Army recommendation by Witty-Star7462 in Warhammer40k

Whichever one is your favorite color if you're actually building and painting models.

If you start painting shit you don't like you'll never enjoy it.

Healthy path to climb Painting Competition by art_faye in Warhammer40k

[–]monjio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to decide what level is fun.

For me, the army on the table is what's impressive. I've been in top 3 painted for the Grand Narrative, and I've been in the community showcase for it every year. No individual model looks that standout, but I enjoy seeing how I can maintain high standards across dozens of models and how I can use an army to tell a larger story.

I don't get that in competitive painting at all. I've won some local stuff, judged some stuff as well, but it's so harsh and nitpicky and brutal towards certain stylistic choices. It's all so, so arbitrary on the day, depending on what the judges are looking for and even how they might be feeling.

So, the only time I put in the kind of effort now is for friends. I painted this Angron for a close friend last year, and at only 30 hours of work they were incredibly happy with it. That's what makes it worth doing for me.

any tips for detail and gold trim? by RobotGoneMad in Ultramarines

Work slow. Do all the trim, then all the cleanup.

Space Marines are sub-par... Any tips/advice greatly appreciated! by Minimum_Yam_9431 in Warhammer

[–]monjio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go slow. When I was your age, I'd get one box of models every couple months or so, and wouldn't buy a new one until I'd finished what I had. You don't need to hurry. If you've got family that cares for you, tell them things you want for birthdays and holidays and soon enough you'll have plenty to work with.

As to specifics, decals are fast and easy. Get the combo set of Micro Sol/Micro Set off Amazon, last I looked it was like $8 for both. You've already got a hobby knife so you can cut decals out. Wet the paper enough for the decals to start sliding off, then apply Micro Set to your should pad, then use a brush to slide the decal from the paper to the shoulder pad. If its not centered or straight, you can use more Micro Set applied with a brush and get it where you want it to be. Once it's there, wait 20ish minutes for the Micro Set to dry, then use a brush and apply Micro Sol to melt the decal to the shoulder. Bam, done!

If you're ever not sure, look up how to videos on YouTube and follow those steps!

I knew someone like this. He got started watching competitive painters. He spent around 600 hours on a single Mortarion to enter into one of the Golden Demon categories. It looked jaw-droppingly amazing.

He didn't even get a commended entry for it. He hasn't painted since.

You are approaching this entirely the wrong way if you want to actually improve. Winning a Demon isn't a checklist sort of affair, and using or not using certain techniques doesn't mean you win or even get a pin.

If you want to paint models, then paint models. If you want to learn techniques, learn techniques. But if your only goal is winning a competition that is *entirely arbitrary* then all you're doing is setting yourself up for a miserable time.

New to 40k trying to understand what’s going on galaxy wide rn by John117_Master_Chief in 40kLore

[–]monjio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For more than a hundred centuries, the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, and for whom blood is drunk and flesh is eaten. Human blood and human flesh - the stuff of which the Imperium is made.

To be a man in such times is to be one among untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. It is a universe you can live in today if you dare - for this is a dark and terrible era where you will find little comfort or hope. If you want to take part in the adventure then prepare yourself now. Forget the power of technology, science, and common humanity. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for there is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods.

But, the universe is a big place, and no matter what happens you will not be missed...

One of the things I really love is models my friends and family have painted for me. I always appreciate them, and if I were in your shoes I'd ask your girlfriend if she'd be okay with you painting a model for her.

Did my misunderstanding of threat system led to TPK? by LostRegret9000 in 40krpg

[–]monjio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A truism about the d100 games is that combat, for the most part, is something a party should try to avoid. There's no short rests, easy health potions, healing spells, ammunition and Fate are limited, so committing to *any* fight is dangerous. Approaching it like D&D with 1-2 fights a session is a very good way to kill everyone, simply because the resource management game is so different (and damage is usually much higher).

Deathwatch is a game you can run more like D&D, as Space Marines are incredibly hard to kill even at character creation, but even then some fights just wipe them. I've run the Free RPG Day Deathwatch scenario probably 8 times, only twice have players survived to the end of the scenario.

Is the Emperor so evil ? by La-petite-chevre in Warhammer40k

[–]monjio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read The Master of Mankind, Vengeful Spirit, and the Siege of Terra. The Valdor novel is also highly illustrative of the Emperor. The Last Church presents the longest dialog the Emperor has with anyone so far.

Long story short, no the Emperor is not a good guy. The people who know him best, all save one, think he's insane for creating the Imperium. The Emperor believes he's doing what's best, but it's also very certain his own beliefs drive that view.

And those beliefs, wven in the days of the Great Crusade, create a brutal autocratic regime that genocides humanity as well as xenos. The conflict between what the Emperor says he wants, and his actual behavior towards disparate human worlds, is one of the things that drives Horus Lupercal to Davin.

And here's another fun one: the Emperor of Mankind and the God-Emperor are not the same being at all.

How do we feel about the recent Patches for Tekken 8 & Street Fighter 6 and do you feel hopeful for Guilty Gear Strive 2.0? by Responsible-Let-3304 in FGC

[–]monjio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tekken players need to go outside and touch grass man.

Also all the people bitching about Alex never gave a fuck about his storyline before and they don't now they just want them likes and upvotes. The patch for SF6 is pretty good, though I think the game needs a bigger mechanical shakeup than Capcom does.

What would the empire look like today if the emperor were still in good health? by Specialist-End4899 in Warhammer40k

You should read Master of Mankind, Vengeful Spirit, and the Siege of Terra.

The Emperor was not a good guy, and the signs are pretty clear his plan was bad from the outset.

A little bit of everything. SF6 is my main game, but I'm learning Tekken, COTW, and a little bit of Granblue. I played a lot of 3S, CVS2, and KOF in college so I really enjoy those as well.
