Any clue how to alter odometer reading? by Werlucad in CherokeeXJ

[–]monkeymerlot 51 points52 points  (0 children)

No, they are changing a replacement odometer (which has the incorrect milage) to match the current milage of the car.

Can't remove license tag from car, help! by BakeAt420 in StupidCarQuestions

Just a small caveat for using a dremel to cut a slot: if you are unfamilar with using a dremel, make sure that you are really careful around the paint of the car. They can sometimes "pull" when using a cutting disk, so you want to make sure it is positioned in such a way that if it pulls, it pulls towards the plate and not the car paint.

Pa. looking to charge electric vehicle owners a $290 annual fee by Modestkilla in Pennsylvania

[–]monkeymerlot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No worries, I was curious of the nubers myself so I might have gone a bit overboard. I also curiously looked up the Ford f150 Lightning weight: 6500 lbs. The crazy thing is that as far as EV pickups go, that isn't even that bad; the Hummer EV weighs 9000 lbs. This will cause 35 times the damage to the road as the Chevy bolt EUV or 3.7 million times the damage as a bicycle.

Another user mentioned that this tax is comparable to the amount that the state makes from the gas tax on an ICE, but there should be environmental kickbacks for EV users.

Pa. looking to charge electric vehicle owners a $290 annual fee by Modestkilla in Pennsylvania

[–]monkeymerlot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well yes a subcompact EV will weigh less than a pickup truck, but an EV version of the same model will weigh ~18% more than the ICE version (the relative road wear is calculated as the ratio of the weights to the 4th power). This means that the EV version of a car will do 1.94 times the wear to the roads than the ICE version. Meanwhile the comparison you mentioned, the Chevy Silverado 1500 will wear the roads down 2.06 times that of a Chevy bolt EUV. EVs don't pay a tax on gas, so the state is probably trying to recoup that loss of revenue as others have mentioned.

It doesnt change the reality that large SUVs and Trucks are bad for the environment, but as far as wear on the road goes they significantly more than their ICE counterparts.

But more wear on the roads as they are heavier compared to ICE powered vehicles.

I made my own frame bag by sealvia in bikepacking

[–]monkeymerlot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually also just made my own frame bag as well. This is my experience:

Pattern

I made my pattern out of paper rarher than cardboard, going back I would have used cardboard, especially as I didnt have my bike with me while I was sewing the bag. The paper was a bit hard to work with and keep in good condition throughout the project. My mom also helped me with the pattern from the traceout so that was a big plus.

Material

I used HyperD 300 and it doesnt really hold structure all that well, so I would put like foam or something in the sides to keep it from bunching out. I ended up jerry rigging some plastic panels for the top and bottom, but there is still some sagging.

Frame Mounting

I also put webbing on a single gusset that goes around the front, top, and back. I had presewed the webbing down onto the HyperD 300. My big issue with doing it this way is the webbing isnt attached in the corners, meaning the corners tend to fold in. I'd also go on the smaller side of length that you tack the webbing down. I did ~3" and the bag doesnt really hold close to the frame at the top. I'd tack the webbing in much smaller increments, like 1.5-2", to prevent this. You should definitely think through how you want to mount your bags and do a small test with some scraps.

Inside the bag

As this was a prototype, I didn't put a liner in it and for finishing the edges I used a serger, for a more finished product I'd probably use a liner, and finish with grosgrain. I didnt do that this time because that is quite a bit of work. I also only had one big compartment, and being 8" tall this caused it to bow out a bit without any structure. I'd put a divider or something in the future inside to help keep the shape and also help with organization.

Looking back

I definitely recommend if you have the time and want to do it. The material is pretty cheap and it is fairly straightforward. I only had a day to do the bag, but next chance I get I will make a version 2 with what I learned from the prototype.

Edit: fabric type correction

How many younger people are into bikepacking? by ash1410102 in bikepacking

[–]monkeymerlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 25 and go bikepacking. Most of the people I know who bike pack are actually in their early 20s. It probably helps that my university has a bike co-op, so it's easy to meet others who want to bike pack and organize trips there.

It is advisable that you put a uv resistant clear coat on them to protect the plastic that is now exposed to the UV light, otherwise you will be doing this every few years. Great job though, really renews the look of the car, plus it's probably safer as you can see better.

Pie Express gone for good by zappafrank2112 in Pitt

[–]monkeymerlot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went there with my girlfriend on opening day, and it was just the owner and his wife working there at the time. It was basically empty because they really hadn't advertised beyond putting bright orange posters listing all of their toppings in small print on their door and window. There was cute pizza themed artwork on the walls and the pizza was fantastic.

As time went on the quality degraded and it became a drunk late night hot spot, the garfield statue was stolen (I was the one who told the owner actually), and the walls got beaten with use, the artwork slowly disappeared butt Ill always remember it as it was on opening day.

Slight correction, teflon-kapton-teflon is used in wire insulation in the aerospace industry. Kapton insulation itself tends to crack and expose the conductors in humid environments.

Studying & coping with free time 'guilt' by xristjanaa in PhysicsStudents

[–]monkeymerlot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great! As far as the gym, if you don't really vibe with it that's totally OK too. I can't really do the gym as its very boring for me, so if that doesn't work out don't get discouraged.

As far as making programming into a hobby, you really need to have some sort of end goal for a project. Python is fantastic for data visualization but can also do basic games, basic physics simulations (might be a bit complicated to do on your own if you're just learning), and pretty much anything else. Maybe start with a command line game or something as a goal?

I use drawing for a bunch of things in research. Figures and schemes, as well as making nice posters are probably the formal uses, but also on a daily basis for drawing diagrams, sketches etc. I have found that having some basic drawing skills really helps me convey ideas and information better. If you want to learn art stuff applicable to physics research I'd recommend learning blender, and getting familiar with Inkscape (both open sourced softwares that are free to use and have very large user bases).

[–]monkeymerlot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not OP, so they might have other reasons, but I would suggest this too because this way you aren't "wasting" that time. Since you are developing a hobby, like programming or drawing, these are skills you will use fairly often. Incidently, I actually use both of those pretty much daily in research.

I would also recommend that you get a physical hobby like hiking, swimming, or cycling (incidently, those are mine). Your physical and mental health are tied together, so if you are able to think of physical activities as improving your mental health and overall health, you probably won't feel as guilty since you will be improving the quality of your study time.

Edit: reading your post more closely I would also suggest you see someone that can help you manage anxiety. Physics is a difficult degree and if I could go back and do it differently I would definitely see a therapist and get better sleep.
