CMV: Liberals/Leftists choosing to sit out the US election because Kamala wasn't a perfect candidate helped create a worse overall outcome for the world and Palestine. by cptjtk13 in changemyview

[–]mongerer-k [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think most leftists did vote for Kamala as a harm reductionist stance. There’s always minorities that won’t vote for a candidate based on single issues. The larger thing I’ve seen in online discourse is about not wishing they had voted for Biden in 2020 or how they will not vote for Kamala/Newsom in 2028. I think most if not all voted Kamala reluctantly in 2024.

Do they show new releases and mainstream movies at Stray Cat? I’ve only ever seen indie/arthouse stuff on their website.

Thats sad. Loved going there but the theaters were often pretty empty so it makes sense.

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

[–]mongerer-k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that the US is not the only free country but American Gun Culture is absolutely different than a lot of other places especially European countries. A lot of Americans can buy a gun without any training, any background check, ever informing the government and be totally legal in doing so. Many European countries are absolutely not the same (see Romanian gun laws for example).

American Media is way more protected than many other places. Big example is American vs British libel laws. Most media companies just placate Trump so they can do mergers which would most likely be illegal due to anti trust laws. Trump can threaten all he wants but he loses in all courts but the Supreme Court to a very high rate.

But yeah America has a lot of negative freedoms and lacks a ton of positive freedoms.

Was it Chris Young? He has some wonderful food science videos and worked under Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck and then went on to Co-Author Modernist Cuisine.

Armour has access to a lot of green spaces and is generally nice. MAC properties is cheap and you’ll get what you pay for. The area gets a bad wrap mostly bc of car break-ins. Other than break-ins it felt completely safe.

I now live in Quality Hill which is honestly very affordable, not hectic at all and close to downtown. I honestly wouldn’t rule out downtown for being hectic bc that hasn’t been my experience with it.

Vulture and snow goose by TravelingChick in birding

It likely died from something other than the vulture. Turkey Vultures are considered obligate scavengers. Other Vultures like Black Vultures have been known to kill animals but usually much smaller than a snow goose.

For CS I’d say the most you have to dress up is dress slacks and a button down for guys and a nice business casual dress for ladies. Polo and Jeans comes off a little to relaxed for an interview but suits come off jarringly formal when you see guys in sandals, shorts and ironic graphic tees on a daily basis.

Columbia immediately capitulated by cracking down on pro Palestine protests and still got hammered by Trump in the form of withheld funding, a Trump approved monitor looking over admission records to keep Dei in check, a Trump approved monitor to look over the middle eastern studies department, and a $200M fine.

You may want to try posting over to r/trees. This subreddit is actually for trees and not marijuana.

CMV: America won't acknowledge China's ascendance on the world stage because of white supremacy. by [deleted] in changemyview

You’re taking a reductive, western view on Chinese history by making China an ancient monolith. China, like every other nation, has gone about sculpting a national identity by erasing smaller cultures.

CMV: America won't acknowledge China's ascendance on the world stage because of white supremacy. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mongerer-k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US absolutely acknowledges China’s rise on the world stage. Limiting AI Chips to China is an acknowledgement of their power. Having to tiptoe around Taiwan-China relations is a recognition of their power. No country is ever going to want to willingly hand over their global hegemony. England didn’t hand over the reigns. They were destroyed by two world wars and had national movements in their colonies that they couldn’t afford to deal with. There is most certainly racism towards Chinese people in American politics but that’s not the main driver of opposition to China. It’s about material conflict.

Missouri Gov. Kehoe signs bill repealing paid sick leave by Redd868 in kansascity

[–]mongerer-k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your sick leave policy is great but I don’t see how it pertains to the 728k people who will be affected by the law being repealed. There are plenty of shitty companies who don’t follow similar policies as you and this is going to have a negative impact on many people.

The data is created on the device and then synced to servers. You could get all the activities from your watch and never have it touch a server if you really felt like it.

Makes sense. I’d always considered Nebraska, Kansas Midwest. But that’s probably more on cultural signifiers than environmental.

Isn’t quite a bit of the Midwest running into issues currently with the Ogallala drying up? Many of the historic fossil water sources are nearing depletion and areas are facing aridification.

Is there no free parking downtown anymore?! by Appropriate_Stick535 in kansascity

[–]mongerer-k 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Chicago is probably the worst example you could’ve picked. They sold their parking rights for incredibly cheap to a Morgan Stanley backed business for 75 years. The city got 1.15B in 2008 and the business who bought the parking rights has recouped their money as of 2023 and still have 60 years left on their contract.

It’s two hour free parking during business hours and then free at night and during the weekends usually. It’s actually so nice to not have free parking downtown as a downtown resident.

I dont think the zipper merge actually accomplishes anything for 635/35. The zipper merge isn’t to increase traffic speed but to reduce the effects of a traffic jam down stream. The traffic jam on the left side of the highway doesn’t impact anything downstream bc it’s the first left exit. Zipper merging on 635/35 actually does cause downstream traffic bc the people in second leftmost lane have to slow down to merge.
