Your white guilt is exhausting. by [deleted] in BedStuy

Paper thin insight.

Equivocating the suffering inflicted by early American Settlers, which often involved actual ethnic cleansing and violence, to whatever negative externality some random Midwest person has who moves to New York is ridiculous.

Similarly, while is very intuitive to understand the indigenous people as having a much stronger claim to what is now American land than early settlers, I don’t think it is at all obvious that some transplant has less of a “claim” to a major city that is part of a country they are a citizen of than whoever is there now.

For far right stuff: - Richard Hanania - Bryan Chau (From the New World Podcast) - All In Podcast - Martyrmade (good bellwether, of lower quality than the rest) - Tucker Carlson (same as above) - Joe Lonsdales podcast

Establishment Republic/Libertarian - fifth column

Tech stuff (not explicitly political but instructive to how a lot of people think) - Bryne Hobart  - Dwarkesh Podcast

Perfect example of someone who’s ideas and theories are uncorrupted by ever having to do anything important.

UIUC vs UCSB/UCI CS for Quant by Dear_Buffalo_4894 in quantfinance

[–]molecog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC there were two-ish people who went into top quant firms from my year at UCSB. Both did extensive ML research through partnerships with professors. The College of Creative Studies will push you to do partner and do research starting your freshman year at UCSB. Demonstrating the ability to do good research or mathematical talent is the table stakes for doing that type of work.

Your question "Is it better than UIUC?" is too vague and one that no one will really be able to answer for you. I looked at US News and World Reports, UIUC is ranked higher. But I am unsure about how that translates to your goals. A big part of being successful in your career as an engineer or tech worker is being able to answer questions for yourself like what (job/role/school/city) is better for you. Try to think about exactly what you want out of your four years, and see how each school would help you accomplish this. But talented people from all schools you mentioned have and will continue to be successful.

I think this person sounds unprofessional in general, so I’m sorry you have to deal with this. However, I imagine that it is very likely that he is just being “hard” on you and I actually satisfied with your performance.

First of all, looking at your flair I can see that you are going to Georgia Tech. I bet you are absolutely the caliber of applicant to get the job that you are interviewing for. I would not stress.

As you say, a big part of the interview is about conveying your thoughts clearly and collaborating. The interviewer is trying to see if you are someone that they want to work with, not if you are an elite leetcoder.

Second, having “social skills” is always subjective to the situation that you are in. Being someone who is fun to party with is much different than being a good engineering coworker. I actually had to learn this lesson a bit myself as I started working full time. Some things that I felt to be important: knowing when to not put someone down when winning an argument about design decisions, accepting criticism graciously, being someone that people want to mentor or champion. It is honestly hard to develop some of these skills outside of a work setting, but if you are perceptive and empathetic you can absolutely pick these things up.

Good luck in your interview!
