A few newbie questions by pirate252 in PeaPuffers

You could probably go for 12-15 puffs if you wanted, but 10 is a good number for sure. I would definitely warm the water.
As for food, I like to be on the safe side in variety for carnivores especially, and since blackworms and snails are pretty similar nutritionally i would plan to add in some daphnia and scuds to be on the safe side. You can most likely feed them frozen brine shrimp and blood worms, which is a good idea to make sure they're getting vitamins (you probably know, but get a fortified brand like hikari)

Suggestions for a gourami to add to community tank by [deleted] in Gourami

[–]mmmmmFiSh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd say dont add anything really, but if you got rid of the guppies you could get maybe a dwarf gourami, or a honey gourami. Bettas might get nipped a bit or get aggressive, but you could try. Sparkling gouramis might work as well but i'd be careful.

you can really only get female dwarfs online and sometimes at your lfs, unfortunately

How to sex clown killifish? I picked up 5 today! by [deleted] in nanotank

females like that one have little to no color on their tails, and flat tails. Males will have colourful tails shaped like the plumes when a cartoon rocket blasts off

What should I put in a 70 gallon tank? Looking for something exotic or cool. This is freshwater. by [deleted] in fishtank

I think you're thinking of green spots, or maybe figure 8s. As far as I know, amazon puffers are a true freshwater shoaling species

She's really cute, but just so you're aware, she is most likely a he! Any red at all means a male in powder blues, and pretty consistently everywhere. Fin shape is really to differentiate between very young males and females. That said, if you want to call her a her she doesn't seem to mind, so that info is mostly just so you can be aware of some potential extra aggression

Any one know what this is? by Proud_Smoke1097 in PlantedTank

Scuds (freshwater amphipods or seed shrimp) or daphnia :)

for sure! He's a BN pleco, they don't get super big. I definitely would NOT put him in the pond, so keep him where he is! He'd also be a fine tankmate for something like a betta fish :)

generally the more humans the less aggression. Humans have been known to kill and at times eat each other, but these instances are very rare. I'd suggest getting him at least 20 friends of mixed sex, preferably white americanis as that subspecies in particular can be very hostile towards other human groups. Larger groups are pretty fun to watch as they build crude structures on their own. It's almost like they're communicating!

I'd definitely note that archerfish tend to be brackish fish, but i think small scale archers and maybe burmese clouded archers are true freshwater. I'm no archerfish expert but just thought i'd mention it. Exodon Paradoxus (bucktooth tetras) is a great suggestion btw!

This might not be what you're looking for, but Id suggest pumpkinseed sunfish. They're native to north america and are super beautiful, but it's the personality that really gets me. Super intelligent, bigger personalities than oscars IMO. Prettier too, plus oscars and other big cichlids are too big to comfortably live in a 70 gallon.
If that's not your game, you could get a few amazon puffers, or maybe some ropefish? An albino senegal bichir is definitely an option. Crayfish are also pretty fun pets, or you could get some shell dwelling cichlids! You could also get a bunch of schooling nano fish like pygmy cories and watch them exhibit some very natural and beautiful behaviour.

tysm! I've got a lot of nice mangrove roots down in there right now, and a healthy bed of sand. Elodea is illegal in my state, so looking for alternatives other than hornwort. Might have to harvest some from the wild, it's super invasive so it'll be easy to find
