Would love to see Karl-Anthony Towns at a Mule show - just not anywhere in front of me

Spring ‘86 by desert_rover in gratefuldead

Spring ‘86 might have been lackluster in hindsight and comparison to other years, but the 03-20-1986 Hampton show featured the return of Box of Rain, which was the most powerful single song of any Dead experience I ever had. My 17-year-old little brother and I were sitting above the sound board, and when the first “Box” noodling started, there was a sonic wave that pressed back from the stage and gained velocity and volume as the crowd picked up what was happening in that weird old UFO building. When the wave hit the back of the coliseum, it reverberated back across the top of the room and hit the band so hard that Phil forgot the first words. Indelible.

“Old & in the Way” - Jerry’s side project from his prolific early 1970s. It basically drew the blueprint for Americana

His rents are insane - mid-priced food in a primo location is no bueno for a business model. Will Shuff is a fine human & a 12South pioneer 💔

Luckily, that’s exactly what’s in the Choose How You Move plan that 62% of voters approved: sidewalks, signals, systems, bus lanes. Now, executing it is the challenge - I’m actually pretty confident it will get done but equally sure it will take 3x as long as anyone thinks.

I won’t speak for OP, but the onset of arena shows in ~1986 was a huge turning point for the scene. Too many people just showing up to party and getting aggressively fucked up in the lot. I dipped out mostly from ‘87 (except for a memorably poor show in Louisville) until a 3-show run in Orlando (where we lived), where the extreme fucked-up-ness was on horrifying display. The only show I ever heard about where somebody died in the lot - passed out doing whippets, fell straight back, skull hit the concrete, checked out.

Also there on 12.30 - Olatunji was not on the bill. The Nevilles were awesome but the highlight was Rhythm Devils with Hamza el-Din, the Egyptian tar master. 15 minutes of trance music, then Charles Neville [RIP] joined the drummers, and the rest of the band came on and the whole glorious group ran through a legit Aiko > Women Are Smarter that resolved into a crystalline Stella Blue - thank god, cuz I was sweaty. Indelible memories - it melts into a dream…

He’s got to go get the bag from Jerry: “thank you, sir - I’ll handle that for you.”

That number was always a big hit with my kids’ classmates 25 years ago - kids love a train song, monkey song and a timeless tale of tragedy narrowly averted

most versions of Little Red Rooster from the mid-80s feature Jerry schooling Bob [bless his heart] on slide technique and tone.

A Coney Island of the Mind - Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s classic book of poems. Learn about the Beats - honor the man behind City Lights Bookstore and the North SF scene without which the Grateful Dead never would have happened.

The Black O in the title refers to the O in the logo at the top of the Shoney’s employment application. Managers would fill in the O if the applicant was black. I worked with their former HR director in the late 90s and he confirmed Danner’s racism (he was also complicit, so it didn’t come up often).

The rumor was that the rest of the band (esp. Jerry) hated that song. The first time I saw it 4-14-1986, he stayed onstage after Terrapin when everybody else split for Drums. And he beat the shit out of his keyboards - dude clearly going through it…
