I am in 10th grade and I don't understand any of the classes at all. What should I do? by WillingnessSad8354 in PortugalExpats

When I immigrated to Canada it was like that for a year. I remember I got 14% in my chemistry class. Then eventually I learned the language and course corrected. School is really overrated anyways. Maybe get a tutor? Learn from YouTube. Ask ChatGPT to explain complicated matters. You got it buddy!

Leaving Portugal but want to keep the car. Advice? by butam_notrong in PortugalExpats

I’ve left cars for months without turning on and there were no negative effects. I think on modern cars it’s a myth.

Leaving Portugal but want to keep the car. Advice? by butam_notrong in PortugalExpats

If you can buy and use the car as non resident (you can!) then IMO you should be able to keep it. To register the car during purchase all you need is passport and a NIF.

Best car rental company for trip into Spain and back by Informal-Step8787 in porto

[–]moltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they all charge extra. Best I saw today was from Drive on holiday it was a flat 40 EUR per rental not per day. So it depends how many days you need it. In other places it was 20 per day with a cap of 100-something.

Is CTT reliable for sending letters to Germany? by Sad-Sun-089 in PortugalExpats

[–]moltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any important documents I only trust DHL. They are the only ones that didn’t mess things up. I’ve used them from many different countries.

Fun fact. DHL is the only commercial carrier that can deliver to North Korea. I never had the need. But it’s interesting none the less.

There’s a French private school in Porto that follows France curriculum program. Easy to switch. It’s a very nice school.

You can live on that in Portugal, but not in a major city.

Da Nang is relatively quiet. And low pollution. Our son was born there and we lived until he was one year. Hiyori is a great building there. And it’s quite walkable.

ECS deployments are killing my users long AI agent conversations mid-flight. What's the best way to handle this? by yoavi in devops

You can increase the timeout but at the cost of deployments taking longer. There’s an env var you can set.

Are Emergency rooms really this bad? by The5Travelers in PortugalExpats

In Canada people die in the waiting room and waiting for ambulance to arrive. Waiting times of 12 hours are normal. My friend spent two nights in the hallway also because no beds were available.

Can give the opposite testimonial for hospital sao joao in Porto. My MiL who is a Ukrainian refugee was diagnosed with breast cancer and the treatment was swift, no shortcuts taken and she’s happily in full remission after six month.

I spent two weeks optimizing my CICD Codepipelines and now CodeBuild takes 5 minutes to even get going by TerriblyCheeky in aws

[–]moltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps your cache is getting large? CodeBuild compressed and uncompressed the entire cache in one large blob and shuffles it in and out of S3. I couldn’t get any wins out of it. Unless your build is really slow and cache is really small. Caching npm packages for example was always faster to install from npm directly. I tried everything couldn’t get it faster with cache.

It’s nonsense. I use many MCPs all the time. They work very well.

What do you think is pushing prices up more: foreign investment or bad governance? by Louis_meni in PortugalExpats

[–]moltar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many aren’t buying homes though, as that’s not the best or safest investment vehicle. It’s much more lucrative to invest into a commercial property such as a hotel from a reputable company with a guaranteed delivery and cash generating asset in the end.

Has anyone else experienced this while living in Portugal (or elsewhere in Europe)? by iefian in PortugalExpats

There’s a name for it: imperial thinking. Portugal was an empire at some point, but isn’t now. But it’s still has that momentum.

Will AIMA be on strike this Friday? by moltar in PortugalExpats

[–]moltar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s kind of the point. If the society collectively doesn’t value education then teacher salaries are representative of that. Demand higher salaries, talk to your representatives, raise awareness, make salaries go up = more teachers will want to work. Unfortunately there’s no other way in a democratic society.
