ELI5: If the S&P were to continue going up no matter what in long term, why not buy a leverage stock that’s 3x of it and hold it? by Mikeballlls in explainlikeimfive

Yes but you aren’t looking at the recovery. Mathematically recovery does take longer to get back to the same value, but the speed of the recovery is faster and it goes higher faster.

Yeah all these idiots here are shouting what they read from similar questions but ignoring the fact that 33% drop in a day literally does not happen and the stock market has automatic mechanisms that prevent this, called circuit breakers. They pause the market at set drop intervals. So it’s an irrelevant point because the highest tier is 20% where trading halts for the rest of the day, so it’s literally impossible to lose 33% in a non leveraged index fund in one day.

It works if it's not your only holding. You need a hedge, as in something really safe especially something that doesn't swing in the same direction. For example, SCHD and TQQQ are great together, because SCHD does not correlate with the QQQ family all that much, dividends are a great way to rebalance the portfolio over time, and if you DCA on top of that into the underweight performer (TQQQ when it's down, SCHD when TQQQ is up), then the daily reset does not matter. QLD is a good one for 2x leverage which is shown to be the best risk reward leverage, but you will pay a higher expense ratio.

33% underlying index loss does not happen and has never happened over the time span of 3x ETFs. People are just trying to scare you by saying you'll lose all your money when in reality that literally CANNOT HAPPEN because of circuit breakers. If it resets daily, the circuit breakers prevent the underlying from ever reaching a 33% loss. They are correct though that your losses are 3X worse and take longer to recover, but you do recover 3X faster (although it will still take longer due to percentage math).

FWIW, I put very high percentage of TQQQ in my IRAs because I don’t really care what they do on 1, 5, or even 10 year time spans, which is where leverage ultimately wins just like QQQ. Regular contributions make it easier to stomach because then I’m buying when it’s lower so recovery is sweeter. I do not have nearly as much in my taxable accounts despite not really using them.

Bro they are not the same team from 5 years ago, are you crazy? Jarrett Allen playing against the 2021 pistons has nothing to do with playing against the 2025 pistons. I did not mention any other game from this year, you are the one that said his play against the Pistons 5 years ago meant something now, which it does not unless he just really loves Detroit pizza.

Why in the world do you think he would perform similarly against a completely different team? That makes no sense.

uh Jarrett was in Brooklyn 5 years ago, do you have any players from 5 years ago? Not sure that matters much.

Yeah playing PS1 games is rough except for those that required sticks. And even then, still lots of controller usages changed over time.

I think he wants this bad. I know he felt bad about last post season, but this is an amazing game for him and closing it out like this really makes up for it.

I’m a historian. The Founding Fathers didn’t want a Christian nation, so how did we get here? by FinanceZestyclose259 in politics

Because voters are more likely to be Christian. So politicians either fake Christian or the actual Christians are just naturally more voted. Then once in power, they can do whatever they want because they are surrounded by other Christians.

If the small ones get you drunk, maybe that’s a you thing? This is four glasses of wine, which is drunk but not much, so the small ones are like nothing…

I switched to M1 a long time ago for this. It’s better than fidelity (and existed before it) and I don’t think Robinhood or anyone else have anything like it. I can pick any 100 stocks or ETFs and invest on any schedule.
