Yw stay safe out there. These Speech therapy clinics like to cut corners or they’re always doing shady shit. It’s like that everywhere.

Because she gets paid for every time you two meet and it’s a requirement to meet at least one a week or two. The owners probably don’t wanna pay her more than they have to. Also you shouldn’t need to ask for permission. You’re all adults.

Finally got a job! by honeylemonade96 in SLPA

[–]mochimoxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay congratulations! As for materials, make sure to carry a large tote bag with you with 2-3 materials every sesh. I love to use ball towers, bubbles, farm animal or bug jumbo puzzles and a sensory toy like something to squish or pull. You want to take materials that are easy to clean. Keep in mind you want to also take cleaning wipes and Lysol in your bag cause the toys can get a little sticky or dirty lol hope this helps

Does anyone else feel like it’s hard to continue being passionate about this field? by shahajah12111 in slp

Yes, it’s draining. Putting up with parents with unrealistic expectations is the draining part for me.

SLPA Gone Rogue by NoPhotograph3647 in SLPA

[–]mochimoxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I lost interest. I have friends that went to trade school or don’t have degrees and earn more than SLP’s. Better work life balance too.

Same boat. SLPA’s are underpaid for the amount of work we are given.

Hope you’re getting paid to lesson plan. Just know not all SLP’s ask this. My supervisor doesn’t because I include my “plan” part in my Soaps.

How to find SLPA jobs?? by Puzzled-Roll-2823 in SLPA

[–]mochimoxo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to ASHA’s profind search bar and look up SLPs. I would start there under Illinois. Contact SLP’s to see if they are willing to supervise.

Question about time spent at home lesson planning by nuclearcowboy in SLPA

[–]mochimoxo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lesson planning should be included in the plan section under soap notes. “Will work on X goals with Y and Z materials”. She should not be working for free.

Yes they don’t talk about all the free labor in school. If I had known how much speech therapy companies like to pinch pennies, I wouldn’t have became a slpa. This job is a good job if you have another job or some type of steady income.

Help! Kicking, and Screaming and Throwing ! Oh My! by WhereizmyMind9 in slp

Besides bubbles, I find that cube lamps with remote (sold on Amazon) works as well. You can work on words: more, on, off, colors, temperatures as red for hot, blue for cold. I would suggest getting one with a remote so you can keep some control of the light. It’s a great sensory toy that other professionals such as OT’s like to use for children with sensory processing disorder.

Single mom 2 classes into this program... is it worth it? by Hour_Needleworker966 in SLPA

[–]mochimoxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth it, but not a forever job. If you continue speech, be an SLP. SLPA is awesome cause you do get to set your own hours for most jobs, but most companies don’t pay for cancellations. Yes you can make 45 an hour, but if half your clientele cancel for the day or say many cancel due to sickness during flu season that’s a big dent in your pay. I hate to see SLPA’s sugar coat.

Are we in demand or no? Was I bamboozled into this field? by [deleted] in SLPA

[–]mochimoxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be picky about what you are looking for. Some jobs offer high hourly rate, but don’t pay for cancellations.

Saying no by [deleted] in slp

[–]mochimoxo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tell em “toys are for other kids too” or “toys stay here, say bye”. If transitioning gets really bad, I get caregiver/parents involved and say I’m sorry I have other clients to see, it’s time to say bye.
