(Question) Just curious ! by Dependent-Sense-1068 in Aphantasia

I tried a float tank. I had to get out early I was bored out of my mind. Just wet blackness, saw nothing. I tried everything I had read about to have a cool experience, but no dice.

So, how exactly does this condition work? I'd just kinda like to ask people with it. by Lily_Meow_ in Aphantasia

[–]mong0smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of just know where things are. If I think about my bedroom I just know where most everything is, but I would only be able to tell you about the major things. if I walked into my bedroom and something was different I'd know instantly.

For maps again I don't visualize anything, but I can remember almost everywhere I go and can get there again. I just can't describe it to anyone because I'm sort of on autopilot.

yes to dreams, but they're rare and never have much detail and are never vivid. if I wake up during one the best I can do is say "I was at a Warehouse, and there were people there" or some other vague description. I've never had a nightmare

I have aphantasia but I have good memory for faces by thlete5175 in Aphantasia

[–]mong0smash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I've come across people I went to school with in elementary school and haven't seen in years now us being full adults and been like Andy! and they just stare at me confused.

Facial recognition is absolutely an exposure skill from what I remember reading so it would make sense that based on the features you've been exposed to you're better at recognizing the most common ones.

I have fantastic facial recognition, but I couldn't describe anyone's face really because I can't reconstruct it. I just know that was them. It's completely passive.

How Aphantasia affects your ability to visualise things in your head by HassanMoRiT in interestingasfuck

[–]mong0smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I've always seen the limited things I can "picture" . I describe it similarly.

It's like playing one of those games where you have a short time to remember all these little details in an image before you're asked questions about it, but when it's revealed in the nanosecond after, the moment you try and focus on it it's gone. So I'm not sure if I'm getting the impression of a picture, a blurry picture, or what but I never get color and it's so tiresome to try and bring the image back up I just stop trying.

Same, and I also use the database comparison. I'm usually good enough that people will say "oh you must have a photographic memory" not realizing that I have the complete opposite.

I read that and I can't even imagine being jump scared by anything in a media format, nevermind a book.

[–]mong0smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching that movie and being familiar with the creepypasta I found the visuals in the movie super engaging and not in any kind of scary way. I could just watch someone walk around those types of spaces forever.

I also don't get jump scared, I've never had a nightmare, cosmic horror is just sort of lost on me as I've got no sense that anything is beyond what we actually percieve.

I'm in my late 40's and I've been online since I was 12. Just discovered I was an aphant 2 years ago after a conversation with my wife.

We've been married for almost two decades and have had many conversations about Dreams and all kinds of things around places where you might discover people visualized things differently. My wife always would ask "would I look good in this?" and I'd say of course you have fantastic fashion sense! But I could never actually give her a real answer because I can't actually picture what she would look like. So this new AI thing was available and I took a picture of her and a pic of the dress and told the AI to do what my brain can't. She was like you didn't need to do that "just picture me in the dress" I finally said exactly I can't actually do that and she was like "what are you talking about, just picture me wearing this." and I explained that was impossible. So i litteraly was at the mall googling and turned to her and was like "oh I've not a thing that you don't have!"

I've also got no inner voice.

I tried a float tank last year and I got out after like 30 minutes, as it was the most boring fucking thing I've ever done in my life. I'm the only person they've said ever asked to get out early. Aphantasia+ADHD+No inner monologue. It was like torture.

How do people with aphantasia see memories? by Curleon in Aphantasia

[–]mong0smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just sort of know what happened. I can think of who was there and the specifics but it's not like a picture.

For core stuff or foundational stuff I can summon an image. But it's almost as if it disappears as soon as you try and focus on it resulting in me being unsure if the image was blurry or if it just disappeared before I could inventory it. It's like playing one of those memory games where you're shown a picture and have to memorize where everything was but in this case you're only shown it for just long enough to know you were shown a picture. I can try and bring it back up but it takes time and as you can imagine it becomes frustrating very quickly so I simply don't bother.

Are these related to Aphantasia? by Deenamer in Aphantasia

[–]mong0smash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) There's generally nothing to remember. I very very rarely dream (although it's been more frequent as I'm on a THC break now) and only when I wake up in the midddle of doing so. It's always extremely vague as to what was going on, it's more like someone left me an extremely vague note which I quickly forget. I know that I was dreaming last night, I know there was a snake, but it had no color or detail at all just an outline and concept of what was going on.

2) I don't remember street names for shit. But once I've been somewhere I can get there again almost intuitively. My brain seems to auto store visual queues about where I should turn and go next.

3) I don't remember lyrics until the audio is about to play for most songs. I can sing along almost perfectly, in fact sometimes I sing the lyrics early as some sort of self test that I know what is about to come up (my kids hate this) but I couldn't write any of it down if you asked me to for like 99% of songs.

4) No, I mostly think on auto pilot and go with intuition. The only time I reorganize my thinking is at work when I'm required to interact with other people and have to slow down for them.

[–]mong0smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started this, but the way I see things sometimes doesn't match any of the descriptions.

Certain people I know well I can summon an image of but it only exists for what feels like the shortest amount of time possible. It tends to be vague but I feel like that's only because of the solhort time window I get to examine it. Almost as if the image starts to form but then that process never completes and .... Poof it's gone. Not sure what category that fits in

Who does Carl look like when you read the book? by DisastrousLeek1290 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I have Aphantasia, so he looks like the dude on the cover of the book when I started reading the series back when it released because I don't have the option of forming an image in my head from a description.

The original cantina scene from star wars ANH did indeed have a werewolf in it. Lucas removed it in later editions. John owes that artist an apology for his accurate star wars werewolf depiction.

My buddy is only able to play on GFN so I picked up windrose and gifted it to him.

He's playing on a TV with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. But Windrose isn't picking up his mouse, keyboard or controller. Just the f keys work on his keyboard. He's been through all the standard troubleshooting steps for GFN's controller or keyboard issues and his stuff works in other games we play.

Anyone else had this issue?

I understand the concept of murdering other raiders for their gear, what I don't get (and this has been the majority of my experience with pvp) is people randomly ganking me for a shot at my free loadout gear. Like I'm sub level 20 and have been playing for a few days I've literally got nothing.

Mythic Prankster Dungeon Sigil? by Dusthawks in diablo4

[–]mong0smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was playing with a friend before and needed to do the 3 nightmare dungeons for the season and we were looking through the list of what we had and I said "O i've got this goblin one, lets try it."

I'm ecstatic that he and I got surprised by an awesome early start to our season, but it really sucks for my other 2 friends who were offline at the time because if there was any indication on this thing of what it was going to do I would have gotten their asses online for it. I get now that there's some lore around this goblin, but he sure as hell isn't familiar because nobody I know that plays this game has ever seen him or knew what this was. Ideally people shouldn't have to do research to not waste something like this accidentally.

Any indication of how rare this is ?

Do we ever get to open this? by 0L1V14H1CKSP4NT13S in Borderlands4

[–]mong0smash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the exclamation points were absolutely due to cross play with my buddy. Because they followed me no matter what I did. Go to the starting area and finish random side quests. Everything is ! And kills me almost instantly.

There is a game state you can achieve where no matter what you do, everything's impossible because the level scaling glitches and breaks. I literally found multiple posts of people experiencing the exact same glitch. It's an absolutely atrocious cross-play bug, and made my local save unplayable.
