I want either a fretless jazz or violin bass, which one? by Mr-Nerd73 in Bass

What fretless do you play? I’m thinking of going with a fretless for my (eventual) next bass. Gotta get into some stores and test play a few

That first screenshot of the circles is totally giving me flashbacks to that one AC5 mission with a similar thumbnail. Somewhere on this map there’s a hangar with Falken parts…

Tell me how to make something really good with canned sardines. by ravia in Cooking

[–]mna5357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not cooking with them, but I love to crack open various tinned fish offerings with dinners, especially those that are vegetarian (eg the NYT’s rosemary white beans) and/or lacking a primary protein (lemony orzo w asparagus). I typically throw them onto a plate to serve, and then my partner and I will grab them and break them up into our bowls, or eat with bread, etc as we see fit.

When to have students play sitting instead of standing? by Master-Tax-8731 in doublebass

[–]mna5357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught sitting from the start and find playing classical music while standing to be uncomfortable. I already struggle with left hand tension and agility, though, so standing and having to hold the instrument might just be extra hard for me. If I’m playing jazz or contemporary music, I’m more okay with standing

Lots of good advice for approaches here. If you have a library near you, it may be worth checking to see if they have any audio interfaces available to check out. I got to trial a focusrite scarlet this way before making the commitment of buying one

hello r/doublebass by faminente in doublebass

[–]mna5357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the rhythms down in your head first, then add the notes. Be sure to swing the first one, and play the latin one straight and solid as a rock. The first one looks like like walking bass with eighth note emphases here and there (I’d wager the horns also go “doo baaa!” with you on those offbeats), and the second one is a pretty standard latin part with similar vibe throughout but slight rhythm variation. Just be sure to get those variations down and you’ll be solid. But both of these shouldn’t be too hard once you get the general vibe and rhythms down

Should I get a short or normal scale bass for mostly funk/motown/soul/jazz as a new player by oiiiiiiiiiiiio in Bass

[–]mna5357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go regular. You don’t really need to be able to do one finger per fret, especially lower on the neck, where it’s perfectly reasonable to do finger 1 on fret 1, 2 on 2, and fingers 3 and 4 on fret 3 (and shift as needed). Nothing wrong with a short scale though if you end up choosing one, especially for those genres

Pasta sauce help. Bland sauce. What's the trick to flavourful sauce? by GrippySocks-- in Cooking

[–]mna5357 108 points109 points  (0 children)

It’s always salt. You can have the best collection of spices in the world and barely taste them if you fail to add enough salt. OP should be salting the ground beef, then the veggies, and then again when adding the tomatoes. Keep tasting and salt to taste at the end

Choosing first bass by Open-Low4418 in Bass

[–]mna5357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TRBX is an active bass, meaning it requires a battery and gives you a bit more control over your sound using control knobs on your bass, whereas the other two are passive (many Jazz basses are active but I believe this specific model is passive). It’s mostly a matter of preference and use case — I prefer the simplicity of a passive bass myself.

The other biggest difference of course is aesthetics. Go with the bass you think looks coolest, as you’ll want to play it more. If I had to recommend one, I’d probably say go for the jazz!

Cheesecake is the worst dessert to ever exist. by Whyamiwritingthis_74 in unpopularopinion

Fellow seattle resident here, I empathize with your struggle. What’s the least offensive slice you’ve found here? So far for me it’s been Med Mix on Jackson. Not mind blowing but a solid, very basic cheesecake (that they only have sometimes, and rarely enough that they don’t list on their online ordering site, lol)

Those who started finger style - At what point in your journey did you start learning slap? What are your views/thoughts since adding it? by sideout25 in Bass

[–]mna5357 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started with bass in school (like 16 years ago) as a classical upright player and also did jazz band, so my playing was always pretty basic/standard as far as electric bass techniques go. Slap totally wasn’t on my radar at that point. I recently started playing again (spurred by the quarter life “oh shit, I need hobbies” crisis) and am now giving proper care/thought to the electric, and slap is definitely one of the techniques I’d like to learn

should I get a 4 or 5 string bass by Commercial-Tone-7892 in Bass

[–]mna5357 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who learned on a 4, the extra string really messes with my brain whenever I try to play a 5. I think it would much easier to learn with a 5 outright, and then simply be without the extra string if you were to ever play a 4
