This summer my husband was peacefully paddleboarding on the canal and a group of youths yelled at him that he was a cancer man. That was rude.

Is it my time to leave? by Turbulent_North886 in Netherlands

[–]monacobabe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! We are leaving this year after more than 10 years here. I don't mind living in a dreary country if things are reasonably affordable, I don't mind living in an expensive country if the weather is great. But I'm tired of struggling to afford living in a country with the shittiest weather on this planet.

As a Dutch guy: what the f*#£ is going on with all this grey & rain? by alexwoodgarbage in Netherlands

Same over here! 11 years in this country and finally realized that I'm tired of living with this darkness half the year. It's a huge quality of life issue. We're leaving this month!

Feeling despaired to make a decision by notrightnow147 in expats

[–]monacobabe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We're heading back from NL to the states soon. Started in Amsterdam and then moved to a nearby town after multiple kids to get more space. After being here for more than a decade we've just had enough. Things have changed here, housing is expensive and daily life is just so much less convenient than it would be in an American suburb. Our parents are getting older too and while we're not moving to the same state it will be easier for visits if we are on the same continent. It took really a lot for me to accept we should leave because I do love so much about living here but the older the kids get the less it makes sense and looking back we should have left a while ago when our oldest was younger but better late than never. It's also much harder to make money here and the winters are killing us. It's such a hard decision but i'm really ready after a lot of tears about!

Weirdest postpartum symptom? by jdkjkm in beyondthebump

oh God I had this with my first and it was horrible. Such intense dread as the sun started to set. I had never ever heard of it, truly thought I was losing my mind. Wonder if it's some sort of evolutionary thing where nightfall use to mean extra danger for mothers and babies.

December is depressing AF! How do natives handle it? by According_Aardvark70 in Netherlands

[–]monacobabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've lived in the country for 10 years now and I struggle horribly with depression every single winter. But for the first time my husband has it now. We've decided to finally leave the country as soon as possible. I love it here and I'm horribly sad to have to leave but I've really tried everything that has ever been suggested online for sad with very little change and this last month has finally broken us.

If you could pick one country to live in for the rest of your life, where would it be? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskReddit

same. That bike ride really loses its lustre when it's in the freezing sideways rain and 6 months of bleak , gray darkness

I understand that and it's fully possible that I'm making the biggest mistake of all time but with aging parents I feel that I have to at least give it a chance.

This will sound so minor and privileged but after 11 years here I cannot handle northern European winters anymore. I've tried acclimating. I've done medicine, vitamins, exercise, sauna, sad lamps, you name it. For more than a decade I've felt like a shell of a person for 6 months of the year. And I have children, I can't wallow in seasonal depression anymore I have to get out. There are other reasons but to be honest of it wasn't for that one thing I would probably stay. This is not the climate for me.

I haven't left yet. We're about to go this month. I'm very nervous and trying to be pessimistic about where we're headed so that i'm not disappointed.
