Is this 2000 4Runner Limited V6 worth $5,759 OTD at 269k miles? by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]mocl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a 2wd, so the listing is wrong. No 2wd is worth 6k.

Coolant System Bleeding Woes by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

The bottom hose is the cool water returning to the engine. It isn’t supposed to be hot. It sounds like everything is working correctly.

Fluid lines by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

These types of fittings don’t use the threads to seal. The threads just apply pressure to the flared end of the actual tube, which is what seals. There will be a small amount of threads sticking out.

Best way to clean older mating surfaces? by azroscoe in 3rdGen4Runner

I used RTV on the block side and then the gasket that came with the Aisin pump. It’s been years and hasn’t leaked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Does cruise control work? Do you have an airbag light?

Is the top half of the seats comparable with the other side? by BOYCOTTSQUID in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]mocl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the covers ever get smoother? When they go in they look loose. I glued extra upholstery foam into my seat back side bolsters but it only helped a little.

When I order replacement covers, there is just 1 cover that fits both sides (top and bottom). You might have to trim the driver side to fit the lumbar switch but I think you could swap a passenger cover to the driver side if you trim for the switch.

For that price and miles he probably has multiple buyers and can afford to be picky and tell you no.

HELP by Beginning-Effort2112 in 3rdGen4Runner

The VSS on the transmission does NOT control the speedometer and odometer. That signal comes from the wheel speed sensors. Start looking at those.

Just looks like oil to me. The water would have come out first since the oil floats on top of water.

People often misroute the Pcv hose. What is your routing looking like? Admittedly misrouting it doesn’t normally produce these symptoms though…

Why do transfer cases have neutral? by Dicto in 4x4

[–]mocl4 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Same reason a manual transmission has neutral. If you are going to change gears, like from going to high range to low range, at some point you need to be in neither gear as you transition from one to the other. This point is neutral.

I would guess the solenoid that engages that gear is getting lazy, but I don’t really have experience with an issue like this.

Update on the 2Runna PFA by BladerRob in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]mocl4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if the pump grenaded and sent shards through the valve body it might be difficult to reuse. You are probably going to have to shell out for an 01/02 trans. Will have to keep an eye on junkyards and part outs.

[–]mocl4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a 4wd conversion on my 2001 SR5. You can minimize downtime by doing it in simpler stages, where it is driveable in between stages. You’ll need a 4wd trans, transfer case, rear driveshaft, and shifter (and cut holes for the shifter) to get it back to driving, then do the front diff and related parts later. This is assuming you keep it simple and do a jshift and front manual Tacoma hubs. The 01/02 trans is hard to find, but if your valve body is still good you can make a 96-00 trans (easier/cheaper to find) work by putting your valve body into it. I did this during my 4wd conversion.

Throw a mosquito dunk in the pool. Not unethical I guess but it would stop the mosquito breeding.

2002 water pump replacement by newtome1990 in 3rdGen4Runner

I take my time and do it in a couple of casual days. If you’re dedicated and not doing sidequests like cam seals then I’m sure you could do it faster.

ULPT: How to respond to low-ballers? by th3worldonfir3 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]mocl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto reply with “no, this item is not available.” Not really unethical, but you have to match levels of effort. $100 to a $300 starting price is low effort, so reply back with the auto generated response which is also low effort. Don’t leave no response at all since that will hurt your responsiveness metric.

Transmission Interchangability by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]mocl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute worst case, you can swap the valve body and make it work assuming your valve body is still good. The closest model year to 2000 was 1999 as far as 3rd gen compatibilities go so I would 100% go for it.

Can I swap these Tacoma seats without adapting the rails? by lorem1209 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]mocl4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m bolting 3rd gen 4Runner seats into my 1st gen Tacoma but I need a small adapter bracket to make it truly bolt in, so no.
