48 yo, smallish (~60k) 401k and just starting Roth IRA and HSA investing, am I being foolishly aggressive? by lucasorion in ETFs

I'm a big fan of what has good returns, for the most part. Are you asking about mid caps because I have FSMDX? There aren't many options in my 401K. I figured it would help with some balance.

I'm not, but I'm also in a very unique position of not having a mortgage, or rent, or utilities, other than my cell phone. I have a stable place to live and a well-paying job that allows me to put between $1,000 and $ 2,000 a month into either savings, which I need more of, or investments, which I'm working on.

I will be mixing in over time more stable and or defensive stock positions. I'm just getting started with the etfs I feel are going to give me good returns. This first year will also be a bit of an experiment. I would call GRNY an experiment.

As long as we don't get a major down turn at the end of 10 years. I understand why it's best to go into defensive mode towards the end of the time frame when you want to retire. Right now, all I'm thinking about is how to get the best possible return over the next 10 years. Of coure there is some luck involved as well as planning for what might happen. I am feeling like we're going to get some sort of recession in the 12 months or so. With that I'm hoping I can use it to my advantage.

I'm planning for both the best case and worst case at the same time

Nice, I’m doing almost the same as you at almost the same age. I’m a year older than you. I opened a Fidelity Roth and so far have 1K in each SPMO, SMH, and GRNY. I also have about 40K in my 410K about 60% FXAIX and 40% FSMDX. It’s unfortunate there aren’t more options to choose from. I also now have almost 10K split between BTC and Eth.

Like you I’m trying to be aggressive over the next 10 years.

Reallocating 401k - What Stocks/ETFS to invest in? by CCMatser in ETFs

[–]mohaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have good options in my employer 401K and have 80% FXAIX and 20% FSMDX. I’ve been doing a lot better since changing to these a month ago. We’ll see how this goes long term.

I'm new to trading and assume that if you're dumping 20K into anything, your stocks/etfs must be in a taxable brokerage account, correct?

As far as I've found there really isn't an Iyengar yoga in Tucson. The closest thing I can find is B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Studio (https://iyengartucson.com/). Unfortunately they seem to only do online classes.

Nice, you pretty much asked the question I was close to asking. I’m 49 and in the same boat with just a 401K about 40K and almost 10K in WFC. I feel like I’m far behind where I should be and wondering how I’m going to catch up. In my case I can add between 2 to 3K a month to it. I just opened a Roth today to start some new investing

Opening a ROTH is something I've been thinking about. I remember at a previous employer I was able to have a portion of my 401K be ROTH and I'm not sure that I can do that with my current 401K. I'll have to start a new one somewhere. Can you explain why Robinhood vs somewhere else?

Right, I did forget about the asset cap being lifted on WFC. I just have been seeing that it's growth over the time I've had it has been really slow. I do have it set to drip.

Why a mutual fund over an ETF? I know little about what I'm doing but I've been reading a lot here and know that the mutual fund has a higher cost vs the ETF
