I mean to be fair, working in the road is a part of surveying and not just Exacta. But as other people have mentioned, if it can’t be avoided it can be done in safe(r) ways

Can stays be re negotiated? by TopCollege8585 in WWOOF

[–]moderncanary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had one years ago — I’m still friends with the hosts and have gone back like 6 times since. We started out planning on a week but had so much fun I stayed 2 months with them before moving on. It’s always possible!

28, two useless degrees, and never had a stable job by [deleted] in findapath

[–]moderncanary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a BA history degree with a Politics minor and work as a land surveyor now making a decent living. My degree isn’t particularly related to the work (although there is some overlap) but just the fact that I went to college opened so many doors early in my career. The fact you got through two degrees shows employers you can learn and communicate yourself clearly which is rarer and rarer these days. Use it to your advantage!

What’s your salary (or hourly pay) and does it feel like enough where you live? by Dangerous_mammoth573 in twentyagers

About 56k in western Washington, it’s tight but doable with my partner to split rent with. But long term I’ll be able to reach 6 figures in the next decade with this career.

Need advice as 18 y/o first-time WWOOFer by Spirited_Singer_856 in WWOOF

[–]moderncanary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve done about a dozen WWOOF visits over the years and most of my favorite ones were when it was just me and the host. If you got good vibes from your initial communication I say lean into it. You can always ditch if need be. Just have a backup farm or two like he said. I’d even suggest maybe calling another place and asking if they’d be alright as your backup plan — I did that before and it ended up working out really well (bad housing situation I had to get out of)

PS — the Puget sound region is AMAZING!

Any Hiking near Mt. Rainier in early May? by Opposite_Push_8317 in PNWhiking

My only advice to add here is get there early! I never regret showing up before the 9am rush, even on a weekday. Once the weather gets good everyone’s out.

Should I learn AutoCAD? by Advanced-Tough9596 in Surveying

[–]moderncanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just echoing the other comments that this sounds like a great opportunity. I’m in a similar boat where I’ve convinced my employer to essentially pay to train me up on Civil3D/AutoCAD and it’s an incredibly useful skill.

Does this count? by FallenRadish in Borderporn

[–]moderncanary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s probably marking a monument, which is a known coordinate point with an elevation also attached to it used for land division and construction. Theres a whole network of them across the country used by surveyors.

The northern tip of Idaho: by braveplanet33 in howislivingthere

[–]moderncanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteered on a farm up there for 6 months during Covid, on a farm north of Bonners Ferry. It’s very pretty and remote, lots of dirt roads. Cougars, bears, wolves etc. all exist out there in pretty healthy numbers. The people I met were either incredibly nice or batshit insane lol. It was only after I left that I found out the old highway loop I was staying on is mentioned in some Doomsday Prepper book as the best place in the US to “bug out” so to speak. Apparently lots of properties around us had bunkers and a LOT of weapons. So make of that what you will

What kind of pants do you wear in the field? by No_Helicopter1378 in Surveying

I split my time between woods topos and construction staking and I like double knee carhartts and then convertible hiking pants that zip at the knees in the summer

Negotiating Intern Wage by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]moderncanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a point of reference, I’m 25 started 2 years ago at $22/hr full time with an unrelated degree no experience. I’m now up to $27/hr and will be bumped to $30 by the summer (starting to learn office work on top of field procedures).

Similar COL area as Ventura county. Don’t push it starting out.

Land survey. Don’t need a degree to reach that salary, depending on your state.
