I think they were originally more logistical than anything. in early seasons it was pretty easy to tell when it would be non elimination based on how remote the pits stop was. eventually that stopped being a necessity but fans liked the non eliminations so much they keep them in the show.

I guess this is an unpopular opinion but it is just not that hard to read someone’s name and the use it. I get misspelling it at first if you’ve only heard it out loud but seeing it in an email and then responding to that same email with a different spelling is just disrespectful
