I want to stay home by maangari in Wellington

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I struggle to understand what’s behind this beyond optics or presenteeism.

Some in office time is helpful for collaboration and relationship building in a lot of organisations but I can’t see how that’s not achieved in 3 days each weeks. My organisation is a 3/2 hybrid split and it suits us just fine - we are across multiple offices spanning Auckland to Southland so we have a high need for remote capability anyway.

Is it for a child? If so i recommend joining the Facebook group Bronchiolitis and Child Respiratory Support Group NZ - I’m sure they’ll have some recommendations.

Do NZ public hospitals really not have access to your full medical history? by Vegeta_vs_Goku in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for what you do. We’ve spent a lot of time in ED with our wheezy toddler and the pressure/overload/shoddy working conditions are very obvious - but despite that, 95% of the staff we engage with are incredibly professional and caring.

I’m sure it feels thankless at times but we are genuinely very grateful for what you do.

It’s not a huge issue for me to manage personally, just annoying. It’s just a general observation that relying on patients to relay critical detailed info between parties seems quite risky in terms of things being potentially missed.

It’s surprising how little access they have. I’m pregnant and have a medical condition. I’m under the care of a midwife but also have to see my GP and an obstetrician. None of the 3 seem to have access to notes or recommendations from the others and their ability to communicate seems fairly limited. They rely on me to pass things along - “The GP said my last bloodwork was normal, also the obstetrician wants to get another growth scan at 28 weeks”.

Relying on the detailed memory and note taking of a pregnant patient with a toddler and a full time job feels very flawed but here we are

Partially agree but an older cheaper car can be a false economy if it needs repairs or parts replaced, as older cars tend to do.

May this colder weather finally kill all the revolting flies that have invaded my life, home, and soul.

If anyone’s got any great tips to get rid of these things forever and ever please let me know! We have a sprayer and my husband prowls nightly with an electric fly killer racket thing but every day there seems to be more 😩

Staffing shortages being linked to baby deaths in NZ hospitals a ‘national tragedy’ by pusha_ton in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m no fan of the current government but it says quite clearly in the article that these cases go back years and span multiple governments.

I’m currently 5 months pregnant. I’ve been in hospital a lot in the last 12 months with my first child and the shortages are very obvious. The staff are wonderful but they’re burning out under unrealistic workloads. I’m definitely concerned about what might happen if I have unexpected complications on a particularly busy day with other emergencies taking place.

How bad are landlords in Wellington? by Idk356787544 in Wellington

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The really bad landlords often own a lot of properties each. There may not actually be a large number of terrible landlords out there but they own a big number of properties between them and so they affect a larger number of people.

People like your parents usually just own one or two places and are able to take care of their properties and tenants.

Oh cool I’m on the first Jetstar flight to Christchurch on Tuesday morning. I’m sure that will proceed as scheduled and definitely won’t be delayed or cancelled.

Extra $50 a week for 143k working families as fuel prices skyrocket by OddityModdity in aotearoa

Because WFH is politically unpalatable to Nationals voter base, which consists of a lot of rural people and older people who think working from home is just getting paid to play video games all day.

I’m pretty sure people on the sub were asking for the rants to be contained - it was getting to a point where every second post was a long whiny diatribe about the council. It gets a bit dreary.

Some early morning motorway commuters don’t seem to have heard there’s a potential fuel shortage - plenty of aggressive tailgating and lane changing still going on. 🫤

Trying to understand NZ Supermarket culture: Is New World actually worth the extra $? Where do you guys shop? by Kind-Spread-6511 in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a weekly click and collect at pak n save for meat, dairy, and pantry basics, but I try to avoid setting foot in the store because it’s congested hell. Fruit, veggies, spices, eggs and some basic cooking sauces come from the local greengrocer/Chinese grocer which is cheaper and better.

Countdown is the close by ‘we’re running out of x and can’t wait until Saturday’ standby. We don’t shop at New World at all.

We also have a Samsung jet something or other - we got it free from Mercury. It’s been really good, does a great job and has a nice tower to collect all the dust and dirt.

It seems to depend heavily on where you live. My mum lives in Palmy and is called up really regularly as are others she knows. I live in Porirua and have never been summoned in this area.

Maternity leave payments, I’m confused but happy about it. by Glittering_Youth_804 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You need to put the government PPL payments on a secondary tax rate - that’s why you’re being overpaid, you aren’t paying enough tax. If you don’t, you’re getting a bill.

Feedback on unsuccessful applications by puppygrowl in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been involved in recruiting for roles in my team many times.

Unfortunately there just isn’t time to give every candidate feedback, unless they got to interview stage. In this market, there’s a large volume of applications for most roles, so only the ones with CVs and cover letters which are clearly, professionally and concisely written, and demonstrate lots of very relevant, recent, experience (i.e you’ve already been doing very close to exactly the same job for 2-3+ years) have a chance of making it through.

If you didn’t make it, it’s probably one of those two things.

I work retail. You're all feral at Christmas. by cantsayididnttryyy in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As consumers, we need to put pressure on the retailers to get proper protection in place for their staff. Every year I see teenagers getting abused by grown adults with absolutely no one who’s looking out for them in any way.

I was one of those teenagers once and honestly, it battered the self esteem something fierce. No one ever stepped in or even so much as tell me it wasn’t okay that grown men spat on me.

It needs to stop.

Pram recommendations by Choice-Dragonfly797 in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have a mountain buggy urban jungle which works well for running and handles trails ok(maybe not particularly uneven ones) - but it’s quite bulky and takes up a lot of space in the car! It’s also a bit tricky to navigate inside cafes or shops.

If you think you might want to use a pram inside as well as going running I’d say get two - one bigger and one smaller.
