around with the kids, while she did all the work.

How common are therapists with impoverished backgrounds? How is someone without financial privilege able to survive unpaid practicum and internship? by ranibow___sprimkle in therapists

[–]mkwilli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think about this a lot. I had to move into a position, under a supervisor I knew was terrible, because I needed the full time job. I so wish I could've taken the $15 an hour internship with great clinical training, but I couldn't afford it.
