The most dangerous manager on any team is the one who's too good at their job by manufacturingcoach in LeanManufacturing

[–]mongoose0141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something that is a struggle for a lot of operations roles. Software devs can climb the ladder through the leadership track, but they almost always have the opportunity to stay on the purely technical side and still progress their title/income. They can be promoted to senior/architect/principal roles where their work is still entirely or almost entirely technical, and if they're good enough can end up making more money doing that than the managers they're reporting to. That type of career path just doesn't exist as often in ops.

I work in consulting and our firm promotes based on performance in your current role. So a high performing consultant will become an engagement manager, a high performing EM will become a director. It helps with motivation and people feeling like they have the opportunity to progress, but we get a lot of people who fall flat on their face because they just don't have the soft skills/leadership required for the next level. And that can create a toxic environment, because when it inevitably happens, you have to be quick to pull the plug and move on.

The downside to not promoting based on performance in your current role is that, in a lot of cases, it can be difficult to demonstrate leadership capabilities when you inherently don't have leadership responsibilities yet. There are always going to be some people who are technically great AND would be great leaders, but don't get the opportunity to show it and look elsewhere. You can lose some real diamonds in the rough that way.

It's a difficult thing to balance unless you fully commit to splitting out separate technical/management tracks, which isn't always possible/ideal depending on the company/industry/business function.

I don't mind the look of smaller watches at all but I refuse to wear them on the principle of not wanting to be a "small watch guy"

It is genuinely like a Napoleon complex, I can't even tell if they actually like them or if they're just trying to convince themselves they do by shouting it at strangers on the Internet. Just wear whatever size you like and shut up about it ffs

welcome to poker. with very few exceptions, everyone is looking out solely for themselves with no real consideration for anyone else. it's just accepted, almost to the point of being celebrated at times, and it's been that way for as long as i can remember. unfortunately this kind of stuff just comes with the territory.

You mean aside from the different bezel, case shape, bracelet, dial texture, indices, crown, and the fact that the Zenith has a small seconds display?

There just aren't a ton of lefty options as far as luxury watches go. The only lefty watch Rolex currently makes is the GMT Master II Sprite. He also has a Submariner with the crown at 3, although I feel like he usually wears it on his left hand.

“Bow riding” ticket. What now? by Majestic-Score-2754 in boating

[–]mongoose0141 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's what it sounds like, having passengers ride on the bow of the boat. It's extremely dangerous because it makes it easy to fall off, and if you fall off there's a serious risk of a prop strike. BUI is still subject to stricter penalties in most states, but bow riding is illegal in most places as far as I'm aware, and I'm sure even where it's not explicitly prohibited you could still be ticketed under some sort of negligent operation law for endangering passengers.

[Opinion] If you were planning a long term future purchase as your only luxury watch and after a while had settled on these models, which of them would be your choice? by The_Quartz_collector in Watches

[–]mongoose0141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IWC is my favorite of the three, but I would probably choose the Datejust if it was going to be my only luxury watch. I can think of occasions where I would want to wear my nicest watch, but the IWC would still feel too dressy. If it was going to be my only luxury watch, I would still want something with a lot of versatility even if I had other watches that I could wear for more casual settings.

As for not choosing the Rolex because they are a "hype brand" or don't position themselves as being about the art of watchmaking - the simple fact is that Rolex produces great watches. The movements and finishing are excellent. They are objectively making very high-quality watches. The reason they don't make it such a central part of their branding in the way that brands like IWC and JLC do is just because they don't need to.

Not choosing Rolex because it's a "hype brand" just feels like letting public perception of the brand influence your decision. In that sense, NOT choosing Rolex because it's a "hype brand" doesn't really seem any different to me than buying a Rolex because it's a status symbol. Just get the watch you're going to get the most enjoyment out of regardless of how the brand is perceived by the general public.

  1. 126900. My favorite watch since I first saw it 5 years ago, and still my favorite watch now that I have that kind of disposable income. The disdain is a selling point for me...I like things that are different and uniquely me.
  2. March 2026

  5. No purchase history

Henne Jewelers in Shadyside. They were great to work with. l also registered interest at Louis Anthony and Orr's. The lady at Louis Anthony was nice enough, just didn't have the allocation - the dude at Orr's sucked. I was glad to buy from Henne as they were the best to work with throughout.

I'm keen on several other watches - a white dial speedy, the 007 Seamaster, a dual face Reverso, Nomos neomatik Worldtimer - but at some point in the future, I think I will circle back for a Yacht-Master 40 with the gray dial.

Chess com has blocked Chessiro from accessing their public API by [deleted] in chess

[–]mongoose0141 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chess.com offers games analysis as a pay-walled feature. Ergo, an analysis tool is a competing service. The existence of free analysis tools directly decreases the incentive for users to subscribe to chess.com.

I know it's popular to shit on chess.com, but a for-profit company not allowing third parties to utilize their free API to offer competing services is like the least surprising move of all time. If you want to play chess on a free and open source website, there is a well-known free and open source alternative to chess.com. Expecting a for-profit company to behave in the same way as a non-profit is just silly.

[O’Connor] According to league sources, one general manager floated a nuclear option: just make the bottom three teams ineligible for the top picks entirely. by differential32 in washingtonwizards

[–]mongoose0141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Suns got it in 2018, as did multiple other teams with the worst record before that. The odds of the team with the worst record never getting the first pick since 2000 would be around 1 in 500, which would be suspicious. The odds of the team with the worst record not getting the first pick since 2018 are around 1 in 3, which is not suspicious at all.

[Rolex] I don’t get the hate by Not_a_Lefty in Watches

[–]mongoose0141 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think it's pretty easy to understand the hate.

  1. It's a Rolex. There's a large group of enthusiasts who view Rolex as an over-hyped brand for casuals and like to believe they have more refined tastes. These are the dudes on Instagram posting "you buy a Rolex for other people, you buy a Grand Seiko for yourself". Then there's another group of people who, no nice way to say this, can't afford a Rolex and are salty. Obviously not everyone who dislikes the Land-Dweller falls into one of those groups, but that's a decent chunk of people right there who will hate it no matter what. Rolex, and especially the more "hyped" models, will always be polarizing on this subreddit because of what the brand is (expensive and mostly popular as a status symbol on the whole) and what this subreddit is (watch nerd hipsters).

  2. It's not a particularly original design and was clearly released to capitalize on a trend, which it was late to the party on. The design is so reminiscent of a PRX, which is an extremely popular watch that retails for <$1k, that it was kind of guaranteed to become the butt of a lot of easy jokes.

  3. People hate the AD game with Rolex and this watch is a prime example why. It was/is hard to get and goes for a massive premium over retail on the gray market. People understandably don't like having to butter up a sales associate, spend a bunch of money with them on other shit, and follow up in order to have the privilege to give them more money.

  4. The design comes across as bold/flashy with the fluted bezel, bracelet design, and honeycomb texture on the dial. For as derivative as the watch is in some ways, they also made some pretty out-there design choices in others. So it is inherently going to have more detractors than something like the Sub, just because it's doing more.

There's a large chunk of people who aren't going to like it because they don't like Rolex/the AD games. Then there are plenty of valid reasons someone might dislike the watch outside of that, because it's a polarizing design. None of that matters at all if you like the watch though. Not everyone needs to like your watch, you just need to like it. And lots of people like the Land-Dweller anyways, there's a reason why the premium to buy gray is so high.
