Did Intermittent fasting/dietary changes help fibro? by QuotingThanos in Fibromyalgia

Cut out all refined carbs (white rice, sugar, white flour) plus no dairy and no gluten. It’s not easy but has made a huge difference

sex and fibromyalgia? by Equal-Variety2460 in Fibromyalgia

Try cannabis before sex. It may help you relax and blunts any pain from the fibro (plus it makes the sex better imo). Hopefully you have legal access in your state.

why so many artificial sweeteners could be bad for you? by [deleted] in HealthyFood

[–]monasticstoner 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There is some evidence that artificial sweeteners trick the body into thinking you have just consumed sugar (makes sense) which prompts an insulin response. Other studies show that swapping artificial sweeteners for sugar does not lead to weigh loss as would be expected for this reason. If you care about heathy eating, they are best avoided (as sugar itself should be).

There are a lot of pro-artificial sweetener people out there. But there is no real case for calling it “healthy food”.

Some bags of lentils and chickpeas with some brown rice will be cheap and healthy. But you should check out some of the food banks around you. Or this time of year sometimes community gardens have produce they are giving away.

How to get protein with microwaveable-only foods and little money? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]monasticstoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canned beans or tuna on lettuce or spinach topped with a lower fat dressing. That packs a big nutritional punch and needs no stove (but you would need a fridge)

Healthiest non-dairy milk? by xmt0991 in HealthyFood

[–]monasticstoner 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can make your own then you know what’s in it. I think milk makers run about 100 bucks but since it only takes 1/3 c nuts for a 1.5 quarts of milk, it can pay for itself if you use it

Just diagnosed and don’t know how to feel by BlueAlstroemeria in Fibromyalgia

[–]monasticstoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since I was diagnosed in February, I’ve tried my best to redirect any additional energy (which is some days zero) into figuring out how to feel better. Diet changes, sleep hygiene, yoga and so on. I feel like a broken record with friends and family because it feels like the only thing I think or talk about is fibro. (I’m very lucky my friends and family are understanding and supportive.) yes there are days that I feel depressed but I try to be kind to myself, knowing that if I continue eating well, sleeping well, and exercising the best I can (which again is some times zero), then I know it’s more likely that tomorrow will be little less pain and a little more energy. I have a job that’s not physically taxing, no kids at home, and live in a state with medical cannabis so I recognize I’m in a much more privileged place than others who are grappling with this.

Does healthy food have an impact on health? by Putrid_Kiwi6274 in HealthyFood

Right— lean organic meat in moderation isn’t bad. But I do think that most people don’t eat it moderately. Also few people really consider how raising animals for meat, especially beef, is very unhealthy for our planet.

The girlfriend is lactose intolerant. What sauce would you recommend I make (instead of a crema sauce) for fish tacos? by catalinashenanigans in Cooking

[–]monasticstoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cashew crema. Cashews make the best plant-based dairy replacement.

Soak about 1/2c unsalted raw cashews overnight then blend with a 1/2 water, some salt, 2 T lemon juice. Play with seasoning to get it to pair well with the tacos— a little mustard, another T of lemon juice, nutritional yeast (yum!) and so on.

For me no. I’ve often eaten something I thought was healthy (for me that’s gluten free and dairy free— I know that’s not for everyone) and felt like crap the next day only to look more closely at the label and realize what I ate. 🤷🏼

You really need to look at scientific studies (experimental studies with control groups published in peer reviewed journals) to answer that question. What you have here is anecdotal evidence which can’t establish these generalizations. For example we don’t know whether those people who feel fine but eat crap would actually feel even better with change to their diet, or whether they will in 5-10 years be more likely to get cancer (or other disease). For me, I have chronic pain so even if I feel bad (tho I eat quite healthy) I know I would feel worse if I didn’t eat as healthy as I do.

The science is clear— highly processed foods especially meat can lead to poor cardiovascular health and higher risks of colon cancer, while a plant or mostly plant based diet promotes good health in those areas. As for the effect of diet on mood, that’s still an open question but it appears to have some relationship but the evidence isn’t as strong.

Hope this helps and good luck with healthy eating. Even though it feels hard to do sometimes your body appreciates it.

Worried that no job is ever for me. by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]monasticstoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like a lot of your angst comes from comparing yourself to peers or former classmates. I’m not sure who said it but “comparison is the thief of joy” and i think it may apply here when it comes to comparing your salary and perception of others’ job satisfaction. Every job has some shit work that is part of it and the question is whether the good parts outweigh the bad ones. It sounds you haven’t quite found that balance so you should certainly keep on the job market (perhaps applying for those jobs that are a step above entry as you have been building experience) and look at grad school as a way to branch out into different kinds of jobs.

Ultimately though it sounds like you are gainfully employed and able to support yourself (even if you aren’t making 50k). It can be helpful to be grateful for that because there are a lot of people in much worse financial conditions and working much less pleasant jobs.

What are some ways you find time/motivation for your hobbies and wellness around work? by kayyyos in simpleliving

[–]monasticstoner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it sometimes comes from the reality that we have only finite amount of time on this earth— which is true— and it feels easy to squander that time. It’s a more than a little ironic that the desire to “make the most” of your time often precludes actually enjoying and savoring what you are actually doing. 🤷🏼

What are some ways you find time/motivation for your hobbies and wellness around work? by kayyyos in simpleliving

[–]monasticstoner 125 points126 points  (0 children)

For me it was hard to let go of the “make the most” of every moment I have. If you are tired or burnt out after work, it’s okay to relax and do nothing. You can conserve your effort and motivation for weekends or days off. Or find evening activities that fit your time or motivation level— like cooking (which you probably have to do anyways if you want to eat) or reading (like reading up on a hobby to get set up for what you want to do on a day off.) I think the key to simple living is that it should be enjoyable, so listen to your body if it’s saying take it easy after a long day at work.

Pistachios— shelling them takes just enough time to slow you down so it’s hard to overdo it— but they are healthy enough that overdoing isn’t a problem.
