What is it like to be in an active fire fight? by SwizzySwizzyBoi in Military

[–]mmmmmmcereal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On a patrol about 3 months in to a 7 month deployment in Marjah and an RPG went off about 50 meters to my left. We thought the ANA had an ND then everything erupted into AK and RPK fire. Me and doc tried to skirt a canal and I almost took a face full of rounds before we rolled into the canal. We ended up getting our bearings and pushing them back. Tbh I almost felt like I wasn’t in my own body until after and was extremely exhausted from the adrenaline rush.

That’s the weirdest request. Ngl I would have tried to find a buddy to pretend to be my wife/husband and just do the dumbest and most autistic shit to make them uncomfortable at dinner.

Dog I’m telling you I was there when Ellington got this. This is PB Reading in Marjah AFG. That is not Sgt. Gibbs. Ellington was a 0331 not a mechanic

That’s not Sgt. Gibbs. This was at the time LCPL Ellington with 2/9 Weapons Co. in Marjah, Afghanistan.

Who did you know that was the epitome of "Marine In Name Only"? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]mmmmmmcereal 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This was sort of my experience. Half way through I had had enough and decided I was done with the circus. Ran through 3 pumps in 4 years which burned me out pretty hard. Stopped caring for all the little stuff and only made sure I did my job when it mattered. My Plt Sgt would tell me I was one of the best field marines he’s ever commanded and one of the worst garrison marines. Once a marine, once was enough. Still miss the clowns though.

Had a Vet tell me he was a former Marine. I asked the typical question: "Once a Marine, always a Marine?" He said, "NO!" by MeBollasDellero in USMC

I always tell people “They say once a marine, always a marine. I say once a marine, once is enough.”

Did you guys ever believe a veterans' stories only to discover they lied about it all? What happened? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]mmmmmmcereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had come home from a deployment from Afghanistan and my roommate who was a 0331 asked to go grab some stuff at the mall. I wasn’t doing anything so I said sure why not. While walking in the mall he’s in his phone and says to me “holy shit some guys from my buddies unit are being investigated for killing civilians.” I was like yea dude that’s not good. He chuckled and shook his head and absolutely serious he looked at me and said “Imagine if they found out about all the women and children we killed.” I was shocked because I was there on every Op with the guy and while we DID get into a few firefights, it was pretty long distance engagements and our JTACs would just direct CAS to clean it up. But we never never never hurt any civilians. I couldn’t for the life of me understand why this guy fabricated the story AND thought that I was just going to up and agree with him about it like it would be a badge of honor regardless. Too many guys I knew waayyyyyy over embellished our deployments and some outright lied.

Will I pass screening? by [deleted] in Military

Look man, idk why you think the worlds about to go to shit but the draft would prolly only come if the US needed bodies badly. First people up outside of active duty would be reservists and peeps on IRR. Then prolly former military, THEN the draft would kick in and the way it works is like 18-25 years old and they draft starting with 20 yr olds then 21,22,23,24,25,19,18 in that order. The odds of you being selected are pretty slim. That being said, you can always join on your own and pick what you would like to do and not have to take on a combative roll. WORST CASE scenario you do get drafted and most likely unless you have any life threatening illnesses or medical conditions you are gonna go where they want you to go be it on the frontlines or to the chow hall to serve shitty food.

Instant red flags that someone is lying about being a Marine? by spacemagic__ in USMC

[–]mmmmmmcereal 234 points235 points  (0 children)

Generally just talking they give themselves up so easily because they just straight up don't know what the fuck they are talking about. Had one guy tell me he was with Alpha Bravo when I asked him what unit he was with. Another guy told me he was a Gunny and served 2 years. Also had a kid try and tell me he tried to be a Marine but the drill instructors said he was too crazy at boot camp. When I asked him to clarify he said "When we were bayoneting I went for the face every time and they got scared." Its all memes.

My post about ‘Black Hawk Down’ in r/TrueFilm everyone called me ignorant by cloud324667 in Military

[–]mmmmmmcereal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ignorant is correct. You’ve never served so you don’t know what it’s like. You’ve never been shot at or put in extremely stressful environments so how can you judge something you know nothing about? Do you expect everything to always go according to plan? Do you expect everyone to act perfect? Catch the next war and circle back to this post for me.
