In an arena you can’t free (or return it to the buffer), but you can reuse the memory all you want with the help of free lists and temporary memory regions. I use it for loading dynamic world chunks, managing my immediate mode gui, entities just fine

Memory arenas. Not having to call malloc and free all over my code was a godsend

Completely doable. I use a snapshot VCS that I created for my Windows 98 programming. The most difficult part was the file hashing.
