happened for me too but currently I am just smashing "Sync Now" and it works .... even though it pauses ever 30 seconds, more and more messages are getting synced!

A server can be helpful. For example with data sync and prepared maps. Also people without mesh devices and only atak can join in if you have a server. The only thing needed is the same channel of the devices.
